The man who tries to drown his trou bles, always seems to think that they are located in his stomach. Trk intimation that Texas is likelv to be carried for McKinley this year" was Erobably given out by some of the local euiocratic leaders who want to get into early- communication with the treasurer of the national committee. Thk courts of Tenneesee will not li cense women lawyers to practice before 1 81taa'loa them. It is now more apparent than ever that a woman cannot reach her pistol pocket quick enough to obtain any looting in a southern court. At the present time the United States has more war-ship toonnage nnder con struction than ever in the history of the country in time ot peace, ine new ves sels building or authorized include sev enty of all classes, twelve of which are battle-ships, six armored cruisers, nine protected cruisers, four monitors, sixteen torpedo-boat destroyers, fifteen torpedo boats, seven submarine gunboats and one lake gunboat. Now the world is warned aprainst the 'microbe that infests the door knob. The danger is said to be just about as great as from handling greenbacks or silver, or shaking hands with a neighbor. The in formation is given out that when taking bold of a door-knob or bell-handle one is , JiaJale to infection with measles, mumps, itch, lockjaw, appendicitis, and whatnot. Jt is evident that man has mighty small uow ior nis ine, in tne miastoi so mucn scjetmc discovery. Tue plague of cutworms now devasta ting growing vegetation, is a matter for alarm and most creful attention. From all over the State comes the same story of destruction. Even the meadows of wild hay are infested and lowland farm ers now fear the entire destruction of the crop. This being the first visitation of the pestilence, farmers are unpre pared in a knowledge of how to suci-ess-fuliy combat and exterminate it. The worms seem to come forth from the ground bv millions, working almost entirely by night. The mildness ol the last winter is charged with being re- Sjionible for the presence of these worms, but how logical such an idea mav be is yet quite indefinite. At all events the demands careful Attention. Journal rea.l aiut aLWrovtHt. The Light A Water Company threatens a law suit, just for a little excitement and incidentally to euueavor to iorce tne city to uve up to a contract, which it alleges exists, regard ing a monthly stipend of $15 for fire protection. There are all sorts of wild rumors current regarding the matter, the water Company claiming one thing and the City Dads as vigorously deny ing the allegations. Written contracts are said to exist to substantiate certain claims, but the courts will likely be resorted to in order to try out the dif ference of opinion. Thx Astorian says the result of the convass of the Census Enumerators in Clatsop County has been forwarded to Washington, and that the returns show that Astoria has a population of be tween 800Q and 10,000. Good enough! But if we were a reeident of Astoria we would shake hands with ourself for the next year over the splendid facilities afforded for being supplied with such exasperatingly definite information. The returns of the enumeration in Co lumbia County may not have been sent j in yet. but when thev are we'll wafer u 1 silk tile against a Cuban Blossom cigar that the figures will show Columbia County to have a popplation of between 1000 and 15,000. Th Republican National Convention presents a ticket that suits the times and the party. ' It is a wedding of war heros McKinely of the war room of the wnite House, and Kooeeveltof the rough horse in Cuba. Here you have action, and acquisition personified, fit combina tion for a period of expansion and pros perity. When it was settled that it was to be Roosevelt, after ail, what did the band do but plav "There'll Be a Hot Time in theOMTown Tonight!" What a prophecy of the frolicsome days before nsl Dear old Teddy of the khaki and the top boots and the wide brimmed hat, and all that! What a carnival of nick names and noise his enndidacv imnlies. and what high old times are in store for the boys at the coming of the dashing rough rider. . Synopsis of Game Law. We have been requested to publish the game law, especially relative to birds and deer. There is too much un necessary matter iu the whole law. so we print a synopsis, which contains all the information necessary : Deer, moose and mountain sheen mav oe aiiieu irom jury to to jNovenioerl. Jacksnipe may be killed from September 1 to Feb ruary 1. Only fifteen upland birds may be killed in a day. To shooting from public highways, nor on farms without