HLAGO. l-PITUH AND l'ROl'KlKTOK. - - - ! fl o0j W One copv, otic year, Six monili Lcal notices : in advam-e '5 cents per line I - ! FRIDAY. June 20, OUU COUNTY. TikcaWk at the article published Ibis week on onr mills ar.d fictories. then mail the paper to a Iriend in the Eat who wants to come to n live county. We are indebted for the items to the Tiinbeiniaii, of Portland, a p.iper which makes a specialty of keeping track of the lumbering and kindred in dustries. Of course it does not show ali that is being done, but enough to make it clear that business in every part of the county is booming as nevea Iwfore, at these itcu.s are taken from a single issue of a trade paper. It suva nothing ot the great dairying industry, which has grown with aston ishing rapidity and lias extended from a comparatively small section in the south end of the county nntil now the cream cans go to Portland daily from the most . remote portion of the 'Nehalem Valley, with the result that a constantly in creasing stream of profit is flowing into the pockets of our small dairymen, wLo but si few years ago were unable to rea lize any profit whatever from their cows. We are at the door of a great market and as fast as the logging camp takes the timber from the soil there will beopportunitiesin all linesof agriculture. The progress that has been made ia the past is as nothing to that which will be made in the immediate future. Within two years the Hilltboro-Xehalem road will be completed to a junction with thd Northern Pacific at Scappoose, and the products of the Nehniem Valley will be within two hours conveyance to the metropolis. Not only will tho-e who have kept their faith for to many years be rewarded, but there will be homes for thousands of new settlers. Stamp land can now be bought for a nominal price (probably from $2.50 to fo.OO an acre) that within four years will be worth five times that amount. No section of country in Oregon offers ench splendid inducements to the intellent f g'icultur ist (especially the fruit grower). We have repeatedly demonstrated the superior quality of our fruits in competition with Hood Eiver and Southern Oregon. One acre of Northern Spy apples will yield a profit to the intelligent, np-to-date grow er, of from $250 to $500 and even $700 annually. This is no dream or fairy story but can be proven to any one who is looking for an investment. What, then, hinders the more rapid development of the county? Nothing except the fact that we do not advertise, and no transportation company is suffi ciently interested to do the advertising for us. You will look in vain for any advertisement whatsoever of Columbia County in the literature of the O. R. & V. or Southern Pacific Railroads. We made abetter stowing of onr dairy cat tle at the Lewis & Clark Exposition than any county in the State or any state in the Union, vet the article on dairying in the recently published pamphlet of the O. R. & N. and Southern Pacific Com panies contains no mention of the fact, and Columbia County is absolutely ig nored, no reference to its existence lie ing permitted in either of these pamph lets, and very little in any publication of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Good settlers mean increased taxable wealth, better schools, better roads, and increosed opportunities. Ii we want ali these things we must make some effort to secure them. The county court has the right ar.d it is its duty to take this matter up and to set aside a leasona'ile gum every year for the pur pose of making known to prospective immigrants the great advantages pre sented by Columbia Countv. T1IK GLORIOUS FOURTH. Fourth of July celebrations will be held next Wednesday at Vernonia, Scappoose, Deer Inland, Rainier and probably at other points in Columbia !, . , . . Countv. The Misthopesth.lt patriotism will be stimulated by these exercises and that in the niid-t of their jollifica tions the people niil not lose sight of the fact that liberty is not license. The day should be celebrated in a manner ; becftimiiiiiir mi enlightened community j Ii should ben day of sane enjoyment: and not a carnival of dninkeiiefs.
