Hatches 1st Stagnant Water, Passe Through Three Btasres of Life and Its come a Knajr Beeker After Blood Disseminator of Dlsenao, There are a few facta which may in the future be Incorporated In the btoa raphy ot the mosquito, facta which have been collected partly by the In quiry of scientists, and partly by the observations of laymen who livs in sections where tbe pestiferous Insect thrives In great numbers. The mos quito Is observed In three different forma, as aa, egg, In larvae, as wiggle-tall, and as a mosquito with wings. Eggs are batched by the warmth of the sun. One mosquito may lay 1,000, 000 eggs. Often many of these eggs are destroyed. Mosquitoes cannot propagate without the aid of water. The egga are deposited on' the surface of the water. Eggs hatch within a few weeks after they are deposited by the female. They develop wiggle-tails, the curious forms of life often found In rain barrels, cisterns, In gutters filled with stagnant water and in stagnant pools. In this wiggle-tall stage of his development the mosquito breathes through his tall. He spends this part of his life In rushing to and from the surface of the water. When he reach es the anrface, with head down, he shoves two delicate syphons through the water level, supplies his lungs with the needed air and dives under the water again, where he sucks In the vegetable Juices necessary to his sus tenance. He remains a wiggle-tall for a week or ten days, when his wings de velop and he becomes a navigator of the air and sails forth to torment mem bers of the human family and other "animals. He Is fond of animal blood. He needs It In his business. He cannot DroDasrate without It He also likes suear. Blood, sugar snd vegetable Juices are his principal diet A mos quito's food capacity Is rongniy esu inted at one drop of blood, ills Qi- menslons are uncertain. Tbe gray mosquito, the day tormen- to, is probably the smallest nneiy. He Is of a very light weight, not tip ping the beam at more than one-fourth of a grain, and often not weighing quite so much. Some of them are so light that when unfed that they will not disturb the balance of the most delicately poised scales. The small mosaulto is the treacherous kind. He always lights on the under side of the hand or arm, apparently knowing tnat he ia beyond the reach of the eye. He is tbe same fellow who will crawl under the edges of the bar or slip un- ler the sheet There Is another and larger variety, a kind that wm drop on you like a nase ot snow, .uey land with their labium, or lance, un folded and with point down, and they begin operations at once, while the mosquito of this brand welgha about one-half of a grain, he seems to have the tounage and potentiality of a pile driver when he punctures the skin. There are about 250 known varieties of mosquitoes In this section of the world. The mosquito s labium, the thing he- stings with, Is of uncertain length. It Is as sharp as a needle, hol low like a hair, and It Is tnrougn this that he sucks blood Into his system. The mosquito cannot stand a strong wind. He seeks a low place when tne ind la hleh. He never gets more than 100 yards from the place of his birth. The eirzs are deposited on still, stag' nant water. Otherwise they will De destroyed. The life of the mosquito covers a span of sixty days. As a dis seminator of diseases, scientific men have agreed that his responsibility is verv heavy. New Orleans Democrat FIRE-PROOF RAILWAY CARS. What Prnajiau Government Officials Seek to Accomplish. The managers of American railways intent, to their own great advantage as well as to that of their patrons, take a leaf out of .the book of the govern ment railway control of Prussia, r These officials have ordered that ex nerlraents should be made looking to ward the substitution upon the 30,000 miles of railroads which they operate jt non-combustible cars for the more or lees inflammable boxes In which the public are now transported from place to place. Tbe steel trucks are, of course, already comparatively safe from destruction by fire, but the con struction of the superstructure of these coaches has always been of such a na ture as to be something of a menace to the traveler's safety. The walls and floors and generat trim of -passenger cars have ordinarily been constructed of woods that are peculiarly Inflamma ble. and the use of oils In their clean sing and decoration has Intensified tbe danger. The Prussian experiments, in recognition of these racts, are to be made In the direction of making floors and walls of materials chemically treated so as to make them non-com' bustlble, and of tbe construction of seats stuffed with Ore-proof cocoa nut fiber and having asbestos coverings. It Is an Important step and In the rieht direction; and in a country like our own, where there is so much more travel and a comparatively greater