For pro duce of cow, Frakes got first. Forchain pion bull, 2 years old or oyer, Fiakes got tirst and lluzelwuod farm second. The award for champion aged cow went to Frakes. For champion heifer under 2 years, Frakes got first and the reserve champion award went to Hazelwood farm. The firtt for grand champion on both bnll and cow went to Frakes. We notice that the Washington paper makes no mention of the fact that the cattle achieving thi great victory came from Oregon ; but probably that was an oversight as the Washington papers are always keen to give full credit to the products of their sitter stale. We suggest to Mr. Frakes, however, that hereafter behave his stalls placarded ''Colombia Countv. Oiegcrn," in order that his home county utav receive credit for his good i work . HEUHST AHO HIS PLATFORM. The nomination of W. R. Hearst for Governor of the Empire State by the In dependence League and by the Demo cratic State Convention insures one of the most intereiftingcainpaigtis ever witness" ed in Xew York. The Republicans have pitted agaiuet him Mr. Hughe?, who made himself conspicuous by his ex poeure of the insurance scandals. He is probably the strongest man they could have selected, and it is generally believed that his nomination w as forced by President Rooevelt, in opposition to convicts. the other Republican boses for it must j upon the roads, letting each countv be admitted that the President is some thing of a boss himself. But Sir. Hughes is not going to have very smooth sledding, and it Ualtogether possible that lie mav be defeated. to the firm of Goldsmith & Loewenherg i who employ them in their penitentiary j stove factory, paying the State about 35 i cents per day, which is about one sixth j ol what free labor can be had for. These ! convict-made stoves compete with those j made by free labor and prevent the es tablishment of a stove factory in this State. Their employment in the manufacture of grain sacks would be of benefit to a large number of persons, but still it is not clear that the wheat growers of East ern Oregon and the Willamette Valley are entitled to have their grain sacks furnished them at cost by the Scate or that this is the best wav to euiplov the Why not put them to work if it so desires, have as many of them as may be deemed best, under such regulations as will secure their humane treatment j and prevent their escape. The men who ! would be the most benefited by grai n i Hearst is phenomenally strong with the sacks at cost are the very ones who least working people, to whom he has always been a 1'rm friend. He is independent and fearless, and has plenty of money to carry on hia campaign. His platform, announced before he received either nomination, and to which he still ad heres is worthy of close study, and is as follow s ; I am a Jeircrfon Democrat, and that, as I understand it is practically the same as a Lincoln Republican, for the Repub lican parly was formed to restore the action of the Guvernuient to the princi ples of Washington and Jefferson. I believe in the impartial enforcement of the laws as they exist. j I believe iu public ownership of public utilities. But the Dnl qualification for public ownership is honesty iu office and inde pendence in voting. I believe that the protective principle Is valuable iu iteelf but has been un reauonaby extended and outrageously hbtied. I believe in protection for infant in dustries. I believe in urotection for American labor. I believe the tariff j should bemodiUed and public on nership inaugurated, but that both should be done cautiously and conservatively, with due regard to the stability of business interests and the perpetuation on which we all depend. I believe iu the testraint and regula tion of tnikts mid monopolies by law. I believe in laljor unions and farmers' granges and organizations that promote the distribution of wealth, and I realize that the prosperity of legitimate business men d -pciid upon the purchasing power of the maeee. I believe in every measure that gives the people more direct control cf the Government. I believe in direct nominations and opeu primaries. I believe in purity in politics. I will run in thiscampuign, not merely representing the Independence League, not merely the Democratic paity, but I hope, the people of the State of New York. I appeal to them and make my pledge to them to retain for them the lights they Hill haveand to restore to them the liberties they have lost. It seems to us that this will meet the npprovul uf Ihe people. Ilis utterance need any such assistance from the State the owners of the vast wheat ranches of j Eastern Oregon. i ULOOt i'OISOMNG Results from chronic constipation, which is quickly cured by Dr. King.s Xew Life Pills.
