It baa lately been shown tbat nickel ia found In aoot, and bene tbat nlckeJlferoua dost may be terrestrial. Gallium, also, ts found In all aluminous minerals. In many flue dusts. In many Iron ores. Tbe water rises to the sur face through wells, averaging about stiO feet In depth. Mauy of these wells were made In ancient times, during tbe Soman occupation. They fertilise broad areas of cultivated lands. Interspersed with palm groves. Tbe success 0 this system of irrigation In Dakbla Is Inter esting In connection with tbe projects for supplying moisture to some of our Western plains which are similarly un derlain by bidden supplies of water. The continually increasing demand for India rubber, and tbe great Interest manifested In all efforts to prevent waste of the trees from which rubber Is derived, have led our consuls tn coun tries where these trees grow to collect many valuable facts concerning them. Consul Goldscbmldt st La Gualra re cently transmitted to Washington some highly Interesting statements about tbe rubber, or caoutchouc, trees, of the up per Orinoco by Dr. Lucien Morlsse, who has made extensive personal Investiga tions In that region. Dr. Morlsse makes the somewhat surprising state ment that the prohibition of tbe Vene snelan Government against tbe felling of the trees Is altogether unnecessary, because "It relates to an Immense for est measuring upward of 74,000,000 acres, where caoutchouc exists in abundance, and which It would require millions and millions of hands to ex ploit whereas It only con ts Ins three or four thousand Indians, not more than the tenth part of whom are engaged in the work." Some Interesting details have lately been published concerning the use of ozone in purifying water. Ozone is oxy gen in a highly active condition and it occurs in small quantities in the air of the sea and of the mountains. Near Berlin an establishment baa been erect ed for the purpose of experimenting on the effects of ozone In ridding water of the microbes it contains. Ozonised sir containing from 2 to 8 grams per cubic meter (a cubic meter equals 230.09 gal lons and a gram Is about 15 grains) is passed upward into a tower which Is filled with flints and In Its passage meets the water coming down snd thus acts upon It It bas been shown that as regards water from the Spree, the number of microbes was decreased from 600,000 per cubic centimeter (.081 cubic Inch to 10, which Is practically nil. The total cost Is set down at 33 cents per 1,000 cubic feet Ozone has long been known as "nature's disin fectant" and Its application to the puri fication of water becomes, therefore, a matter of great interest If the cost can be reduced this mode of purifica tion may have a cbance of widespread adoption. JUST AS GOOD. Backwoods Merchant WbnAIwaya Had What a Customer Wanted. Abel Judkins kept the corner store in Centervllle, snd it was bis boast tbat no man who patronized blm need lack for anything he wanted, provided be had tbe wherewithal to pay. Occasionally some unreasonable per son would auk for a commodity not in cluded in Abel's list; but if be did so, he was either provided with some thing which Mr. Judkins assured him was better than the article be had de sired, and served exactly the same purpose, or he wss made to feel that it Was, for some dark snd mysterious reason, no longer "carried" by any progressive and self-respecting shop. When a carping summer resident, whose pair of ancient bellows, bought at an auction sale, bad collapsed be yond repair, expressed surprise that no bellows were to be had of 11 r. Judkins, the Centervllle storekeeper turned upon her with a lofty smile. "Folks here, ma'am," he said, cold ly, "don't bold with getting so took up with old Ideas, or being so narrow, aa some of those that summer with us from below.. The advances of civili zation are prized here In this town, the air-tlgbts with drafts are more thought of than old chlmbly fireplaces that require constant feeding and have to be blowed on to keep 'em a-going." He glanced at tbe summer resident but could discover no special signs of weakening or humility in her face. With a briskness which always marked his mercantile proceedings, be changed In a twinkling from the advocate of progress to tbe upholder of primitive methods. "But folks will be folks, ma'am," be said. Indulgently, "and If you like an open glow I don't know what's to bin der. And better than any bellows tbat ever were mads, ma'am, Is an onion- stalk. I can fit yon out complete with three stout ones at this present and when you've blowed tbem out o' use fulness, sll you've got to do Is to come to Abel Judkins and get some more." CHANGE SECURED AT HOME. Talus of New Surroundings for an Invalid Ihowo, The doctor looked st his young pa tient with rather a dissatisfied air. "Why do yon not get well?'' be asked her, somewhat impatiently. "Your fe ver left you long ago, and you have no organic trouble, and yet yon stay just in tbe same state day after day. You will burt my reputation if you keep on in tbls way," ha added, Jokingly; but on leaving tbe room bs spoke mors seri ously. "She must be roused In some way," be said to her mother and the trained nurse who wss In attendance. "What she really needs Is a change, but sbs Is too weak tn ber present condition to travel. 