OREGON MIST Entered at the l'oetoffioe at St. H lens, Oregon, as second-class mail matter. COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPCH. Issued Evkby Fhiday Mousing By DAVID DAVIS, Editou AND PboI'KIRTOR. SUBSCRIPTION PRICK: One copy on year, in advance. ; Six mouths Thfrh is considerable disappointment manifested at different localities in the county because the county court failed at its Inst session to purchase a rock crusher. These manifestations of dis upproval will not be of a serious or last ing nature. The practicability of pnr clinging a crusher is being carefully and deliberately weighed by the mem tiers of the court, and the plan lias not been wholly abandoned by any means.becanse the court readily understands that the plan bears too much of merit to be passed by with a wink and a nod. The matter is only temporanlv delayed in Kore Ballroad Talk. Following upon the heels of the an nouncement in the Oregonian that A. B. Hammond has purchased a largo tract 01 umuer lima in Tillamook county, tlitis greatly increasing his at ready large holdings west of the Coast range, cnme the following dispatch from cwiem to mat paper! It is prophesied on the streets mat a raiiroau will De omit irom Hie Tillamook country to connect with the Corvallis A Kustern, which ,now extends from Detroit, in the Cascade Diountaina, to Vaquina. There has been at frequent intervals talk of an extension of the Corvallis & Eastern across the Cascade mountains, and through Eastern Oregon to a connection with some transconti nental line. This would open up a vast area of land in Eastern Oregon, now used only for grazing purposes, and would provide a more direct route for the lumber manufactured along the line of the Corvallis A Eastern, this side of the Cascades. A railroad down the coast from the Nehalem to Yaqnina would reach large areas of timber land. such as that in the Silets country, and would develop the dairying industry in the good pasturage reirioii on the west stops oi tne uoast range, one oi tne remote possibilities surcested bv Salem people is that a railroad might be built irom xuiamuoc across tne uoast range, through the Grand Bonds pass and through Salem to a connection with the Corvallis & Eastern, near Stayton." ASSAULTED THE PRESIDENT. To tell our readers that an attempt was made to assassinate President Mc Kinley last Friday would be a useless statement of a fact which is undoubt edly known to every person in the United States. Leon Cxolgosx, Rus sian anarchist, committed the villainous act at the Buffalo exposition, the intelli gence of which cast a gloom of sadness over the entire country, and indeed, do more shocked and horrified were the American people at the fiendish act than were the civilized nations beyond the seas, an evidence of which was the long list or sympathetic and condoling mes sages from the heads of ail European governments, both great and small. The shocking incident recalls vividly to mind the assassination of two other great and grand American presidents, Abraham Lincoln and James A. Gar field, the former falling a victim to the unerring aim of the fanatical Booth, at Ford's theater, in Washington, April 14, 1865, the latter receiving his fatal wounds while in waiting at the Wash ington railway station, at the hands of the desperate Goiteaa, July 2, 1881. While we recall with horror Lincoln's assassination, which was but the culmi nation of an idle brain frenzied by the blasted hopes of the confederacy, Gar field's assassination was the outcome of the same sort of mind and one of the fiercest factional fights in our political history. The situation at the attempt on nr. McKanley's life differs entirely from that -of the Lincoln and Garfield tragedies. Mr. McKinley was most uni versally popular of all our presidents. The prosperity connected with his ad ministration, his splendid conduct of the Spanish-American wsr, and hie beautiful domestic life are the reasons why he has secured such a strong bold upon the affections of the American people. This country has long needed a radi cal change in its immigration laws, and we trust the event of last Friday will hasten this desired reformation. Amer ica has been made the dumping ground for the vicious, anarchistic foreign ele ment too long. It is time to adopt stringent legislation and rules along these lines, then a determined repres sion oi au organizations with a sem blance of unlawful purpose. This would pit an end to anarchy and its attendant evils. While the nation deplores the fact that its chief magistrate has been laid nearly at death's door, its people are corre spondingly happy to know that the recovery of the wounded executive is now an assured fact. Yesterday's dis patches state this much positively. The bullet holes in the patient's stomach are healed and be has been changed to a new bed, and ia taking nourishment and relishing it. The bullet which lodged in the president's back will not be removed, but will accompany him to his grave. Let the people rejoice that the affair has no more serious termina tion. ." its merits. The clamor for better high ways is more universal now than ever before, and we entertain the most im plicit coutidenee in the court to do its full duty ' i supply ways and means ac cording to its ability. This confidence will not prove misplaced, we are sure. to no greater extent than was the confl- ilen e reposed in that body to carefully administer county matters of every char acter in the past, which every resident of the county knows has been successful to a most pleasing degree. . The court will act wisely and judiciously in this matter, it can be depended, when that uuuv leeis mat me umi nas mrriveii to act, which, there seems to be but Blight reason to doubt, is not tar in tne future. Thicks ought to be a law prohibiting tne mauuiMcturo and use ot tne . rine. it's oi no practical value to Buy one. A person who needs a gun at all needs a good one. A "22" is ueunllv fonnd in the hands of bovs, who, by all the rights of laws, and for the protec tion of society, ouifht not to iiave a sun oi any xinu. There is no small truth In the remark that a home-grown, hand-spanked, bare footed, hard-tistod country boy makes a much better fighter in the battles of life than does the pampered, high-collared youth of our towns and villages whose clothes have been dustud with a whisk broom instead of a shingle. It don't seem to make much dilTcrcnco what regiment or company he is lighting in either. It is doubtful if the total will exceed $15,000,000 where 25,000,000 was looked for. It seems that last year was the banner year for that dist rict. There is nothing surprising in the rapid exhaustion of the cream of the placer deposits. It is simply another instance of what haa happened in everv other placer camp in the world.
