A SENTENCE OP FIVE TEARS for AJUhfl'ti Vi UaMsViaVAVj' .aLslW. iUJMva) Attempt to Kape, 90,000 Verdict In Damage Salt--, One Criminal Caae Held Over Other Court Mattswe. MHnley Lane is now an Inmate of the Oregon penitentiary, there to remain five years, so decreed by Judge McBrido, who denied the motion for a new trial, and sentenced the prisoner Monday forenoon. Ijine had been in jnil almost a year, pending the outcome of his trial, and his sentence of five yean makes the penalty for his act! severe enough to serve as a substantial warning to man kind not to take undue liberties. This trial has been s weary, expensive affair, not calculated in the least to re flect credit upon the County nor the community in which the crime was committed. The sooner the affair can be forgotten the better it will be for all concerned. Lane Is a young man, and upon his release he certainly will be wiser and convinced that "the wages of sin is death." He was taken to bulem Tuesday night. A SSOOO VERDICT. Outcome of Damage Butt Against Htar Logging Company. The damage suit of fHirtia Bowers against the Star Logging Company for fzO.UOU, brought to recover for the loss of an arm while in the defendant's em ploy, and which occupied three daya of the Court's attention last week, resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff of 15000. The case wm a hard legal contest throughout, and upon the rendering of the verdict by the jury counsel for the defense asked for the privilege of filing a motion for a new trial. The Court al lowed twenty days in which to file the motion. T. J. Cleeton and St. Rayner & Clark were counsel for the plaintiff. Attorney Minor, of Portland, and Messrs. Dillurd & Day, of this city, appeared for the defendant. Taken Under Advisement. The attention of the Court waa occu pied Monday in hearing the rase of the Bute aeainst John It. Ferrell for aasault and battery on the person of Ah Wing, utitnauian. Tne lurv returned a ver dict of guilty as charged in the com plaint, me evidence snowed tins case to be a very aggravated one, which the jury certainly believed to bo so, since its verdict was returned after short de liberation. The penalty for the offense is a fine of not less tiian (60 nor more than t&K) and imprisonment in the County jail for one year. Sentence was suspended, however, awaiting; the intro duction of further testimony, probably as a leniency oi the uourt. (Sentence will be pronounced today. Peter Stewart tn Custody. As soon as the election is over, Mr. Brvun will be given a job as weather forecaster at Astoria. Ins prognostica tions are so unreliable that it is pre sumed that he would make a good weather prophet. As he will be out ot a job after the 6th of November and the silver mine owners will put np no more money for him, he will have to be taken care of. One objection to. hie coming to Astoria is that if the County Court finds it out they may allow him (10 a month.
