One was of the opinion that it was no one's busi ness, except the parent's, if a youngster frequented saloons or become a drunk ard, while the other held the broader view that individuals do not live for themselves alone or by themselves, but that every man has his influence on the community and therefore it ia a matter of general concern when youngsters take the first step towards becoming criminals or common nuisances. Roth lads were earnest in the support of their views; in fact, so earnest that they both forgot there are other vices besides in temperance and po'ired out a stream of vulgarity and profanity that would have disgraced the most hardened barroom . loater. The enticements of the saloou are manifold. It offers shelter, a pleas ant game of cards or( billiards, the soci ety and conversation of others, a look at the newspapers, and various other al lurements that are especially attractive to the young and to the homeless work ingmen who meet there to pass away the evening or an idle day; and, as the drink habit becomes stronger, men look upon the saloon as a necessity, and many refuse to live where it is not permitted. It is an evil, but it is an understandable evil. Profanity and vulgarity, however, as naoits, are absolutely without use or excuse, and it is bard to account for tiieir existence. They are repulsive and they add nothing to the strength of an argu ment. No one lik?s to listen to a con versation interlarded with oaths and vulgar expressions, and those who use them seem to be unaware of the fact, and to have no idea of the manner in w hich they are defiling their conversa tion. It is one of the earliest acquired ol the bad habits that deface men's cha- j the cemetery, the team running afoul of ruciers, aan it seems io oe one o: tne ; a stump, the wagon striking it with con hardest to cure. It is of the Sharpies tubular variety, the local agent being O. B. Miilmsten. The Children's lay exercises at the church last Sundav were largely attend ed. In the morning Rev. A. E. The decorations were excellent. Quite a number of -our citizens who have been employed out in the logging camps and other places were at home over the Fourth, among them being Josh Rose, Guy Mills, Perry Mellinger, Roy Webber, Ora Lavender, and Mrs. E. Mr. Myers was thoughtful enongh to jump on the animal's head and hold her down until Mrs. Myers could pnll the child out, and fortunately she was unhurt, nor were any of the others or the horse ; and the boggy was only slightly damaged, Tiie other was a genuine runaway bv II (. When 8 youngster hears his father, whom he regards as a g.jod man. rip out an oath, it is hard for that father to lecture his boy upon the evil of profanity, and yet none of us like to hear vulgar or profane words rolling from tlie lips of our chil dren. How to successfully combat the evil is a hard question, but of course the start must be made nt the home and in the public schools. The teacher is more npt to come in contact with it than the parents, because the rough play of the school grounds ia apt to provoke rough language, therefore it should be t' e care , of each teacher to do his best to impress Mr. Clark and Mrs. W. W. Allen, vio lently to the ground. Mr. Clark was not hurt, but Mrs. Allen sustained a frac ture of the shoulder and some severe bruises aBout the head, as well as a hard shock to the brain and nervous system. Dr. Hatfield was called and reduced the fracture and dressed the wounds. At present writing Mrs. Allen is doing fair ly well, except for the suffering.
