Pittsburg SEPTEMBER 27, 1901. HGADfeiD FOR NEUALEM. The announcements which come with in the last few days from a reliable source that actual work of conatrncting the Northern Pacific's branch road from Scappoose to Pittsburg is to be started by October 15th, is hailed with a degree of satisfaction which scarcely knows no bounds by the people of this county, es pecially the residents of Mehalem val ley, whose fond hopes have been so often blighted that the idea of ever experienc ing such a happy state of affairs was re garded almost as an evidence of ap proaching insanity. But the realistic seems now to have emerged from the fantasy, swelling the bosoms of the in habitants of that valley with thrill of emotion. The vital interests are touched to a degree of wonderful extent. Not withstanding the fact that continuously since last March there has been plenty of evidence at hand that some such move was not far off, yet the people feared to hope. Thousands of dollars have been expended by the company on the preliminaries for this daily expected stage of the work, however, for three or four months the movements of the sur veyors in Nehalem have been surrounded by mnch mystery. It is not reasonable to presume that the road will not be built, or that it will atop at Pittsburg. The traffic to be built ap between Scap poose and Pittsburg would not jnstify any eompauT in the expenditure. There is something beyond at which the North ern is aiming. Below and above Pittsburg are vast stores of wealth in the undeveloped nat ural resources. It undoubtedly is the aim of the company to penetrate the vast forests of Columbia, Clatsop and Tillamook counties, ultimately tapping the coal deposits near the coast, and af fording means of transportation for the products of Tillamook county aside from its timber, which is computed to be of almost 'untold wealth. The entire country south and west of the Columbia river, as far south as Yaquina, abounds in wealth, but of no practical value until transportation is provided, and the com pany that provides this great necessity will reap its reward in an immense traf fic in latter days. In (act, the whole distance from Scappoose to the coast is region, w'lich, when developed by the advent of a' railroad, will respond quickly to the call made npon its capabilities to provide tonnage sufficient to justify the necessary outlay to construct the road. From all appearances the road will be bnilt, and that at once. Contractors bave already visited the scences where the moat expensive part of the construc tion is to start, in response .to the re quest of the company. It is not unreas onable to expect that inside of a month there will be great activity all along the line from Scappoose to Pittsburg. Tux headlines over the dispatches Tuesday morning announced to the World that Leon Czolgoss bad pleaded guilty to the charge of murder in the first degree, "but the presiding judge ordered that the plea be recordered "not guilty." Under the laws of New York when a plea of "guilty" to such a charge is made the criminal can be sentenced only to life imprisonment, therefore the plea of "not guilty" was ordered entered so the case could proceed to trial, that the man might get what he justly deserves a death sentence, which the jury returned into court after a few moments deliberation. The indication now are that Czolgoss will be put out of the way very soon. CANNOT OWN LAND. Under the reign of socialism no man can own, in tee simple, a single square foot of lend. The platform of the social ist party inveigs very strongly against the private ownership of the means of production and distribution, by declar ing that the aim of the party is to con quer the power of government and then to nse these powers to transform the present system of private owershlp of production into collective ownership by tbe entire people. It I cardinal faith with socialists that competition it to be exterminated. Hav ing these facts before u w are prepared to say without hesitation that bo farmer can afford to be a socialist. His owner ship in land is to be "transformed" into collective ownership by the entire peo ple. I the farmer ready to bave bis arm npon which be has bestowed so much hard labor And expended so much liard-earned money "transformed" from liis possession and given over to the pos session ot the entire people T There would be a very vigorous remonstrance I against cliaiiKing him from thsowner in I f0e simple to the more tonanton his own I ' I .L-. 1... .! Ur mJUie mui'r ini ui vu. ia ,a,j vjvv... , transformed." Ho when the farmer j ha anything to eell (and all enterprising farmer nearly always have) he wants competition among purchasers. Hence he can never endorse the doctrine of "Jeath to competition" so urgently pressed to the front by socialist. Extreme in political policies are al- ways dangerous. The counterpart of the e xtremes ot truism and imperialism on the one hand is to be found in the ex treme of socialism on the other hand. Both are likewise dangeiou to the weal of tit's country. Here every American should keep in the middle of the road. PuBimKtT RooHtvitLT assures Bimrer Hermann that he intends visitineOreeon and Wnahinirtnn next nm-inff. We can't scarce out any Mountian lions for the president to take whirl at, but we can take him to Eastern Oregon, where he could get in on some ot the benefits of the scalp bounty law.. What a display ot cowardice, how un faithful to hi own faith, and what a dis- play of depravity was exhibited by the assassin of President McKinley. "Don't i... .v. i u v.. ,,. ..