If there I to be very blgh water thi year it I about time that some vis ible evidence wa being manifested. .Some people report a great qnautitv of mow in the mountain to the sunt, while other eay there i very little mow and that resident of the Mnake river basin do not look for very high water in that Itreara. Superintendent Copeland presented the diploma, and every oitiaen of our town 1 pleated, in deed, at the splendid showing made for the year' work. The class ia now ready to take up the higher branches, which hereafter will be taught in our public school. In the personal column In Tuesday' Oregonlan, appeared tbi item; "H. G. Guild, formerly editor of the Oregon In dependent, at Salem, passed through Portland yesterday on his way to Pros per, Yakima county, Wash., where he iha purchased the Froaeer Record. Mr, Guild waa member of the Kalem Press Club, one of the organisations of the kind composed exclusively of actual newspaper men, and was always a factor ia the elevation ot the standard of news paper ethic. " Mr. Guild was one time a resident of this county, at Vernonia, where, until right recent years, hi pa rents resided. He ha brother, J. . Uuild, residing at Columbia City. At a bualnesa meeting of the member of the Congregational church of thli city, held Monday evening, the resigna tion of Mr. C. B. I'hilbrook, pastor, was tendered and accepted. The pastor's iheaith has fast .been failing, and the be lief that a change, temporary, at least, might prove benetlcial, was the cause ot this action. Mr. Philbrook has been In our midst about six years, and we be lieve there I not a person in the county with whom he has come in oontact, who will not regret to learn that hi minis terial career ia to be cut off in our midst The Influence for good of Mr. I'hilbrook nd his estimable wife, both In and out ol the church, has been very great, and their loan, should they decide to go and remain away, will be keenly (alt. About ithe first of June Mr. 1'hllbrook expects to take nn the reo-ular line ot work at Condon, in Gilliam county, to which place the beat wishe of a host of people go with him. There I every indication now that a igood, wide sidewalk from St. Helens well out toward Houlton ia soon to be a realization. At the regular meeting of the city council held Monday evening an ordinance to the effeot that such a walk should be built, at the expense of the property owners, wa pasted, and will be effective in a few day. Thi contemplated improvement is one that has been of public demand for a long time and Its realisation will be a source of gratification and pardonable pride to a multitude ot people. The ordinance demands that tor a portion of the dis tance the walk Is to be eight feet wide, and the rest ot the way six feet wide. This walk is to extend to the toot of the liill, near Plank's residence, and from the material now in the walk there can be constructed a good walk the remainder of the way to Houlton. The ordinance . provide also that this improvement hall be made within sixty day. Clatskaule Brief. W. H. Conyar wa at the county tent , mst uu ivgBi ouainess.
