YOUTH AND LOVE. f outk and Lore fell out on day. Bald Youth to Lore: "I'll go my way Aud leave yon broken-hearted. I'll a thrmiph life Without ymir aldj I'll ueitber Rare on man or maid '" And foolishly they parted. , Off went haughty Touth alonet lie hummed a tune In merry tone And never looked behind hlui; While Love, at home, was aad and sore. And longed for merry Youth once more Alas! abe could not Cud hliul But Youth had not been walking long Before he hushed his merry sons- His heart was full of sorrow.' He found It hard to stay away From Love, if only for a day He came bak on the morrow. ? For Tove and Youth apart would dla Like flowers without dew or sky They'd fade if they would sever! Aa long as there is tide and time In every land, in every elime. Youth and Low will be together, ,v Philadelphia Times. ."'ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL." "TAMm sorry this has happened,' I she said wltb forced calmness. " like you much, aud thought we were always to be friends, but yoa can see that It Is Impossible for me to mar ry. It Is my duty to take care of pupa and my brothers and try to take the place of my poor mother. "I felt from the first,1 said Harry sor rowfully, "that It was hopeless to think of you. Yoo. are too good for me." "Don't say that, please, for I like yon much more than any one I know. If I ever did lo marry. It would he Just such a man as you good, clever and generous. But you see that It Is impos sible, don't you?" ' lie looked Into her appealing eyes, but1 could not answer. Nothing la so sublimely tragic as a beautiful girl sac rificing herself to a mistaken sense of duty, and she appeared so sublime to him that be couldn't help thinking ber In the right In affairs of the Heart a man, espe cially a young man, needs a disinterest ed: woman to guide, to encourage, or to cheek iilm, as the case may require. .Kow, Harry Watson was so fortnnate as to have a charming widow as bis coDfjtlant'and friend. She was several years bis senior, and be was once much In love with ber or thought be was. She had poobpoohed bis proposal and ftold hi in that, although she. thought him a fine, clever young fellow, she bad no desire to take a boy to raise, and tbat e mustn't talk nonsense. Of course he was tragic and went out West to bunt for grizzlies, hoping to be masticated by one, but he presently came to his senses and returned to the city. --He-was nat urally rather shame-faced when be met the widow, but she was so jolly that he soon forgot his previous absurdity, and they became fast friends. - " ' ' I "You poor boy!" said the widow In humorous sympathy.- "What would be come of you If It were not for me? But if you obey my orders 4 will guarantee tbat you will win her." After thinking the whole matter over Harry felt comforted, and he felt sure that the clever widow was going to do all In ber power to help him. But he did not Imagine tbat while they were discussing the subject the . peerless, self-sacrificing Esther was weeping bit terly and almost rebelling against ber fate. It was only by magnifying her duty to an appalling grimness that she finally recovered ber composure and soothed the pain at her heart to an ach ing numbness. As soon as the widow felt that Harry Jiad recovered from the first bitterness of bis disappointment, she ordered him to go and call on Esther. He obeyed, aud a few such calls restored to some extent their old relationship, and they could talk more like brother and sister. And one evening she talked to him In a most sisterly fashion, warning him wistfully to beware of the wiles of the widow. . "Yon know I look on you as a brother, and should not like to see one of my brothers as much In her company as yoo are. Of course she Is nice, but people say she Is so designing." "The little minx," said the widow when she heard of It "I know I am de signing, but she will find thnt It Is for ber happiness I am doing It now and Incidentally for my own or Just the re verse." ''" ' ' . She of course diagnosed the case as one of Jealousy, and was pleased. Har ry didn't understand the last part of bet remark, but he did not question. , "Are you going to the Madison musl caleT" the widow asked. - . "Yes. Esther and her father will be there," Harry replied. ... "Well. I shall be there, too, and I may want you to do me a favor. ; Will you do itr "Certainly." . ,-. , '" .. ; On the nlgbt of the muslcale the widow was triumphantly beautiful. There was the light of battle In her eyes, and that with good reason, for she bad brought her own affairs and those of several other people to a crisis. But no one could look at her perfect figure and animated face without feeling that sbe could conquer the most obdurate ly her charms and have her will. 1 Har ry had never seen her looking so be witching, for