distributed among those exhibiting stock.
Columbia County has the three best dairy
herds in the Stute and the county exhibit
will get credit lor them in making up the
points. With our dairy stock, fish,
minerals, timber and agricultural pro
ducts, there i no reason why we should
not secure one of the prite offered by the
Kxpotltion Coinmllon. Let each man
and woman do his and her share. The
Grunge is pledged to do Its best ,and that
ajwlls success.
Mr. Harry West is still in the North
raci'ic Raiiltorimii at Portland, where he
bus been for about seven week. During
that time he lm hnd three operation
performed and tin suffered a great deal.
His trouble now is confined to bit right
foot, but It is thought he will soon re
cover. Quite number of his Columbia
County friends have visited him, and he

Indian who wa well known here twenty
year ago, told him that, with hi father,
he accompanied Lewi and Clark from
St. Helen lo the mouth of the Columbia,
and that tbe oak tree near the mill is in
reality the tree under which Lewi and
Clark camped when here. Wyan tthott
was a child at the time, and the story
wits told him by bis father. '
District convention of the Knights of
Pythias meets at Asioria on the filth day
of April, comprising Aatoria, N'ecanicum,
Rainier, and St, Helen Lodge. The
drill will be In the rank of Knight, and
St. Helen expects to send a thoroughly
equipped delegation, and will do Its best
to bring back the firat prise. The Rath

Ut Friday morning at about three
o'clock, fire waa discovered in tlx cellar
of 'Grandpa" Richardson's bous by
Margurct fiwett wlto wa awakened by
the swell of itnoke. After hard work on
the part of Mr. Swell and daughter,
"Grandpa" Richardson and son Tom
were awakened, but the only way Tom
conld get Mis Lewi was to break down
the door to her bedroom, which was lock
ed. In about ten minute the house wa
burned to the ground and in another
forty minutes the house of John Morris
and L. Swett were also laid low. It took
hard work to save Ole Laughlin't boua
)ut acroa tbe street. Tbe beat was
terrific. Nothing at all was saved from
Richardson' bouse. A few thing were
saved Iroui the bouse of John Morris
and L. Swett, but the heat scorched tbem
making tbem practically worthies. . Tbe
property of Mr. Richardson, valued at
IHMjO, is insured lor f 1300. John Morris'
furniture is valued at f00. He ia insured

The origin ol the fire is unknown.
Yesterday' fire demonstrated not only
Rainier' tad need of a good fire depart
ment with a complete fire apparatus, but
also that of all the little towns along tbe
river.
A pleasant surprise wa given Earl
Silva Friday evening in honor of bis
fifteenth birthday. Tbe evening wa
spent ia game and was pleasantly enjoy
ed by all. Tbe girl present were Ger

Miss Lewis is very happy about it aa they

The fire sufferers offer their heartfelt
thank to all who assisted them in the
fire. Tbe neighbors were very kind and
worked like Trojans.
