The monitor Wyoming and the torpedo boat i!c4troyer. the Paul Jone! and the Per ry, steamed up the river on the way to Portland, and, as it wa nearly dark when they arrived opposite St. Helen, they "tied up" lor the night and later gave an exhibition with their flash lights. To those ol u who had never seen the powerful lights used it was an instructive as well as an entertaining display. John Sobieski, of Yankton, attempted to commit suicide at .'! o'clock a. m. Thursday morning by cutting hi throat with a razor. Sobieski had Wen a great sufferer from an injury received some years ago by being crushed by a lulling tree, and this is given as the cause ol his desire to leave this world. He procured the razor and took it to bed with him Wednesday night, and at about 3 yester day morning he shouted to his wile that he bad killed himself. Dr. Ross was summoned and found that Sabieski had slashed his throat almost from ear to car, but had failed to open the wind pipe, and it is probable that he will recover, though he exprtsies no desire to live, and is sorry that bis attempt at self-destruction was unsuccessful. Sabieski is an ol ' resident ol Columbia county and has always been a hard working man and a good citizen. He is about 60 years ol age.
