Pobtlaxd's newspaper men have at last sounded the true keynote to the Nehalem railroad situation and seem to have come to a realisation of the fact that it is Portland's duty an well aa her advantage to take the loud in the devel opment of her tributary commerce, es pecially that of the Nehalem valley, a district which with a little asu-ii-t nice would quickly leapoud with a volume of busineaa that would astonish even pathetic Portland. If Pnrtlatul in Liw tn irntNl) this fart other cities have not been blind to it, ilalrM.t welMwl.iHNl ni.,Ten,etit is on foot in New York bv which the! products of tins part ol Western ureguu would be diverted to an atern market and loat to Portland altogether. Thg editor of the Oregon ian on May 1st, after auiuuiariiiiig the situation, very correctly remarks f "It is prepos terous that so rich a region lying so near our very door should lie drained away off to foreign parts to the imuieasorabfe detriment of this city aud the country to be developed ; but this is likely to be done if present appearance are not de ceptive. An independent line between Portland and Nehalem and Tillamook bays is what Portland needs and etiould have. This would encourage the devel opment of the vast native resources of that richest quarter of Oregon, and it i only business logic that it trade should flow this way." The foregoing it an exact statement of the situation as it appears to any lair minded observer. The great and varied resources of the N'ehalem country are directly tributary to Portlantl aud are that city's natural legacy. It they were developed by that city and diverted into her trade marts they would quickly prove one of Portland's most valuable commercial resources. Portland can neither permit the resources of that dis trict to lie dormant, or be diverted to other channels and in order to insure her supremacy there she must act iode pendenty and quickly. All of these things have for years lieen earnestly Urged upon Portland and the wonder is tiiat that city baa been so long in awak ening to the importance of these facts. If the building of a railroad to the Nelialem eon n try were matter of eiich financial magnitude that it could not be couipaaeed by the people of Portland, their apathy in the matter could be ex cused for natural reasons, but such is not the ease. A railroad to N'ehalem can be built and equipped for 3,0O0,O00 a mere bagatelle, and a snm which can be drawn out of the legitimate chan nels of its trade without any danger or inconvenience whatever. ow that Portland plainly sees her duty let her perform it withont hesitation or delay. Thc South is beginning to find ont that an expansion president is not such a bad fellow, after all. It is not expected that Mr. Bradley's corner on whisky will keep that com modity from going down regularly. Chicago is said to be a city in which it it unprofitable to keep a cow. The reason given being that it costs $25,U0U lor a uiue L-ua-a-nay. Th name which hat been chosen for the 1906 exposition is both expressive and convenient, and we doubt if a more appropriate one could have been chosen Wuck Emperor William takes a trip the people cheer him because tliev have to, but when President William lakes a trip the people cheer him because thev like to. A mas named Bradley has "cornered" 20,000,000 gallons of whUky ami Mured it away in a cellar in New York. Doesn't this explain the reason why Mrs. Nation is kept carefully locked np in a Kansas jail? In March the British loss in South Africa was 466 men killed and wounded. 3 captured, 428 died from disease and SUU9 sent home as invalids. The coet of the war is still at the rate of nearly 60,000 men a year. Authentic information has been re ceived at the state department in Wash ington, to the effect that one million Chinese have been killed since the war commenced in China. If this lick is kept np much longer there will be no body left to "civiliee" over there except the "Christian" armv, which went over there to correct the degenerate heathen. Thc big fair which the people of Ore gon propose to give in 1905, lias been n.ni.;...,.!. ) An.t I II.. Retting under way. It is now np to the! lUonlJ T.nH r rasen i ,L ' should constitute himself a committee of one and get a hustle on and assist in making it a success. Here is an oppor tunity to thow the world that we can do just at big things oat here in Oregon s the people of any state in the union can do, and that we can do them just as gracefully and well. Thc railroad fever aeeins to be absorb ing the attention of Portland's business men to the exclusion of every other con sideration except the big exposition. This is very commendable spirit in many respects, but it is especially it-rati fying to many of us because of its tend- knev toward the develooment of Port, ' l.nJ. ilu.i. .l,:.u i. I JVrt A Id