OREGON 'MIST Entered at the Tostoftice at St. Helens, Oregon, as second-class mail matter. ISSITKD KVKRY lrRHAV BV E. It. FLAGG, Editor and FRorRiKTOR. One copy, one year, in advance. . . .$1 00 Six months SO Legal notices 23 cents per line. FRIDAY, IVc. 21. GOOD WOliK. The action of the people of road dis trict No. 3, in voting a special levy of li milts, and designating the manner in which the money shall be expended was wise and timely. It indirates that the people of St. Helens and Houlton, and the surrounding territory of this district realize that no good can be accomplished without expense and effort, and that they are determined the roads of this district shall be put in first-class condi tion at as early a date as possible. There should bo a road from St. Helens to Portland that would tempt automobiles to make this place an adjective point for their pleasure trips. It possesses inducements that a trip up the valley cannot offer, and we have a hotel here that is not equaled in any other com munity of this size in the State. We be lieve it would pay well to advertise these facts next spring in Portland's daily papers, and that the result would be to draw attention to the fact that there is no section of Oregon that offers so many advantages to those who desire beauti ful country homes within easy reach of the metropolis. With a modern electric road St. Helens is within a half hour's travel of Portland, and it is certain, with the rapid growth of the city, that audi a road will be constructed within a very few years. The construction of first class county roads will do much to ward hastening the advent of the electric road, and we hope the twootherdistricts between St. Helens and the Multnomah line will join with us in pushing the good work along. At St. Johns, St. Helens, Rainier, Ka- laine, Linnton, Stella, Knappton and Astoria '- are seagoing vessels loading lumber cargoes, while at most of the ports mentioned a rail lumber trade is also handled. The lumber industry iron) the time the logger fells the tree until the finished product is stowed aboard the vessel, is continually disburs ing money for labor, and it is on this money that the prosperity of a great many new towns and cities in the Fa ci6c Northwest is largely dependent, The capacity of the lumber fleet loading on the Columbia and Willamette Kivers is eeldom less than 20,000.000 feet, and it not infrequently reaches 30,CKJO,000 feet. Even in its present proportions, it is far short of the maximum which will be reached many years hence. Oregonian. Postage stamps of the issue of 1107 at 6,000 presidential postoffices, will bear on their face the name of the state and the city in which the postoffice is sit uated. The chief reason for this is said to be the belief that it w ill help, to do away with postoffice robberies and mate it nine1- easier to trace criminals. The postoffice rubbery at Chicago a ftw years ago is a good example of the ease with which stolen postage stamps can be dis posed of, for no trace of the perpetrators was ever discovered, although nearly f 100,000 w orth of stamps w ere stolen and these mostly in small denominations. Another reason for the change is to en able the postoffice department to deter mine the amount of business done by different postoffices and prevent padding through stamps sold by some offices to residents w ho do business in cities. 100 iOOO 3000 100 1 100 .. - 150 Following are the real estate transfers in this county for the two weeks ending Dec. 15, 1006: A Anderson to the O K tagging Co, booming right A and It Arata to James Peter son, sw qr sec ., and nw qr sec 34. ti. 3 John Hack us to Kainier Electric Power Co, right-of-way J and A Bryden to Henry Steu nick, hf in t in hf of nw qr sec SI, 5, 4 E A and F M Cusbman to Colum bia Timber Co, tie qr sec 32, 6, 2 F A ami C N Cusbiugto Columbia Timber Co, ew qr sec 32, 6, 2 CJandM L lnppert to James Peterson, se qr see 27, 0, 3. . . The cause assigned for his resignation was a disagreement with the presiding elder in regard to the church exteusion work in connection with the building of the new church at Rainier, and lifting tbe debt of the churches at St. Helens and Houl ton. Rev. Kemp's resignation was not called for and was strongly opposed by the members of the church. He has been the storm center of a bitter fight and has made strong friends and bitter enemies; but it must be admitted by all that he is a man of great energy and considerable ability, and we trust that iu his new field these qualities will bring him prosperity. With his family he will soon move to Portland, where he is at the head of the Kemp Printing Co. Mr. BeHord, manager of the Western Cooperage Company's factory at Houl ton, was a visitor to Rainier on Friday last. Mr. B. W. Barnes, of Little, Wash., paid friends in Rainier a visit Tuesday. Mr. Barnes is at present in the employ of the Wisconsin Lumber Co. He was formerly bookkeeper for the Rainier Mill & Lumber Couipauy here. The new Willard Case sawmill will be gin active operations January 1. They are bus- installing new machinery and laying railroad track up the canyon. Capt. Frank Turner and wife, of Van couver, B. C, are visiting with Jlrs. lur- ner's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm, l)oble- bower, of Rainier. Capt. Turner has been on the Yukon river run, from St. Michaels te Dawson for a number of years, but returned last October with the intention of making Vancouver his home. He is engaged in the real estate business at that place, and finds it more pleasant than life on the border of the Arctic circle. Mr. W. It. Huycke returned Friday night from the hot spring where he has been for the past six weeks taking treat ments for inflammatory rheumatism. He is much improved in health. j Mr. V. B. Jameson, who has been . 1 temporarily residing in Portland, was in Rainier last Monday looking afier his 225 business interests. j The taxable valuation of all the pro perty in the town of Kainier, including .; about two miles of the A & C railroad j is placed at $150,000, which is certainly 5 not more than one third of its real value.
