Hongkong, Oct. 15. Ilia British

burned at 8:10 o'clock yesterday morn
ing; while lying alongside htr wharf,
Hiinderdsot Chinese passengers were
burned to death and a valuable cargo
was destroyed. ! All the European pas

The steamer Hankow, with 2.0U0
Chinese pasaengaia, men, women and
children, aud seven Euiopeaus, and a
earao including 8,700 bales of matting,
660 bales of raw silk and 400 bales ol
waste silk, arrived from Canton at S

mnnrad at the wharf.
Her chlel officer reported to Captain
Branch that the ship was ante. The

to turn on the water through tbe flra

Captain Branch then awakened the
European passengers, who rushed down

Determined to Preserve Her Identity
and Will Refuse Jo;nt Statehood
Phoenix. Aris., Oct. 15. The terri
tory of Arisona. rich in American citi
senship, as well as natural resources, Is
making a determine! fight to retain Its
identity. The people aa a whole are
bitterly opposed to the plan of Joint
statehood with New Mexico. They ad
vance various reasons for tbeii oppoti
tion, some ol tbem potent and others of
little aoDarent weight. Whatever tbe
reason, they are overwhelmingly agalmt
joint statehcoJ, and will kill tha prop
osition at the polls next month. The
lesder of the "jointists in Jiorthern
Arisona acknowledges that be does not
count upon more than 15 per cent of
the vote in favor of jointure.
Tbe chief objection to union with
New Mexico appears to be based upon
the disparity in sise and quality of
population. Tbe Mexiean element in
New Mexico numbers at least eu per i
rent of the total population. In Ari
sona the Mexican vote ia about 15 per
cent of tbe total. Much of the Mexi
can population in Arisona is n ung
consisting of laborers on railroads and
rrigation enterprises, etc., while His
Mexicans living in New Mexico are, at
a rule, native of the territory.

Say Railroads Discriminate In Freight
Rates to Pacific Coaat.
Washington, Oct. 15. A complaint
has been made to the Intt-rstate Com
merce commission by tbe North Caro
lina Caseworkers' sssooiatinn, whose
membership consists of firms engsged
n the manufacture and ssle of furni
ture, aga.nst many lines ot railroads in
tbe West, because of alleged unjust and
discriminatory charges for the trans
rortation of farnituie, especially from
High Point, N. C, and Danville, Va.
to Pacific coast terminal points.
Tbe complainants declare tbst the
railroads charge tbem 11.70 per hun
dred pound for carrying furniiurt
trom tbe North Carolina territory to
Pacific coast points, and insist upon s
minimum carload weight ol 20,000
pounds, whereas tbey claim to be able
to put into a car only 12,000 pounds
of furniture. Tbey insiat, therefore,
i hat tbe rates are unreasonable and ark
the commission to issue an order re
quiring the railroads to limit 36-foot
carload lots uf furniture to 12,000
pounds.

St. Petersburg, Oct. 15. The minis

order forbidding officials and employes
of the conrt to rent rooms or otherwise

is due to tbe arrest of Klepnikoff and