he had never seen her so thoroughly alert and aroused. Had Es rther not been present to allure and yet repel him with her Illyllke sweetness and nobility of soul It Is possible that old thoughts might have been aroused. But his eyes were dwelling constantly on her pure, calm face, and she seemed (to blm more than ever unattainable. ,Wben the evening was well advanced, the widow tapped blm on the shoulder rwlth her fan. - '"I have come to ask yon for that fa .yor," she said. "I am ready to do your bidding." "Take Esther Into the conservatory and propose to her.", ...... . . "I can't." ' - "You must If you do, I think I can promise you that yon will win her if not to-night soon afterward. But you must propose to-night." - Hope made him courageous, and be did as be was directed. . When he had found a sufficiently re tired alcove In the conservatory, he re newed bis proposal with the stately . beauty. But it was In vain. , "It cannot be," she answered. "My duty Is quite clear to me, and I must sacrifice my own feelings to It I feel Unit ta tnbe puro nf mv fnthor In him declining years Is a trust Imposed on me by my dead mother." - "Thou you are not Indifferent to meT" She was too honest to deny her love. She bowed ber bead In assent, and tbe tears welled in ber eyes. "I must get papa to take me home. She turned and walked away from htm quk-kly. Before she bad gone a dosen paces she stopped as If trans fixed aud looked with dilated eyes Into an nlcov she was passing. Then she ran back to Harry, and a most fainting, caught Ida arm. . "Take me bouiel Take me way from here!" ; He hastened to call a earn age. When they bad entered it Esther began to cry, and he tried to console her. In stinctively he put his arm stout ber, and sbe did not resist. A moment af terIt was the natural thing to do he kissed her, and, leaning her bead on his shoulder, she wept until her sorrow had abated. He could not Imagine what was the matter, but when they arrived at ber home she enlightened him. As she -was leaving blm In the conserva-l tory she had seen her father kneeling before' the widow, proposing to her, and had seen her grant blm a kiss of accept ance. :A11 her illusions about duty van Ished In an Instant Her father wai getting another to take care of him, and her occupation was cone. I shall leave homer she cried, an grily. "If be marries her, I must leave home!", r, ;. rw.-. w? . "I have a home to offer you," cald Harry.' . :- ;;.-' ? ;.Jl ,. It never occurred to Harry that the widow had ordered him to propose to Esther so that she could bring her fath er, aa if by accident to see the little scene. She had watched bis move ments, and. Judging the correct moment to a nicety, bad brought Mr. Townsend to that part of the conservatory. He liked Harry too. much to interrupt. which. Jhe .widow bad taken care to learn before she took the step, but he was naturally surprised. Of course she promptly sympathized with blm on los ing bis housekeeper, and so wrested from blm the proposal which she bad long ago planned. She bad not counted on Esther overlooking her part of tha drama, but that only hastened the ac tion of her plot, and she was not sorry when she beard of It. , . Harry was naturally profuse la bis thanks, for his happiness so blinded him to everything else, In the world that be thought it was for his sake that It had all been done. When this dawned upon the widow, sbe laughed loud and on, :. Oh, go away," she laughed, "to your billing and cooing with Esther! You are such a pair of fools you should be bappy together. And she added, some-i what mischievously: "Yon see, I am, in a sense, taking a boy to raise, after all. But you will find me an indulgent moth er-in-law." ,;. i When the planet Mars Is nearest the earth It Is 36,000,000 miles away. The drill of the Roman soldier was exceedingly severe,. It comprised not only the use of weapons, but running, Jumping, 'climbing, wrestling, swim ming, both naked and in full armor. - The largest hornet's nest that has evet been taken undamaged was more than a yard in circumference iuid one foot four Inches in length. In the suburb of Hcavitree, near Ex eter, a qnarrel recently arose between two neighbors, women, which before long came to the knowledge of the peo ple of the neighborhood. One of the women uttered this accusation against the other: - - - -,. - "Yott wretch, yon always keep a black pig and a white pig, so that you can wltcb us!' You ought to be scrag ged!". No butcher In the neighborhood will ever buy her pigs, as. If he were known to do so, he would certainly lose his custom. Sbe therefore has to sell them at a distance. It la assumed that .the woman herself believes In the notion, since If sbe did not she would hardly take the trouble to keep always a white pig and a black pig. Naturally. .