permission. Trout may be caught from April 1 to November 1, but never nnder five inches in length, and only with hook and line. Eastern brook trout introduced nm- tected for tbiee "years from spring of 1899. V 8 ALL SORTS. There's the man with the pick and the man with the hoe, and the man with the horny spade, but the man with the "ad" is the man ever glad, for he collcrs his share of the trade. There's the man with the wheel and the man with the outomobile, but the man, east or west, who in an "ad" will invest' is the man at the top of the deal. The State Supreme Court has made a ruling that the act passed by the last Legislature permitting District Attor ney8 to present informations without a grand jury being called is constitutional. This is the first time this question has been before the Supreme Court and the decision settles a question that has been raised in nearly every County in the State. A contemporary asks "Where do Por- ulistsstand?" They don't stand. Tiiey just wobble about. They wobbled from "free silver" then they "wobbled round "imperialism" and lately, they have I shown a decided inclination to wobble to I i18 10 report of appraisers of damoKes on mad anything that opposes progress. They wobbled over to the Democrats, and Democrats joined in the wobble; and lae two sets ot wooDlers are now so badv mixed up that it is impossible to dis tinguish the other from which. When Jules Verne's fictitious person age, a quarter of a century ago, went round the world in eighty days, it was thought that this was an impossible feat. It was beaten, however, a few years ago by actual persons. When JiUBsia s Siberian railroad is completed a year or two hence the trip around the giooe, Dy tana anil ocean travel, can be made in thirty-three days. It took Ma gellan's men three years to make the circuit, and Drake was about the same length of time on the way. Thus steam is making distance obsolete. It is bridg ing oceans and continents, uniting the isolated, throwing the near and remote into juxtaposition, and bringing the four corners of the globe into speaking distance of each other. Yes, the world is growing smaller. Evidences of prosperity with Mr. Bryan are not limited to the fresh paint and new porch. Newspaper stories that he has !50,000 in bonds in a safe place are ridiculed by the candidate, who says he would like to see some of them. "A healthy growth" of hia estate is ad mitted. In 1896 Mr. Bryau returned to the Assessor his occupation as a lawyer, and his taxable wealth at J270. This year he gives no occupation and lists his been steady in the past four years. In 1890 he was put down as a lawyer with no property. In 1893 he waH returned as a Congressman by profession, with an estate valued at (282. The next year showed that his property had shrunken to 200. In 1895 Mr. Bryan was a lawyer worth 340. The first year after he ran J for President Mr. Bryan returned $1486, and in 1898 his estate was taxed at $2980. It has been agreed that newspaper sub scriptions are an infallible test of a man's honesty. Tbey will sooner or later dis cover the man. If he is dishonest he will cheat the Tjrinter some way de clare he has paid when he has not- sent money in the mails "which was lost will take the paper and not pay for it on the ground that he never subscribed for it or move off and leave it coining to the otfice he left. Thousands of allewd Christians are dishonest in this, at least. ana the printers book will tell fearfu taies at tne nnai judgment. A facetious reporter for a Portland commercial agency varied the monotony of a special report on the buisness con dition and credit of a Spokane baker re recently. It was .an odd case. The man's name was Baker. He was a baker by trade, and he moved from Spokane to Baiter city, in tinner county, Urcgon This may sound queer, but it is the truth. The agent detailed to look up ,ir. isaner s stanrnng turned in a graphic account. He said: "Baker was in the baker bnisness here. He has gone to iSiiker City. He is out of dough." An exchange says that the greatest case ot aog en: aog was ot a young man who toveo to smoJte a good cigar, and an insurance company. The former bought 2000 extra fine cigars and iasured them tor their fall value, smoked them up and then demanded insurance, claim ing they had been destroyed by fire. The case was taken to court and decided in favor of the young man. Then the com pany hud the young man arrested for setting fire to his own property, and the judge ordered that he pay a fine and go to jail for three months. ,oiuted appruiMera. to meet at- the residence ol li.