1 sm going to try an experiment which will do no harm snd may do good. "I want you to let me have another bedroom for her, snd arrange It quit differently from tbs way It Is now. Uang up new cblnta curtains and put furniture tn It she Is not familiar with. A room with a fireplace. If possible. Light a bright little wood Ore, and buy ber a pretty new dressing gown. Ws will give her a radical change In bar own house and see what that will do." A couple of days afterward tbs fflti was told that she wss so much bottee that she wss going to be moved lata another room. and. despite bet reluct ance, the change was mads. The next day sbs showed languid pleasure st her pretty and novel sur roundings, ber diet wss altered, and sbe gradually acquired an appetite, la a pretty new dressing jacket, she re ceived the compliments of the doctor and nurse with complacency, and from tbat time on began to convalescs rap idly. "All going to prove," said the doctor, "tbat absolute change is often aa es sential toward recovery, and that tbs required stimulus may be given. If nec essary, at home." Even to those who are tn health the benefits of a home change should not be underrated, says the New York Trib une. "I like to get a new cook because it Is the only way we get different food." said a young married woman; but the more experienced housekeeper appreciates tbe Imperative hygienic value of change, and varies the family diet accordingly. Every woman has experienced tbs mental and even moral stimulus of a new gown (always provided tt has been paid for), but not every one recognises tbe fact that It Is tbe ssme wltb domi ciliary surroundings, snd that to occa sionally make a different arrangement of furniture Is a good thing, while small novelties In the way of new books and periodicals, a change of dress, and particularly tbe menu, all go to bright en the home atmosphere and give a tired man tbe change be really requires. The Trade of Palestine. The account of the trade of Palestine during the year 1900, given In the con sular report recently Issued, la fairly hopeful, though neither tbe exports nor the imports reach tbe level at talned In 18S9. The prosperity of tbe country depends still, ss it always bits done, and most probably always will do, upon the fruits of the earth. Cen turies before the present era, corn aud wine and oil were among the chief boons of tbe "promised land," and though we bear little now of tbe first tbe other two are regaining their an cient reputation. To melons, which also were valued In ancient days, a new fruit has been added tbe orange. This, Indeed, and tbe grape, are now tbe most Important products of Pales tine, though tbe exports of tbe former have declined considerably In value the last few years. Jaffa oranges, however, maintain tbelr reputation, so tbat It may be hoped Jhat the depres sion Is only temporary. Southern Pal estine bas always been noted for I's vineyards; it was Judab who "bound his foal to the vine and washed bla clothes in the blood of the grapes. Is tbe liion Intelligent? After prolonged experiment, M. Hachet-Souplet bas reached the con clusion that there can be no doubt that the lion is the possessor of reasoning faculties. Of course this conclusion Is based on observation, not on hypo thesis. Among the experiments was one which took place at the Museum of Natural History, within a stone-throw of the statue of Cbevreul, tbe scientist centenarian. A Hon was presented tin av.are wltb a closed box containing an appetizing piece of meat Tbe point to determine was whether. the animal would be smart enough to discover the secret open the box and secure the coveted morsel through means of bis own. The king of animals did not dis appoint the scientist who bad falto In bis judgment After hesitating a little, the lion raised the lid of tbe box wltb his nose, and although he went at It at first In tbe wrong way, be deliberately put tbe box In tbe proper position, ex actly as a man would have done. It took him exactly three minutes, and a written report of the occurrence was signed by tbe witnesses. A Pretty Broad Hint. An anecdote is told of one of tbe smaller South American republics which Illustrates tbe methods which are adopted wben It comes to a ques tion of making war. The "navy" of the particular power referred to con sists of a single, old fashioned, side wheel steamer, armed with one gun. In time of peace she Is engaged In haul ing freight np and down tbe river which runs close to tbe capital. At the outbreak of one of the periodical wars, not so very long ago, the President of tbe republic took charge of the steamer and started up stream on a recruiting expedition, leaving his senior general in charge of tbe military preparations at tbe capital. A couple of days later the steamer returned, and some sev enty miserable looking natives, each firmly bound with a strong rope, were marched off and turned over to tbe gen eral, wltb a note from tbs President which read: "Dear General: I send you herewith seventy volunteers. Please return the ropes at once." tiinall Population. Norway's population Is the smallest In Europe, compared with her area. Each of her Inhabitants could havs forty acres of land, while tbe Briton would have to be