(H'fJ l- 4mKiri9tav P M E always knew when Mike wss coming; the manner of his en trance never left room for doubt. There wss always the confused murmur sf s wordy dispute with the elevstor boy downstairs who refused to operate his machine for newsboys, the quick rush of bare feet np the stsirs to the shrill se companment of "Msh Cos Black Lady," Mr. Johnson, Turn Ms Loose;" tne door would fly open with s crash snd Mike would be In the center of the room shooting "Ev'nen Journal! Lat'st wsr sews!" from a golden imagination yellow ing the already very yellow news of bis paper in a manner that most have won him aa editorship conld the proprietor of the sheet hsre hesrd him. This psrtic slsr Msy sfternoon the method of bis rntrsnce differed in no wsy from the usual routine, ssve thst the door flew spea s little more suddenly and swnng to sgain with s little louder crssh if pos sible. But once inside it was evident thst Mike wss unduly excited. The pa pers which he usually held out In front st arm's length to displsy to the best sdvsn tare their half-page scare heads were tacked securely under one arm; his big blsck eyes danced iubilsntly snd he en tirely forgot business snd the startling sews of his papers in the vastly greater importance of his own news. "Ssy, wot yer link! De ol' men's 'list ed fer s soger; he's go'a t'wsr! Ain't he a bird?" be shouted. "Whose old msnT" I inquired. "Mine! Me dadl Whose'd yer sup pose? Git de wool out o' yer t'inker!" he replied scornfully. "But, Mike, who is going to support the fsmily?" I inquired, remembering s vivid iescription Mike bsd once given me of six little Murphys of whom he wss the eld est snd only " leveo" at that. "De fam'Iy's all right. Dad ssys dat If he goes off to de scrsp de folks wot ttsys horns is boun' to tske csre uv his fam'ly. Bay, yer ought to see 'im. He's all right, ye bet! De reg'ment marches to-morrer." It wss the first time I bsd ever hesrd Mike spesk of his fsther with anything like respect. I knew him to be a drunkeu ae'er-do-well, who sbused bis wife snd children snd contributed little to their support. The dsys wore on. Regiment after regiment passed through the city rn route for the South and Mike was joy usly full of excitement. Every after soon he blew Into the office and every day his stories of the uews grew bigger snd more yellow. He followed every move of the srmy snd his Imagination ran riot with the possibilities of the world-cbsng ng arsma being enacted lews In regard to his father's regiment trss on his tongue's end. snd I soon found hat with the donning of his blue coat bis father hsd become s hero. As for Mike limself he wss the same Impudent, sharp fyed, dirty, ragged little gamin ss of rore, one of the most successful newsboys in the street, au Inveterste scrapper and rambler, and on his own confession, rare ly st night having more thsn half bis lay's esrnings to tske home. When I remonstrated with bim snd pointed ont (hst he should tske his fstber's place, he wss always ready with as ana wsr, far1 ing back on the old argument that if hit father fought for his country it wss his country s place to look after hia family. The summer wore on. The Fourth of July dswned hot snd sultry. The temper ature rose wiih the sun; st 111 o'clock it wss 80; st 11 o'clock 80 sod at noon It registered 90 in the shade. The glsre from the ssphslt streets blinded the eyes. Men panted for breath snd now snd then oas fell. The wster front snd the parka were thronged with womeu snd children seek ing relief. Those who succumbed were taken to the hospitals, but no one minded them. Down before Santiago 1U.0UO men in dingy brown canvas blue trimmed unl forms in the blistering hest ot s tropics! climate were fighting against overwhelm ing odds, Ob the day before had corns the news of s disastrous defeat, sud the night hsd closed down in gloom. To-day the detest had been turned Into a victory sad the cable hsd flashed home the details of s great navsl victory besides. The great city swelteted snd swested snd wsited for confirmation axd for the list of desd. Thst sfternoon business called me te the office. For ao hour I worked and then fell to thinking of the great tragedy being enacted. Suddenly I became aware that someone was stsnding by my desk. "Ev'nen Journal, air List ur dead and ounded." It was Mike, but I hardly recognised the voice. All the impudence, the old time braggadocio wss goue, snd he had come in so quietly. "Why, Miks " I began. Then I noticed (be trace of tears furrowed through the dirt oa the two grimy cheeks. There was sn unwonted seriousness in the deep blsck eyes snd an unmistakable quiver in the voice as he repeated, "Ev'nen Journal, sir? Extrs, jes out. Plete list uv dead an' wound ed." I snatched the paper eagerly and tossed Mike a nickel. "Never mind the change. I said, snd plunged Into the details o( the fight, V hen I glanced op Mike waa still there. "If yer plesse, sir," he began, stsnding on one leg snd uneasily rubbing it with the dirty brown foot of the o'ber, "If yer plesse, sir, could I count yer reg'lar fer a poiper every sight? Oi Ol got ter a port de fam ly now cause Oi m th' head uv iL He he's dere, sir," he finished with a dry sob, pointing to the open psge before me. Glancing down the colnma In besvy black, bold-faced type, I saw the name of t'rivate Dennis A. Murphy on the roll of honor with the brief, eiplnns tory line, "Shot through the head." Mike drew a step nesrer. "Say," he ssid, with just a touch ot bis old-time eagerness, "he's a hero now, ain't he?" Mike hss several regular customers la the office now, but he no longer blows la like a miniature hurricane. lis comes snd goes quickly but quietly.
