OREGON MIST Entered J the Postofllce at St. Helens, Oregon, as second-class mail mutter. COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. I8i:kd Evekv Friday Morning By DAVID DAVIS, Enimn ani Froi'riktor, hunting work, they are hunted up by ' men who have work to do. ritill there 1 are in the aggregate a large number of tramps yet, and some of them are no j doubt so liecause of this very experience I of iinstiocoswfully hunting for work, i They discovered that thev could manage to exist without work ; they eaw others ' doing so; thev became inured to few and : ! irregular meals, to begging and bum ming; and so innny who liau no great store of ambition or self-respect became tramps from choice, or through associ ation with tramps. They were inocu lated with the virus of the "hard times." With the recurrence of another season of industrial depression, the One eopv one vear, in advance $1.00 country will till up with tramps again, Six months. .'. . 50 and again a portion of them will learn ' and henceforth follow the trade of a , ; tramp. Heretofore there, haa been an inexcusable destruction of valuable timber by hundreds of thoughtless, careless persons, who per haps not nii.'chevonsly, started forest tires. The fact too, that a truer sense of value of the timber is now realized by the average individual who owns a parcel of land, bus much to do with the decreased amount of suioko during the summer season. Where a few years ago timber was slashed right and "left and purposely destroyed by fire in order to clear the ground, the tree is felled and worked into cordwood or otherwise utilized to some profit before the slash ing is fired. Timber now has a com mer- " cinl value, and our people are to be con Mb. Jopitbr Plvvii'm will have to get i gratulatea upon their apparent appreci- hurry on himself if he causes the pres- j ation of this very valuable fact. We ent August to be so dreadfully disagree-j firmly believe thetime to be past when able as was August a year ago. The i our summer months are made disagree liiQnth is more than half gone and its able by the continuous) season of hot, weather record is fairly good, so much j smoky", sultry weather. Whether we bo indeed, that the wiseacres are about! are correct in our theory of cause and to predict a drouth. Hut the contrast effect, the fact remains that the condi with August a year ago is regarded asjtions do exist aa we have stated, and not a serious condition, because at that i that alone is good, time it was hope for better things, even j ' if it was deferred to the extent of uiak- To Watson was not a canidate for jng me uean sick, as me oiu proveru any otnee this year. Kepublican pros AUGUST 17, 1900. states it. But because wc are talking we do not mean to be complaining. This weather suits ua to gnat's heel. There are probably in the whole world less than 10,000 anarchists, we mean men and women who would mur der to advance their insane ideas, and till the civilized world seems powerless to stay their hand, and is indifferent to their presence unless they succeed in their terr.ble aim. It seems strange that such a body of people can exist, still they do, and they keep up an organiza tion and have a paper, and society is al ways being apprised of their presence. They have kept within bounds at Chi cago since the Haymarket tragedy and their fatal error of shooting the police; but they have within a year assassinated the Empress of Austria and Kingof Italy. The European nationB are making a mis take in driving the assassins to America, tor like the cat, they are sure to come back. perity during the past four years has Drought him a good law practice and leisure in which to write a successful book. Coxky, of Coxey army fame, is now at the head of a manufacturing plant which employs 200 men. He is now something of a capitalist and not in sympathy with tramp road pedestrians. China invented the firecracker and the kite. With all this to answer for, it is not suprisitig that the old empire should be reaping a fair-sized whirlwind. It is his connection with the cotton bale trust that causes Chairman Jones to lose sight of all the issues of the day excepting that of imperialism. If Bryan were elected President there is not a bit of doubt that he would con strue it as a proper indorsement of his 16 to 1 ideas. He would say the end had i'nstified the means by which he imposed lis will on the builders of the Democratic platform, be being indeed "wiser -than they knew." In his inaugural address he would say that the will of the people as expressed at the polls was that the gold law must go, and the policy of free silverism be ushered in. He would then proceed to impose on Congress tbe imperialistic methods by which he won in the Democratic Committee on Reso lutions at Kansas City. When Congress bad done his bidding, and free silver was accomplished, how would hum bugged Honest Money Democrats feel about their own share in the dishonest work of making present 100-cent dollars worth 42 cents? They would undoubtedly feel "like 30 cents." Whiskers are not controlling Western politics this year. The Populists have been patronizing a cupping bureau. Whkn the boys in blue march away from Che Foo, not a thing will they do to fc.wang