- iuw. u..., ..-v.. ficers taking him to police headquarters. Of all the cravens on earth, the anarch- ist murderers are the basest. The wretch t wflVl .nl-l w Wei taction the moment his own safety was in peril. .... rr r Thb census report just received shows the death rate in Oregon to be a little less than ten per cent, about the lowest of any state in the United States. The svarsM ft-. 1ia rAtaMMintr m tnnrnr im.telyl0 per cent. Portland is about the average of the state and probably of the other cities in the state 9.5 per cent, Both San Francisco and Los Angeles are nsrntnt Kan Truui ia 94 nor cent per cent. Thb Gray's Harbor Gazette is in the midst of a hotbed of anarchy, lament able as the condition is, and its outspoken course may ring its death knell while it is calling forth praise from another source. The paper says: "we bave It from a reliable source that there are two hundred men .in this county sending money to Patterson, N. J., to aid in the anarchistic organizations of this country, The usual fee is $2 a head. We can give the name of the man the money is sent to, and may bave more to say about it in the future." Look out, Mr. Gazette; if they're as plentiful as all that, your case may be attended to by them. tha v.n. I ' . ,r " "7 , " " -6u"'. wuu.j, Mm, I ing it entirely free from debt. 60 far as I known this is the only county in the West in this condition." The latter part of this item is what chafes. Columbia county is "in this condition," and don't you forget it, Brother Campbell. Your I county of Lane would do well to emulate Columbia's example, and slough off xoU,uuu or ?s,ooo of its unnecessary In- debtedneea. We stand at the head of the class, down here, thank you, and the county treasurer is paying all war rants upon presentation. Go wise np on things in general, brother. Gaxvbstoh has had a great business year in spite of the calamity of Septem ber, 1900. Its cotton receipts bave been 467,720 bales greater than they were last year, and its bank clearances increased from $339,000,000 to $360,000,000. In its commerce, generally, Galveston has gone ahead of its former figures, regardless of a hurricane that in a city of less vitality might have been an overwhelming blow. But the chief port of Texas and the Southwest recuperated with wonderful rapidity. More than one-fourth of the cotton crop of the country passed through that port thi season. Galveston has j ,,., 5,. ... .. . Iv. lu -ur, -nu As Oregon newspaper says the law of this state providing for the payment of county money lor coyote scalps 1 "an infamous measure." If this charge is true then the further allegation that the author ot the bill does not deserve the support of the valley voters for any po sition is fully justified. It would also be true that every member of the legis lature who voted for the bill enacting this law is unworthy of the support of me voters 01 any part of the state for any office. Any legislator who would vote for an infamous measure should be shunned by hi fellow-men. Of course, the paper which made this statement did not mean wbat it said. It probably know that law of the scalp bounty act are common in nearly all civilized countries. We believe there are feature of this law wbieh deserve criticism, and there may be differences of opinion as to the advisability of such legislation, but it is wrong to denounce any such law a r, j. ., ,, infamou. It is one of innumerable similar charge which tend to destroy respect for law and confidence in our government' RELY ON YOURSELF. The man who ne bis own judgment, who draw hi own conclusions, based upon study and consideration and anal ysis generally succeeds. Deliver as from the person who swallow all that i told him, be it good, bad or indifferent. Such a person is an injury to his neighbor as well as himself. His judgment is diffi cult. Like an nnused muscle, he likes strength, precision, solidity. He is not to be relied npon in times of danger, when quick, decisive action is called for. It is the man of sound judgment, the man of self-reliance who is looked to to rescue tbe perishing, and who proves himself a hero. It is not the man who wants to see what hia neighbors are go ing to do, and asks what hi neighbor think about it who prove himself a Glbralter when the waves of adversity dash agalimt him. Mr. McKinlev's assassination was due entirely to the leniency and indulgence of this government. It may, with truth, be said that we bave toeterea anarcny within our door. Free speech, the ntrht to think and act as we please. has always been the basic principles ot this government. But there is also a great law, the law of self preservation, which must be taken into consideration, And in this, the first law of nature, must be found the death sentence of anarchy. This element of people has been encour aged, they have become bold, and no longer attempt to place secrecy on ineir meetings or on their utterances. Ana, as everv doctrine, no matter how damn has found supporters and grown strong and denant. There is but one course for this gov ernment to pursue. A war of externa nation must be begun. Anarchists want war : let them have it. They want mur der; let there be murder. Let the war be to the death, and let the fittest sur vive. Once for all let us rid ourselves of anarchy.
