By this time tbe carriage had entered tbe gate and was coming rapidly up tbe long avenue that led to the bouse. Tbe Foster prided themselves on their well-kept ground, especially tbe drive from the lodge gate to the bouse, whk-b was bordered on either side by maple tree. They gave a delightful shade daring tbe summer months, and their gorge ous foliage in the fall made the Fouler place tbe glory of the neighborhood. But neither Richard nor Gertrude thought of the maple as he was driv ing under them that afternoon. He had been abroad two year; his only thought waa that, at last, he waa really to be with hi fiancee once more. While abe forgot ber father's second marriage, la Joy of seeing ber lover again. But after they bad been together an boor or two Gertrude remembered the letter and her face ML j "O. IMekr she said, "father Is mar ried again. I received a note Just few minutes before yon came, telling me about it. He said be should be home in a few days and wanted me to have everything done to make ber home-coming pleasant. Dick looked grave then replied: "v ell. it will be only for a little time, but," cheerfully, "I will take yon away right off, if you like." Gertrude laughed. "O! I guesa I can support ber presence a few weeks, but Isn't 4t dreadful for a man to get mar ried a second time." "Awful," he returned, with convic tion. Then, after a second's pause: "1 mean as a rule; of course, there are ex ceptional cases. That reminds me," be added; "yon bare heard me speak of my aunt Marion?" "Tbe aunt who, yon sa y, has redeem ed tbe race of old maids in your esti mation?" asked Gertrude. "Tb same," be answered. "WelL mother wrote me some time ago that she was going to be married. I suppose I shall bear all about It to-night when I go borne. Too know," be continued. "a great many years ago Aunt Marlon fell In love. 8be waa boarding In tbe country at the time, and, although be reciprocated her affection, they had not confessed their mutual attachment when ber nearest friend came to board at the same place. This young lady also was fascinated by tbe same gentleman. snd began to thick bow she could sup plant my aunt In bis estimation, fine Lad recourse to strategy; told number less falsehoods to both of them, and managed, In a short space of time, to provoke a quarrel between them. "Aunt Marion was proud and senst five, sought no explanation from ber whilom admirer, trusted ber friend, and lost ber lover. "In a year or two she beard of their marriage, which opened ber eyes a lit tle and caused tbe girlish friendship to be broken off. Two years ago she re seived a letter from this woman, who, it seems, was dying, confessing the whole truth. Hhe also left an explana tion for ber husband, which he found when she was dead. After a while Aunt Marlon acceded to tbe wldower'a repeated entreaties to be allowed to call, and In a few months tbey were en gaged. I guess my prospective uncle made tbe other woman a good busband, but be did not really love ber, for bis wife wrote tbat be bad never forgotten bis first love, and only married ber In gratitude for tbe sympathy and tender ncss abe showed when telling bow my aunt bad deceived bim. I think," con tinued Kicbard, "that I would never have made known the truth if I bad been In ber place. But I suppose the voice of conscience gets loud In the presence of death. It was a tardy rep atlon, though.' "Dick, wbat Is your aunt's name?" sked Gertrude, abruptly. "Why, the same as my mother's," be answered, somewhat astonished at tbe question; "Moore, Marion Moore. Pret ty name, Isn't It?" be added. "Too pret ty to change, I think. Why, Gertie, wbat Is tbe matter?" For tbe girl bad grown deathly white, and did not seem to bear bis hist re mark. "Nothing," she said at last, making an effort to recover ber self -possession, "only your aout la my stepmother." "What." ejaculated Kit-hard. "Annt Marios your stepmother! It cannot be and yet I sever knew ber hirer's name; never beard it. I that ber name, Gertie, are yoo sure?" "Here is the letter; yoo ca read for yourself," she answered faiutly. He saw there wa no mistake and won dered how ia tbe world be could recall bis words. "I am sorry, Gertie," he said at tast. "Of course, you know I never would have told yon had I dreamed of such a thing; 1 dare say I exaggerated. I never beard Annt Marlon ay anything about It All my information came from ber sister, who did not like your ber