rids is contlnei to the house ; . frmm limif tffiillil.. suffering from lung trouble N. Merrill expects to etart np his mill to rut door stock again this season. I Mias Hattie Kelty left town Monday I morning to reside for a time, at least, iu Portland. Mias Laura Nichols was over from Kugle Cliff spending Sunday with friends here. Flippin is netting his manufactured lumber to town as last as the condition of the roads mill permit. Mrs. Riclr, of Kaiuier, Sient a couple of days witn her parents, 1. Dixon and wife, returning Tuesday morning. James K. Van and son, Nathan, who are now employed at Young's camp, near Rainier, were home over Sunday. George Miller spent two or three days in Portland visiting his wife, who is at present an inmate of the hospital there. We understand that the intention to rebaild the Tichenor mill farther np Went creek has been abandoned for the present. Dr. Hall and family spent a day last week iu Portland, where the doctor went to be present at some surgical work in which he felt interested. Miss Maud lirvant came home from j her echool in the Nehalem valley las I week and took a brief trip to Port. mid last She was back to school ou duty Monday morning. Geo. Perrine entertained his brother from North Yamhill last week. His visit was largely induced too, by his desire to vii-it his sister, Mrs. Baker, at Mist, who has been ill for some weeks. So energetic a boy as Kit Conyeis it missed from the streets when he fails to put in an appearance. It is measles that make him look like a Hottentot for a brief period and make the boys miss Ins cheerful companionship lor the present. Strains of mucic and merry laughter from Con vers' hall at a rather late hour ou Monday evening were explained by a passer by the statement that the Ar t leans were having a blow out, whatever that may indicate. It seemed an enjoy able "'jlow" at leaat. The dance tf the Red Men brought a good inauy people to Graham's hall ou Saturday evening, where they spent a few hours in the fascinating muscular exercise peculiar to such an occasion. Aa a benefit we are not advised of its success, bat it is probable the treasury is somewhat replenished in consequence. Mii-8 Mabel Blackford is a recruit in the ranks of public school teachers. She passed a creditable examination re cently, secured a temporary certificate and is now in charge of the school in district No. M. She is another of the Ciatakanie graduates to enter the work and will, we predict, do good work as an instructor. Daniel Dixon, sr. announces his inten tion of selling bis ranch with stock and a variety of farm implements, and retir ing from the business. He feels that the weight of the nearly four score years upon himself and wife forbid their doing very active work, hence his desire to resign the duties to some younger person. Ike Bumgardner has had rather bad luck during the past few months in ill ness of himself and family, and since his return here, his wife developed such indications of typhoid fever as to induce him to take her to a hospital in Port land for care and treatment. At last reports she seemed destined to have to wrevtle with the disease. Dan Guinan is a good waterman when engaged in boating and gill net fishing, but when it comes to keeping on the npper side of a rolling log in the water, Daniel's training does not serve luiu so well, and a plunge in the Clatskanie river Tuesday morning convinced those who saw and enjoyed it (more than he did) that he had something yet to learn. Dan was very much disgusted and got very wet. ' A match team of large, fine looking draught horns attracts considerable at tention about here now, where such horses are not plenty enough to supply j the demand from the logging camps, 1 and upon the arrival of such a team last week it was learned that Chandler and I Sutherland had made an investment in that line with a view to logging opera tions the cominir summer. Thev ex ner t ! to operate near town, and have an out- K t. ....I .U The people along the river are exper-1 leucine a touch of the benefit of low I fares. The Gatzert has been taken off i the Portland-Astoria run and pnton the npper Columbia, and the boat attempt ing to take her place does so only in the saying, not in the doing. Mail is de livered at the pleasure of the carrier, not for the convenience of the public. When the fares are placed at such a figure to warrant a good steamer to tro on the route again there will be a better service supplied. Miss Winnie Way, of Portland, who is visiting friends in this place, was tendered a very pleasant dancing party by her young lady friends Tuesday even ing. About fifteen couples were present and the festivities continued till mid night when a lilit lunch was served after which the guests departed, voting the event one of the pleasantest ever enjoy ed in this citv.