content wltb less than an acre. Fertility of Karypt's Moil. The fertility of Egypt's soil Is illus trated by a fact tbat every one of 10, 600 square miles can support 928 per sons, whereas even In densely popu lated Belgium there are only 580 to tbs square mils. Knssians in Kansas. There are 4,000 Russians In Kansas, a thousand beads of families wbo do little beyond raising wheat They vote In elections as ons man, and attend strictly to tbelr own business. It wss wben Torutnaso Bslvlul wss In tbls couutry. The play of tba eveulng wss "Othello," and the scene of Dead tuotia's deslb bad been reeched. Already the raging Moor bsd slain his Innocent victim, snd disturbed by Emilia's knock, bad let rail tbe cur talus before the couch on which tbs body lay. Tbe draperies provided, si though rich and heavy, did not come to the floor. Tbey missed It by s apse of st lesst a foot and tbls tbs deceased Pesdemona unfortunately failed to observe. Tbs sndlence, which bsd been held tense and breathless under tbs trsglo spell of ths great actor, suddenly ut tered a curious, long-drawn breath of amaaement followed by a bobbing of many beads, a universal craning or necks, snd then, to poor Salvitil's bs iriMnrmont and dismay, by a burst of downright laughter. He could perceive uothlng amlsa, and there wss notning for hlra to do but to Ignore tbs laugh ter and proceed with tbe scene. But us wonder tbe people laughedl Ths murdered Desdomona had risen and was evidently sitting on ths side of ths couch, for beneath the curtains her dangling feet were plainly seen, kicking cheerfully back and forth. Such utterly unconscious feet tbey were that the audience might not have laughed again bad tbey kept still; but sll at once they began a heel-and toe step, and people rocked back and forth trying to suppress their merriment And then swiftly the toe of tbs right foot went to the back of ths left ankls and scratched vigorously. Restraint was ended; every one et go snd laughed and laughed. From the box one could see In the entrance the outspread fingers, the hoisted shoul ders, tbe despairingly shaken beads of the Italian actors, who could find no cause for ths uproar. Salvlnl behaved perfectly in that dis turbed and distressed, be showed ns elgn of snger, but maintained his dig nity through It all, even when. In draw ing the curtains and disclosing Deads mona dead once more, the Incompre hensible laughter again broke out The Batter Karl. In old days, when kings received per gonal service from their most trusted nobles, simple offices were created, such as cup-bearer, chamberlain, but ler, which bavs descended as titles of high rank. In a more complex world the service bas been lost sight of, and only the outer circumstance and dig nity of tbe office remain. For Instance, the Duke of Norfolk, earl marshal of England, Is hereditary chief butler of tbe realm. A story of his youth, told In tba New York Times, brings Into curious rela tion the real rank of the man and bis theoretic function. When be was a young man bs wss reticent end st evening receptions used to psste himself fiat against ths wall and say nothing. On one occasion a sprightly couple came by him, cbstter Ing and wrapped up In themselves. "I wish you'd bring an Ice here," ssld the man to tbe silent black and white figure against the wall. The upright young man obeyed. As be csme back wltb the refreshments the lady noticed the ungloved hsnd tbat reached her the glass. "I don't believe that man Is s ser vant," sbe whispered. "Ask some body." Meanwhile the duke had met a friend, and with grim humor had told his experience. Tbe man wbo bad made the mistake wss Introduced ts the duke, who said: "Well, I congratulate you. You had penetration to detect the hereditary chief butler of England when bs wss In plain evening dress. There Isn't much difference between a chief butler a.id a head waiter, you know." Intelligent Squirrels. A party of young people, wbo In last summer's holiday journeyed through tbe country gypsy-ltke in a caravan, witnessed in a grove near a glen tbs following Incident which seems to show a friendly understanding among squirrels: An al fresco dinner had just been finished and tbe party were still sitting st tbe table, when a red squirrel, with glistening, eager eyes, came creeping down s tree which stood nesr the ta ble. He crept nearer and nearer, and finally leaped upon tbe table. Tbe lady who was presiding ssld: "Yes, help yourself to anything you wsntr Upon this Invitation the little fellow made bold to creep up to a loaf of bread from which only a slice or two bad been cut He seized It and dragged it to tbe side of the tsble, and somehow managed to scramble down tbs slds with It to the ground. He then fixed his teeth In the crust, and dragged It away and down the steep sides of tbe glen. But when be reached the bottom and confronted ths rise on tbe other side, It wss too much for blm. Then be gsvs a sort of call, which seemed to be un derstood, for soon squirrels were seen coming from several directions. Tbey crowded round blm, and after a little conference all took bold, .and with a tug and strain tbey managed to bring tbe loaf to tbe top of the hill. Tben they disappeared with It In the woods beyond. Family Jjerald. Pleased with His Joke.