friend. Just forget all about it, Gertie.' Gertrude was weeping as if ber heart would break; but as be finished ajieak- ing sbe handed bim ber ring, without looking up. "Wbat 1 that for?" asked Kicbard. aghast. "I did not mean to hurt you; surely yon are cot going to punish me like that, when I offended so uninten tionally." "No," sobbed Gertrude, "It Isn't that. only I shouldn't think you would want to marry th daughter of such a mother." Kicbard langbed aa be took tbe ring and placed it on Gertrude's finger again. "What a silly child you are!" be said. fondly. "It wouldn't make any differ ence to we If every relative yoa bad was in the penitentiary. Tou would not be responsible fur their sin. Be side. I suppose your mother thought she hsd every right to try and win your father. He was not engaged to my aunt, you know, and tbey say all Is fair In love and war. Bo think no more about It, and we will never mention it again." Gertrude never did mention it again. but ahe thought about it many times and when Mr. Foster brought bis wife borne be found everything arranged to hi liking. lie had said to ber: "The boy will be .d right, and If Gertrude doe not treat you well let me know." "Never, James," replied Mr. Foster, "for yon might be tempted to tell ber the history of the years that are gone, and children should reverence their mother's memory, which I doubt If sbe could do, knowing all." But there was no trouble. Gertrude treated her stepmother with the nt most respect and courtesy, and be haved in such a way that Mra. Foster actually dreaded the girl's wedding day. A she watched the carriage that con tained ber nephew and his bride drive down tbe maple avenue, now resplend ent in Ita autumnal colorings, she sigh ed then turned toward ber husband, who waa standing near. Hsitman, entitled "Health and Beaniy." Address Dr. Ilattman, Co lumbus, O. SANS SMELL- SANS TASTE. net Tali Maa with Hia Nom Closed Cai Tea from Cefhae, ft would now seem from experi ments, which bave been carried on In the University of Iowa, that we do not taste many of tbe things which we eat at our daily meula. It is asaerted con fidently that we merely smell them. If the nose la tightly closed in the ordin ary man and he is blindfolded, be will not be able to distinguish coffee from water or a weak solution of quinine. This has been proved by experiinenu made on many persons. Common cof fee was said to be water, it was also aald to be quinine. Water was said to be coffee. Tea was called coffee. Tur key was called pork. Kaw apple waa called grape Juice. Malt extinct wa sherry wine. Lard wa pronounced butter. In short, experienced persons were unable to distinguish many com mon foods and drinks when sensation of smell were removed, and the con clusion wa retv-ijea that a person might even practice economy In earing by merely blindfolding the eye and substituting lard, pork and beer for butter, turkey and venison, while if the further precaution wa taken to close tbe nose, a very weak solution of quinine would puns for good coffee and vinegar for the most costly wine. Tbe experiment which led to these conclusion were carried on by Prof. O. T. W. Patrick, of the 1'nlvernltv of lowa, who has Just communicated some of the result of his work to the American Psychological Society. Prof. Patrick was enabled to attain ereat ac curacy In his work by tbe fact that one of the persons he exm-rinietited uuon wa an anosuilo (hat Is, absolutely de void of Ihe sense of smell. He was en abled thus to determine which sensa tions were those of taste and which were smelt Ho experimented also on normal subjects, and some of tbe re sults were surprising. There are only four simple taste sen sations, namely, sweet, bitter, sour and salt It Is said by some that there arc only two, sweet and bitter. All other sensations which are commonly called tastes are complex results of sensation of smell, touch, temperature and sight Tbe means by which we distinguish almost all of our common foods mid drinks Is not the sense of taste so much as It Is tbe sense of smell, touch, temperature and sight All the fine differences by which wo distinguish the various fruits, meat and drinks depend not upon taste at all, but upon these other senses. Pure sensations of taste odd hardly more than a certain emotional element to the complex sensation. Don't tblnk you can get on to the curves of a railroad by looking at the company's map.
