Having the I Jirjfest Circulation of any Hipri ill vu.ui.iia vviiiivj THE WSVjs COLUMBIAN EDITION, FOll THE WIFE BEATER The law establishing the whipping Ht for wife beaten goei into effect the 19th dr of the present month, ami thereafter the brutes who seem to think a woman is their personal property, to maltreat at their pleasure, will eel the lath. That is, they wi!l if persons cog nixant of tbe fact of such crimes do fheiir duty snd give the necessary in formation to the grand Jury. jyife beating is certainly one of the most re volting of climes, and there can be no possible excuse or palliation for it. lien erally it is unprovoked and indulged in because the devil himself possesses the stronger anniuial with a wicked desire to indict punishment upon a helpless woman, and tfie law seems unable to provide a remedy. Eyeu the new law will fail to protect the victims for the reason that experience shows that women will rarely testify against their husbands ;n such matiers. Often they are unable to earn a living for themselves and there fore fear the only result of a complaint .would be to throw them upon the charity of the world. In many cases, also, they rerest rained by tear of greater harm, as the brute who beats his wife ua within him the instinct of a murderer and would not hesitate, were it not for fear of the gallows, to punish with death any attempt to bring hitn to justice. II j jhe woman c old master op the neces sary nerve the wife beater would often find bis punishment as Maybrick found his, and pay with fcif life the just penal ty fur bis outrageous conduct. Men who practice this crime are gen erally cowards and the knowledge jthat whenever they attempt violeiu gainst their wives they might expect a pup of poisoned coffee or a knife between their ribs would probably hare a deter ment effect. Editor Mist: Having for the last thirty years been very much interested hi the development of the mineral re sources of Columbia County, and fail ing to see am article giving the particu lars as to what is hidden away in the bills and ravines, I ask lh.it a little COISTI AXD STATE (,RTXtiE Pomona at Bearer State tiranjre at forest tirore. Pomona met at the hall of the Beaver Valley Grange on Saturday last, with an attendance of abont fifty from the local granges of Colnmbia County. Teams met the visitors at Rainier and conveved them over the hills to the comfortable new borne of the Beaver Valley patrons, where attention was first called to a .bountiful dinner which the ladies hud in DRirXKE.VNESS IX MINORS. It if gratifying to nate (he successful prosecution in Corvallis of two men f.r giving liquor to a minor. Tne shockiuf result of debauching a lad with liquor was witnessed in the Agricultural Col lege town a few years ao, in the death p( the intoxicated boy while resisting arrest, and that of the Town Marshal while in pursuit of his official duty in the premise. One lesson of this kind ahonlj suffice for Corvailis fjr many years, if not indefinitely. The prosecu tion above noted indicates that it is still remembered by tlu prosecuting Attor pey, at least. If the law covering cases of this kind was relentlessly enforced, we niyht reasonably hope to bare an end of drunken minors on village s; reels, and .of the recruiting of jails and state's prisons from the ranks of young men of eighteen and twenty. This is a phase ff vice that can be controled and prac tically stamped out. To doubt this is to assume or admit that men in authority in the community cannot control its boy.
