The following advice, furnished gra tuitously by the Milton Eagle, Is well worth heeding. People of this County have been taught, though at a great ex pense, what raging forest fire mean, and much care should at all time be xercised that fire should not be per mitted to spread : "Now that the time for mountain outing i fast approaching, the Eagle ha a few precautions touching camp fire which it desire to urge upon the attention of excursionists. It ia as sumed that no one wantonly seta out forest Urea and that when any such are lighted it I by accident, which knowl edge of condition and care might pre vent. A camp tire ought not to be built against the foot of a tree, especially if it 1 large and pitchy, or at the foot of any other tree, for that matter. The reason is that the trunk 1 apt to get so well lighted that the tree will burn down. The 11 ro continuing to burn long after the camper are gone I more than likely to spread and reach tho proportion of a forest conflagration. For like reasona and more, ' fire ought not to lie built against a log. It is apt to run along the trunk and net beyond the control of the campers. The open ground i the place for a lire, but before it is built the cover ing of leaves and half decayed twin should be cleared away until the bare ground Is reached. There build the lire, not on a great scale, but enough for com fort and cooking. See, when the cauip is left, that there are no tmouldering chunk remaining to be funned into a blaze by the wind or that the dry trash and rubbish i not afire. Thi some times holds fire for several days and i fanned into a forest-destroying activity when the campers are miles away. Care in the building of camp fires and their extinguishment when no longer needed will prevent all forest fires. Ktehman School Kntertalnment. The entertainment and box social given last Suturday evening at the Hteli- man school house, district Ao. lu, proved to lie a erand success. It was gotten up for the purpose of purchasing a school ball, and Mies Hatlleld, the teacher and promoter of the affair, proved berelf fully equal to the occa sion, aa a splendid programme wa ren dered, consisting of aongn, recitations, dialogues, and a flag drill, which was excellent. The lunch boxes taken bv the young ladie of the neighliorhood, were then auctioned off by Mr. L. M. Crouse, netting $19.76. Ice cream was then sold, a neat sum being realized from that source. The net proceeds for the evening were $23.75. Miss Hstlield, through her indomitable energy and perseverance, has succeeded in getting for the achool a fine flag, which was rained on the same evening with appro priate exerciaes. and with the proceeds of the entertainment, will be enabled to get the school a bell, which has been adly needed for some time. The City Council did a good act in re solving to have a fountain placed on the street, near the postomce. for the bene fit of the thirsty horses that come to our town. Thirsty men are also entitled to the benefits. Mr. and Mrs. 8. LindgreM, former res idents lately from Grant's Pass, came in the first of the week with a view to a re locution here, but found it difficult to find any vacant place to move into. The final resu't of their search for quarters is not mown. It I understood that the County Teachers' Institute is to be held in Clatskanio this year, and we learn that Monday, Septemlier 3d has been fixed upon as the opening day. Our people will lie pleased to meet and greet the instructors of our children and will doubtless try to tuake their stay pleasant. While some of the hay not wet re cently, there is some consolation in knowing that the weather lias not ma terially injured the blackberry crop. Our people have been staining their hands and tearing their clothes lately, hut the fun they had and the berries they 20t are considered an ample equiv alent when they think of the jam and prospective pics secured in air-tight jars. Frank Merrill seems to be about as husv a man as there is in town. In ad dition to his ordinary duties he is super- Intending' the city water svstem, the erection of the city fountain, the bnild- me of the city hose honne and has the care of his own tenement houses. He is both a city councilman and a school director and could fill one or two more offices if necessary. Such men do not let the grass grow under their teet. Page, who expect to make the place their home. Mrs. Mer rill purchased the Maxwell property, on the opposite corner, adjoining their home, and after placing a more perma nent foundation under tlie building, will rent it. Mr. Maxwell, after selling him self and family out of a house and home, made a purchase of s portion of the ground between Conyers' store and the buildinz occupied by "Dr. Hall, where he expects to have a building erected suit able for both omce and residence. He has already staked of the ground, cleared it of bushes and given an appearance of intention of having somethiug done at once.
