H that made labor organisations regard me as an enemy, j am willing to be so classed. apologize lor no vote I cast In th. legislature and any person or set of tier- sons, feeling aggrieved at any official act or mine, Is at perfect liberty to make suctt criticism as they desire. While ...ri.iocr oi ine mate senate I did not vole lor or against any measure that, un cr me same circumstance and with the same knowledge, I would not vote in the same way again. Wa 1 a - i oas wen reported tliat I voted against t' e Fellow Hervant Law. I did not vote against the Fellow Servant Law: on the contrary, I voted, together with every other member of tbe State Senate, : i ..... ' m i.ivor oi tuat law. The particular measure which aroused the antagonism of certain people, was what was known at "Senate Bill No. 00" introduced by Senator Malarkey. beiner a bill limiting the hours of service of rail road employes, and In my judgment, con taining many obnoxious features. Tlie vote upon that bill will be found on pan 2!3 of the Senate Journal of 1905, and the ole upon that measure, opon its fi nal passage, waa as follows: those voting yea in lavor of the bill, were Senators Browuell, Coshow, Howe, Malarkey. Miller and Wright, a total of six in favor of the bill: tboae voting nay and in oppo sition to tne out were Senators Averv. Booth, Bowerman, Carter, Coe Coke. Croisan, Farrar, Haines, Hobson, Hod son, llolman, Lay cock, Loughary, McLonald, Fierce. Rand. Sicbel. Smith. Tu.iv Wbealdon and Mr. President: there be ing two member of the Senate absent, to-wit, Senator May and Nottingham, making a total of 22 voting nay, aix vot- yua, ami two absent. It has been reported that I have said that if I could have my way, I would wipe off from the statutes all laws favor- ble to labor. This statement is abso- utcly without foundation and was never made by me at any time or place, any body's statement to the contrary not withstanding. So far as it ia claimed that I am a cor poration lawper. I have only to aay that I represent quite a number of clients, some of whom are coporations, but most of whom are individuals. I do not khow a ingle lawyer in the state, having any considerable amount of business, who oes not number among his clients a greater or less number of corporations, and I do not know a lawyer in tbe slate who is not perfectly willing to act as at torney for corporations whenever their business is offered to him, the same a he would for any individual. So far as the primary law is concerned I am neither in favor of it or opsed to it; I am however in favor of giving it a fair trial, and if it is found to work satis factorily to retain it upon tbe statutes and ii not to repeal it. JOHN' L. RAND, How to Sec are Large Potatoes. C. II. Andrews gives his experience in the cultivation of potatoes as follows: "I am convinced from my experiments that it will pay to thin potatoes to one stalk in a place and so give all the strength and moisture of the land to those that remain. It might be well to cut out all eyes of the potatoes when planted, except such as are desired to grow, and so tave the trouble of thinning out tbe field to some extent. There is no profit in growing a large crop of potatoes unless they are of merchantable size. Tbe largest potatoes are always found where the largest and strongest stalks grow, and the small ones where they are small and weak. It is a mistake, in my judgment, to plant 'small seed or to cut the large ones to one or two eyes to save feed and to reduce the number of plants, as the common practice is. It is much better to plant whole potatoes of good site, or, if large, to cut them at most only in halves. Of course, it will cost more to seed a field, but with good seed prop erly thinned, much better result can be obtained. "If one desires to raise the largest quantity possible from a few seed, greet results can be obtained by taking off the shoots and transplanting, but the pota toes will not grow large. When the early rose was first introduced I bought a pound of seed, for which I paid 3, and cut them in halves and planted them iu a cold frame. A fast as the plants grew large enough to transplant, I took them off and set them in a field. I continued to do this until too late to set out more. I obtained from that pound of seed over one and one-half bushels potatoes. The first taken off produced the largest pota toes. The later growth made weaker plant, and from them were tuber pro portionately smaller. It may not be known to some people that each eye in a potato is capable of producing a large number of shoots ; as fast aa taken off others will grow. Usually not more than two or three to each eye will start when limited, but Hint number is far too many to be left to grow."
