Arnold went to Portland Monday ol this

Chan. J. Lvtlc, representing the Pacific
Railway and Navigation Co., was in the
city on Tuewlay ol last week, to preseut
the road'a propoition, which is, that they
will accept our ofler to guorantee me
right-of-way to Vernonia, provided, how
ever, that we present with the contract
the bond for the deeds to the ngnt ot
way. The contract has been signed bv
twenty of our citizens, but so fur only
seven ol the individual owners ol lands
through which the road Is lo pats, have
signed tbe bonds for deed, and we un
derstand that twenty one have not yei
signed. The director of the road want
the larger portion on tbe other side be
fore they will accept. Our railroad com
mittee had a meeting last Saturday to
consider the matter, and after discussing
It in all its phase decided to appoint a
special committee to see all who have not
signed, get signatures ol those who have
already eold they will donate the right-of-way
and to estimate what they think
is a urt and proper claim for dauinges to
those who will not sign, inane a acnuiie
,i,l final offer nnd thus to settle tbe
matter so far as tbe committee U con
cerned. Tbe road want to know im
mediately, for if we do come up to our
own proposition in a business way, Mr.
Lytle says they will be compelled to go
to the ocean by the Salmonberry route.
Judson Weed and Louis Seigert were ap
pointed on tbe committee and they ex
pect to begin work within a lew days,
and will push It to a finish, to that the
geuerol committee may report and turn
over tbe contract and bond to tbe road.