duty for conserving the security of the traveling public over more than 180,000 miles of road bed. It would seem as If It would be a wise precedent for tbe railway authorities to follow. As role our railways are exceptionally well managed, and the traveler in the United States gets a vast amount of Lcomfort and convenience at a very slight personal risk, but the further step toward the making of fire-proof coaches would serve to reduce that risk to a minimum which would amount almost to Its total extinction. Writing paper, or, Indeed, paper of any kind, is usually at a premium among soldiers on active service. Many very curious substitutes havs arrived from our army lu South Africa. One of the commonest has been uiealie leaves. "Mealies" Is the South African name for malie. Round the malae cob grows number of strong enveloping sheaths which, when dry, turn to a pale yellow color and can then be writ ten upon. After Colenso there was found grasped in the stiffened hands of a dead soldier a piece of leather with a dying message scrawled upon It with a stump of pencil It was a layer of the sole of the dead man's boot, which had probably beeu loosened with much marching, and which he had contrived to rip ofT. It safely reached the poo fellow's family In England. From ths Philippines, too, some curi ous letters havs been received by the friends of American soldiers, says Lon don Tlt-Bita. One of ths most Inge nious was t piece of native bamboo, about a foot long, on which an address had been carved with a penknife. Tbe letter was Inside this hollow tube, and held there by wooden pins at each end. As a matter of fact, although Emperor Will iam la the ereater kisser of men among the sovereigns of the world, he Is also heartr handshaker ana tne ireem of all monarchs In this particular, m dAA he and the King of Italy are the only supreme rulers who shake hands at all with other man Dromer eu elens. This sometimes be fore a crowd of thousands of onlookers. not to mention a regiment or so of sol rilpra. But the war lord will shake hands with almost anyone. He has a grip that Is famous among bis subjects, too, and the favor of his hand grasp is not assiduously sought by those who have had some experience with It His Majesty has a big, strong hand, with muscles like Iron. They have been cultivated by many years of sword ex ercise. His handshake Is one that Is not soon forgotten, and when he greets a visitor with a handshake they say at court, "His Majesty has made an other lasting Impression.' This grip, It Is only fair to say, he reserves for strong men. For the op- rvnaita sex be has a hand that Is as soft as velvet and a courtesy that elegant Vagaries of Memory. What is remembered depends, of course, much on Individual tempera ment or intellectual tendency, but the Incidents are always in the nature of milestones. Thousands of competent persons can never recollect a date, even when the day was of Importance to themselves or when, as, for Instance, when preparing for examination, they had specially tried to remember ac curately. An enormous number of people are embarrassed through life by a dllficul ty in recollecting faces, yet kings, po licemen and artists rarely or never for get one. The present writer has reached the age when the difficulty of recalling names quickly becomes an noying, yet he never forgets tbe num ber of a house or shop If be has once heard or seen It The broad truth Is, says the London Spectator; that mem ory is almost ss individual a possession as character and that the historian when Quoting personal testimony must make up' his own mind whether he is listening to Herodotus or fo Mr. f Every reader can fill In the blank. - Common sense extracts more solid comfort from life than genius does. .SUMMER COLDS Produce Chronic Catarrh, iff Madams Isabella Kllsa Bavsas. Madame Isabella KUen Baveas, Life Governor Grand Lodge of Free Masons of England, in a letter from Hotel Bars toga, Chicago, 111., says: This summer while traveling I contracted a most persistent and an noyingcoid. My head ached, my eyes and nose seemed constantly running, my lungs were sore and I lost ray ap petite, health and good spirits. Doc tors prescribed for me all manner of pills and powders, but all to no pur pose. . , "I advised with a druggist and he spoke so highly of a medicine called reruns, that he Induced me to try my first bottle of patent medicine. How ever, it proved such a help to me that I soon purchased another bottle and kept on until I wss entirely well." Madame Isabella Ellen Baveas. Summer colds require prompt treat ment. They are always grave, and sometimes dangerous. The prompt ness and surety with which i'eruna acts In these cases has saved many lives. A large dose of Peruna should be takon at U i p-niuw or a cold in summer, followed by small and oft repeated doses.
