In order to prevent th. appropriation of postage stamps, paid for by the county, for private purposes, Judge Welistet and Commissioners Lightuer and Hornes, of Multnomah County, are considering the advisability of issuing stamped envelope upon which shall be printed; "Office of (stating the name of the office to whleb. the envelope are issued); to be used for county purpose only." The en velopes will be of about the same form at those issued by the Government tor oiti- ciul purposes, but there will be no pen alty clause attached, for the reason that the conrt cannot prescribe a penalty for the misuse of the envelope, The result the court hope to obtain is that any offi cial or any of hi ubordinate who may use an envelope so stamped tor private purpose tl'iiy be reorted bji the person who receive (h letter, and hla future supply of envelope be therefor reduced. Look out a little, Mr, Mitchell, we're onto you. Tlie ateauier Geo. W. Elder, which for many years has plied on the route between Portland and San Francisco, wa wreck 1 on a rocky reef near Goble at ! about 10:00 last Saturday night while on her way to San Francisco with a miscel laneous cargo, composed in large pari of flour, crackers, and paper from the Ore City Paper Mill. The accident wa cauwd by her steering gtrer getting out of order. A soon as thi was discovered the engine were reversed, but the strong current carried the vessel egainst a sunk en rock. The vessel and cargo are now in the hands of the insurance company. Quite a number of passengers were on board, but no lives were lost. Tlie ves sel now hangs across the reef with about a fathom of water forwarded and ucarly a hundred feet aft. There is said to be danger that she will slide off the reef Into deep water and becomd a total loss. The steamer Costa Rica will take the HIder' place upon the route temporarily, but it is thought that as soon a possible the company wtll replace her with a 6rst- etas, modern vessel. Hereafter hunters will have to pay a state license of f I per year; no game will be permitted to be told, and the number of dnckt will be 25 per doy or 60 per week for each hunter.
