ing through the interior of the hotel,

There was the wildest scene of excite

Hundreds of guests and employes were
in tbe hotel when the fire broke out,
and for many of them to escape with
safety was impossible. Probably 18
lives were lost within a half hoar, and
45 or 60 persons were injured in Jump
ing from windows and in rushing
through the roaring flames in the cor
ridors snd stairways. Many who wart
injured died later in nearby residence
and at hospitals, and otbert who made