si', Yung i.ti and An, too. Most of the charlatans and fakirs which prey upon the credulity of the public are harmless and entitled to ply their various vocations without hinder Mice, but the Christian scientists, who are neither Christian nor scientific, have lately been resposihle for the death of so many innocent persons, non-believers in their creed, that the call for some legal restrictions upon the nefar ious practices is imperative. So long as the sick and dying who believe in these arrant im posters call them in as medical advisers to themselves, no one complains except the fool-killer who is thereby de prived of his legitimate buisncss. But when the lives of little children are sac rificed by the superstitons of mentally and befuddled parents, it is time for the law to intervene. Public indignation is being aroused throughout tbe country, and the time will eoon come when a per son who calls in one of these divine (?) healers ( ?) and thereby sacrifices a hu man life through lack of proper medical attendance will be held responsible therefor in every community. Astorian. An. the historic precedents favor the re-election of President McKinley, for no President has ever run for second term, with a united partv behind him, who was not re-elected. The Presidents who have held two terms were Washing ton, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jack son, Lincoln and Grant. These were re elected either bv the whole people, as in the case of Washington and Monroe, or by an undivided party vote. The Presi dents who were defeated for a second term were John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Burcn, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, and in each case their defeat was due to dis sensions in their own party, and they were not loyally supported. The most recent instances, Harrison and Cleve land, are within the memory of every one. The farmers' quarrel with Blaine lost him many votes, while Cleveland was defeated in New York by one of the Democratic factions. P.ut there are no divisons in the Kepublican party today, j based on tbe spirit of faction or enmity to McKinley. The party stands four square to the world, presenting an nn-j broken front in every direction. The dissensionu.are in the Democratic party, not the Republican. j Wk hear little of tramps in this part of the country any more, though they are by no means extinct, says the Tele gram. That they have greatly decreased shows that a good many of tha men who were, or were cnlled trttnips a few year? ago, would really work if they found a good opportunity, or rather, vrfh many of them, if the opportunity came and hunted them up. For many a man who is willing to work and who will do good when put to it, does not know how to "rustle" for it. Three or or more, the supply of labor was greater than tbe demand, and the country was filled up with tramps. For the past three years the demand for labor of all kinds has been strong mid fully equal to the supply; a good many of the tramps who would not find a job, espe cially those who did not know how to hunt one up, are at work. Instead of A Fitting Testimonial. Dear Doctor McKinley: Four years ago I had that idle feeling and a craving for food in my stomach that I could not seem to fill for the want of something to eat. In tact my entire lamuy Buttered from the same complaint. I had severe pains in my back from carrying the mortgage on my home. My condition was such that my friends hardly knew me, I looked so much like a tramp. Then hearing of your prosperity Remedy, I tried it, and today I am a changed man. I am glad to say that all my "Hard Times Paine" have" left me. We could not get along without your prosperity Remedy in my family, "and we snail continue to use the same. Your obedient servant, American Workman. From "Judge." Same Old Story. J. Mortimer Brown, editor of the White Lake, S. D.) Wave, summarizes one end of the political situation in the following comprehensive way: You bet. Same old ticket, Same old boss; Same old platform (Minus cross) ; Same old powder, Same old gun ; Same old waddeu' ('steen to one) ; Same old kickers. Same old growl ; " Same old anti- Hanna holw; Same old issues Nothing new; Same old lies Xa Help 'em through; Same old talkers, Same old josh ; Same old brand of Campaign slosh ; Same old voters (Bless their souls), Same old licking At the polls i ! A Few Things Worth Knowing White clothing that has been dis colored from red calico or from streaks that are often found on napkins or towels, and by mistake have been washed with tlie white goods, mm be renovated by soaking a few days in but termilk. Cloth that lias turned yellow from long standing also may be whitened in the game manner. Babies are always troubled about walking when new shoes are first put on them. This may be overcome by scratching the soles with any blunt instrument. When cows have been eating wild onions the odor may lie somewhat re moved by placing a small lump of salt peter, about as large as a pea. in the cream can, while getting a churning. A paper pail or tub may be mended by first pasting a piece of cloth over the hole on the inside and then filling the hole with putty and letting it harden. The stains may be removed from dis colored