A very careful and skillfull politician is Senator Fairbanks of Indiana, aud it ia amone the probabilities that he will round out a successful career by becom ing tha next President of the United States. The people lect, bt ,he P0'' ticlans, within certain limitations, nom inate. In making the nomination. however, thev listen to public sentiment, as voiced hv tne press, and endeavor to lt the candidate whom they believe ni mnr enoairh to defeat the onncsition. Ttiere is nothing effective that can be said against Senator Fair hanks, and it is rrobable that the lime light in which he will soon stand will be beoeficial instead of injurious to his nrosuects. He to a careful, conm native ond fair num. representing the best type of American citizenship, equi-distat.t from the demagogue and the corporation tnnt. and sttndiuz for law enforcement as the great remedy for existing evils. w .nta to be President, and is un doubtedly doing his best to sfcore the position, yet be has no hesitation in g- ing on record on all public questions, and has been, and is a strong supporter of the politics of President Roosevelt. His methods are those of the successful tactician, whether applied to war. busi ness or politics. Like Lincoln, while thoroughly devoted to great principles, he understands the neccesity of careful attention to details, and that no great success is achieved without carjfnl and persistent endeavor. In fact, his life is an example and an inspiration to Ameri can youth. He was a farm boy and, as mauy others have done, worked bis way through college, cooking his meal and living on a pittance. There is nothing sensational in his career, nothing but a gradual building up, based upon the principles that are sore to win success for everyone who puts them in force. He is a sound thinker, and when many of his partr were carried away by the delusion of cheap money Senator Fairbanks stood for the gold standard and the maintenance of public and private credit. His position as to the corporations was tersely ex pressed in answer to an inquiry. They must know who is the boss." It is very probable that Senator Fairbanks will win the nomination. All things con sidered he is probably the strongest man the Republican party could nominate. 'His record will bear inspection, and i hat is a great deal to say for a man who has been in public office for many years. THE NEW ORDER. COUNTY TIMBER CRUISER. Someone has suggested the wisdom of J Cowlilx connty einployiug a limner; cruiser to cruise all the timber lands In the county in order to more accurately fix the value ot the lands for taxation. It would no doubt be a paying PP0 silition for the county, as it is an easy matter to make a mistake of "a few thousand dollars in fixing the Value of a quarter section of timher lsnd, if the land has not been cruised. The assess or hsa not the lime to cruise timber in order to find the true value of the land, and can therefore only guess at the valuation to place upon it. It is only right and tail that the land that cruises the most timber should pay the heaviest i : 1 - taxes, The valuation oi wmuer muu, was increased a good deal by Mr. Down-1 ing when he was assessor, but the valu-1 ation on the large tract of timber in j the eastern part of the county must j necessarily be estimated In a sort of j l.lmtale manner nuless the timber is cruised. No doubt money could b3 made for the county by having a cruiser go over the timber lands of the county every five or ten years and fix valuations for the guidance of the asees-or and the board ot equalisation. The initiative is here to stay. It should not be lightly invoked, but it will be used as a weapon of defer ee whenever the tepresentatives elected by the people fail or neglect to dotbelr duty. By iU use re direct primary was enacted and the Legisla ture will do well not to tamptr with that measure. It is the 'eatu blow to all the old methods of the bosses, and thev object to losing their power. There will be bosses (or leaders) in the future, but not as there have been the past. The methods employed will be entirely different. The old ward heelers can no longer be relied upon to deliver the goods, therefore they will be of less value to the boss. Public opinion most be courted through the medium of the prevs, and the political aspirant mn't be able to convince the people that his noininaiion will be bent-ficial to their interests. They will doubtless make many mi'lakes, but they will have the power to rectify them much quicker than tnler the old tystt-m. Mere subservience to a dominant faction will not uie;n political succsi. It is the realization of this fact that is milk ing the heelers and ward workers squirm. At Jon. IjS) Jjmsa t00, Slautar. The rrewnt congress ha added to it record of important legislation br pass-, ing an act lo pension any soldier over 62 years of age who served ninety day in the Mexican war, in the United Bute arm. This la will apply at once to all Mexican soldiers, and nearly all the surviving TJni-jn soldiers, for a man of 20 when the ci.-il war closed is now 62. Age alone in these cases gives a claim to a pension of $12 a month at 62 yars of age, 15 a month at 70 yars. and $20 a month at 75 years and over. Pensioners now receiving "ess than this allowance can get it increased on appli cation. Those who are receiving more are not affected by the new law. Clai ros for special disabilities may be prose cuted as before. This act sweeps sway an immense amount of red tape and uelay, otten running into years, to which applicants for pensions nave been subjected, ll can be taken for granted that a veteran past the sge of 62 is unfit for manual labor, and many of the medical exami nations carried on have long been super fluous. Pensioners are dying at the rale of more than 40,000 a year, and the mor tality In their ranks is increasing. Only a f'w thousand survivors remain of the Mexican war, which closed fifty-nine years ago. It is doubtful it the pension oavments next year exceed those 1906, of H0TICE ro cieoTons.
