The railroad corporation of tfiqUnitepl Suites are oting every means in tliuir 'power to create pullic sentiment against TreniJent Roosevelt's programme for government control and regulation of common carriers. .There, la no doubt jtrfiateVar thjjt tiiey arc expending great sums of money for this purpose, and as tli work is being carried on under the 'direction of able men who understand the best methods, t.hey ate taking into consideration the small newajiapcra of ,11)0 country, and are sending out free supplements to all editors who will make 'use of tVieni, '.The editor of the SJi't ' offered the exclusive use of these supple- ' menu for Columbia Coantv, bat declined to take'tlietn, and is sorry to see that his brother granger over at Houlton has 'fallen into the trap. Of course at first .these supplements will not contain a! great deal of the railroads' arguments, though few articles have appeared, showing the great amount of wagos paid out to employes, the argument being that if rates were reduced to the shippers a reduction of wage would be necessary. .This is the same argument made by the railroad employes to the President on 'the occasion of a reoeut visit. It was ably met by Mr. Roosevelt by the utate- "ment that no injustice would be done 'any corporation, and that there was often more harm done by a low rate. given for the rnjrpose of crqsbiug oil 'competition, than bv high rates. What is an ted is justice, and the railroad companies, by their free supplements, are endeavoring t make the people be lieve justice is on their side, ir.ster.d of with the I'resideut. Country papers that are circulating these free supplements without being aware of their object will undoubtedly drop them as the plut de-velope. The couqty assessor of Multnomah County. Assessed the railroad corporations at a valuation of $17,000 per mile upon their roadbeds and the couuty board of equalization (Repub lican) sustained the assessment. In making the assessment every foot, of sidetrack was included. The county assessor .of Columbia Couuty (Republican) assessed the railroad corporations in Columbia Count' at a valuation of ?iS,ooo per mile upon their roadbed, and the county Loardof .equalization (Democratic) reduced his assess ment to $12,000. Iu making the assessment in this county no sidetracks .were counted, so that the valuation in Mult-npmah'i-as considerable higher than in this county. THIS MORAL WAVE KKACHKS ASTQUIV. There is no stronger testimony to the Jure of the "moral wave" that is swee p 'ing this country than the fact that it has readied Astoria, and a municipal cam paign is to be fought there in which the contestants are either lo or against an "open town." We remember, in the days long gone by, that we had an am bition to conduct a newspaper in the city of canneries and visited the place "Jor the pnrpoae of prospecting it with that end in view, but decided Uiat Uie necessary outlay for being a good fellow in order to secure the patronage of As toria's leading bnsiness men the suloun and gambling house keepers would more than balance the income that could be secured, Judge Tage was presiding over the county's destinies at that time, and in the course of our v anderings we Ctrolled into his office, and ho gave us the glad fjand and good advice: "If you come here to start a paper," (aid the 'Judge, "You don't want to waste any 'time catering to the respectable element 'of this town because there isn't any." He was a wise judge and, understood hie people. The slums of Astoria controlled Vie city in every department. Politi cians were their servants, and no man could succeed iu business if he had the Duck hunters last Sunday got very poor returns for their wt.rk. The iitiiuvnse Total loSS of valuation $152,400 nock of duck thai have fre.iientcd the hike in thU neighborhood acviu to have At a three per cent tax for all purposes thlS WOUld yield nwn to other clime, probably scared a revenue ot 54,072. Moreover, it the same kina Ot a ooara 01 equalization is continued in control it means a continuing gift of approximately the same amount. A ereat howl was raised dunng the last campaign over the alleged extravagance of the county court, and every little trifle was magnified to secure the election of the opponeuts of the Republican party. The Mist is and always has been willing to admit that mistakes were made ; bnt what a howl would go up from our friends, the enemy, if a Democratic assessor had fixed the valuation of the railroads in this county at $iS,ooo per mile and a Republican board of equal ization had cut it down to $12,000. How handy that amount would come in buildiug that Nehalem road from Pittsburg to the county seat. VERNOXIA ITEMS.
