In talking with a gentleman recently,
it wat found that there is money in
the chicken business in this oounty.
Tliie gontleman has about fifty chick
ens from which he has realized as high
as $ 13 per month from the sale of eggs,
alone. While the local demand may
hardly warrant a large outlay to pro
duoe chickens and eisgs, other market
are near which would take the surplus
at good figures. ' No place on earth
affords better facilities for the produc
tion of eggs and poultry than Colum
bia county, and all the products of sev
eral large poultry farm could be dis
posed of at good paying prices.

The prospect are that potatoes will
not be a drug on the market in this
slate this winter. Grower all over the
state report that the early crop was a
failure) and the latter one is not good.
More to this county the crop is very
short, a large number of farmer not
raising much more than enough for
their own use. The stores in this place,
and in other -towns throughout the
oounty, are compelled to buy in Port

acreage in some sections is not large,

expecting good prices.

Mr. Edwin Merrill, of Deer Island,
was in town Tuesday. Mr. Merrill re
turned Sunday from Quiney. where he
had been on a visit to his wife, who
has charge of the public school at

prospering in that part of the oounty.
The school there ia progressing nicely,
having an enrollment of IT, and the
directors have employed an assistant
to Mrs. Merrill, realising that it waa
impossible for one teacher to properly
instruct auch a large number of pupils.
The people of that place take quite an
iuterett in their school, and have a
very convenient building, which is
neatly furnished, and have lately pur-
ebaeed a fine chapel organ to add to
it attractiveness. Religious services
are held in the echoolbuilding, the peo-