eggs by soaking a short time in vinegar and then washing them. 1HIYAV8 I'HKDICTIONS. "If McKinley and the Republican partv are successful and put in power for the next four years, wages will be decreased. Hard times will come upon us and over the land. The price of wheat will go down and the price of gold will go up. Mortgages on our homes will be foreclosed by the money lenders. Shops and factories will close. We will export no goods and wo will import from foreign lands nil the goods we. use. Thus will ruin, want and misery be with us." William Jennings Bryan in 1S0G. We will not say that William was a liar. He was not. William was In earnest when he made that prediction in 1800. He really meant it. William labored under the impression that he had been gifted from on high with superior wisdom and that his wis dom was without a flaw. He even came to think, wo believe, that he had the divine gift of prophecy like unto the ancient Hebrew seers, who scattered ashes on their heads and then went out to toll what was going to happen in the land of Israel mid surrounding neigh borhoods. We have never believed that William was an intentional fraud. We think that he was in. dead earnest and thought he knew what he was talk ing about. But then he didn't. So fur as practical results are con cerned, William might as well have been the rankest fakir that ever mounted a goods box and sold nostrums to a deluded crowd, making them be lieve they were afflicted with ailments that he alone could cure. The difference between William and the fakir is this. The fakir knows that that he is a fraud. Ho lies deliberately and with the purpose to deceive the multitude. He knows that he has no medicine that will do the people who listen to him any good, neither does he give a cent. With William it was different. He believed what he said. He was simply making marks in a vigorous manner through bis chapeau. Not a single prediction that William made in ISOti has come true. And yet William was nominated at Kansas City n, few days ago. He accepted the nomination and will not even own np that he didn't know what he was talking about in 189H. He w ill not make the same predic tions perhaps, but he will not apologize for the ones he made four years ago. He will also make another lot of predic tions about what will happen if MeKin ley is re elected that will have no more sense in them than the predictions he made four years ago. In the faie of the record, the fact that William will go before the people again and muke another lot of predictions, shows that he is possessed of more gall than almost any other man in public life at this writing. Mail and Breeze. Only a Few Maxims. The good man loves all men, he loves to speak with a'l. The mean man sows that he himself may reap. Deal with evil as with disease, the ob ject of punishment is to make an end of punishing. Have no companionship with a man who injures his neighbor. One forgives everything to him who forgives himself nothing. Not to correct our fauits is to commit new ones. The man who in the presence of gain thinks of righteousness, who in the pres ence of danger is ready togive up his life, who never forgets a promise, is a com plete man. The disease of men is neglecting to weed their own fields and busying them selves with weeding the fields of others. Never allow yourself to do a wrong thing because it seems trifling, nor to neglect doing a good thing because it is small. In good transacting business bo faith ful in speeeli witn menus, be not envious, and in daily conduct be dignified, refined. When you know a thing maintain that you know it ; when you do not know it, admit the fact that is wisdom. The path of duty is near, yet men seek it far off. Go home and seek it and you will not lack teachers. III. 10. 11100. THAT Al.l, I COUNTY TREASURER'S NOTICE Cucntv TatAsiiHRH's orrica, 8T. If the allies will start in and kill off 1,000,000 Chiimuen for 100 veitrs, there will only be 1,000,000,000 Chinamen, approximately speaking, left to deai witn at the beginning ot the next cen tury. Or, if the normal increase of Chinamen continues, and the allies kill off 14,000,000 of them a year, or aliout 38.032 a day, it will only take 100 years to exterminate them. If the number of shots fired in past wars is used as a basis of calculation, 1,400,000,000 rounds of ammunition would be required, which, at 2l4 cents each, would onlv cost the allied Nations of the earth the small sum of $35,000,000,000. There would, of course, be a few other minor items of expense attendant upon such a campaign. New Orleans Times-Democrat. Too often, alas, the evil is enhanced by the fact thiit the food is innutritiotis, badly cooked and clogging in itself. This is one species of slow suicide, causing a long train of evils which are usually attributed to overwork. Now, it were better to go without food than to take it under these conditions. Your dog knows better than to eat when he is tired, and if you wilt watch him you will notice that he is always reluctant to be enticed into play after eating. Left to himself he will take a nap, or at least drop care for awhile awl rest. Humanity might raise its standard of progress by following the example set by the instincts of the brute creatures.
