OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER. FORTUNE TO THOSE WHO WAIT. Fortune wmi atxmt ready to finite on those wlio have waited long and pa tiently in the hope of mum day being repaid for tbe hardship and privation consequent upon the settlement and de velopment of as oat-of-the-w ay section of country like the Sehalein valley. The extent and worth of tbe natural re source of that valley cannot always lie dormant in a busy world like thU, w hen competition is keen and capital it tbirety tor investment. Tbe timber of .the Ne- balem aection of country is worth mill ion of money, and those w bose abiding faith in that valley vast resource be ing developed has never been shaken are upon tbe verge of the realization of their hopes. The recent parehase of im mense bodies of timber, we are assured, were not made for speculation, bat for tbe par pose of inaugurating a vast sys tem of commercial activity, in the event of which the beautiful valley wiil bloom and thrive. It U no doubt true that Clatoop and Tillamook counties will at first reap a more direct benefit from this commercial activity becaae of their (re ographical accessibility, but eventually and not far distant, either, the cptr portion of tbe valley will receive its re ward from the development which is bow budding. The early consummation of the vast commercial projects is a thing no longer for speculative minds to ponder over ; the realization is practi cally upon the threshold. Other than the immediate wealth the inauguration of the great logging and lumbering sys tem will impart, the ultimate develop ment of the unsurpassed agricultural possibilities of that section will 1 a source of great wealth and consequent commercial benefit to this county. This will follow immediately in the wake of the first industry. j Tbe Salem Statesman, commenting ed-: tori ally upon this question last week, ! bad the following to say: j 'The largest and finest body of timber j in the world is in the Coast mountains in Tillamook, Clatsop and Columbia counties. It has been invaded only from tbe slopes running from the Co lumbia river. There is a company bound? of rra.nn to presume lht those is'and could lu4 ta of U liriit to n-. It was pro nounced as a bleak, barrel) region of snow and ice, ubt for human habita tion and more than worthles to the government. It is now an acknol elgwi source of grreat weslth to the people and of value to our trade anJ commerce. Who would have tbe temer itv lodav to advocate or even supi-st the relinquiebiiK'nt of one fool of tbat once denounced and much abased blesk, desolate and worthless Alaska? Who can say in the light presented in tbe history of tlie nation's punt territorial acquisitions that tbe Philippines, with more genial climate, fertility of sciil, valuable productions and productive power, commercial woods and minerali", cannot be made, un ier American inttu-eni-e . as valuable to our uvt-rnuient nnd people as Alaka?
