Before another issue of oar paper a groat and important battle of ballot will have been fought, and the result of the contest He entirely with the voters of the state of Oregon. Tbi is one of the moat important eam- Baierns ever foagbt in our state, and we believe our voter are so well and reliably informed upon all questions at iarae that it is unnecessary at this time to sio into detail. The most im Dortant thing, though, and one which mast be borne in mind, i the fact that our nation i now iu the throe of war. and when you east your bal lot remember there is more at aUke at present than the mere tettliog of Ute and county affair. We need men elected to high places of trust who can be depended op to act in perfect accord with those who are now vroseeutSns! that war. and to that end yon must choose between two sets of candidates for state and national of fices. We honestly believe the safety - and integrity of our state and nation can better be entrusted in the hands of such men as Gcer rather than in those ot W. K. King for governor; bet ter iu the banns of such men a M A. Moody and Thomas Tongue in con gress rather than in the hands of Don aldson and vealcn. As to our county, we believe the Voters have .already decided in their own mind, too, this important ques tion of who can best serve u in those responsible capacities, and we feel as sured that from the most honorable aud trustworthy manner in which our county affair have been looked after in the past by republican, that . every man oa the county ticket will be elected by a handsome majority. We have pleaded our case honestly earnestly and fairly, aud we are now satisfied to submit the matter to you for your decision, and we know it will be in favor of the republican ticket. It the News had only opened its batteries of misrepresentation and muslinging month earlier the recoil from its guns would have bad its own party totally destroyed by election day. As it is, it lying, disrep utable attacks upon the republican candi can ha mads their ' election a car taiory, for there are many voter whose fealty to free silver and free trade caused them to affiliate with the populist party who do not sanction such contemptible po litical methods, and tbey will express their condemnation of those populwt-Spunlsh tactic at the polls iu a way that will make the pnpalist candidate sick at their stom ach. This mudslinglng on the part of tb populists will insure a majority of 200 to the entire republican ticket iu Columbia county. la this issue of lux Mist will be found tb official ballot as it waa printed; cor rectly marked. Voter should study this ticket thoroughly between now sod flection day, and be sure you mark your ticket In the booth exactly a we bar the ticket marked In the paper. Yon will ob serve that e "X" ai'H!r between the number and name of each and every re publican, and that Is the way your ticket should be marked before you deposit it, f ;udy tb wanner of marking carefully o there will be no mistake on your part H l, no ey matter to correctly vote the Aus- (y l.u!ioi, six! it behooves each voter i . , -. ,v exactly what he is doing at that GON : -, o'e i' as wc liiive ii marked. K&LCSLH . tiOOPr, TUU gentleman isareetJtat of The Dallei and wan nominated for congress by the re publican convention at Astoria. Malcolm Moedy la the son of -Qovernor Moody, and luherlta the highest type of moral and mental attainments from that honored and honorable pioneer of thin atate and Eastern Oregon, There Is congressional material In Malcolm A. Moody, He la edncated. bun- eat, courteous, and consistent in his private and public relations with other men, thus commanding the respect of all who know him. But there is an additional feature In this contest which every voter should consider. The organs of Faslonlet Donaldson are pro nounced In their claim that their candidate will be against the administration of Presi dent McKtnley. Mr. Donaldson himself b. so announced his position. This does not take in one part ot what Is being car ried oa by this patriot soldier, but It in- elude all. Mr. Donaldson is pledged to defeat the war measure ot this administra tion now being carried oa by this govern ment against Spain tor the freedom of Cuba, and to redress the wrongs for blowing np the Maine and killing our soldiers and sailors. It Mr. Donaldson is honest in bis claims and the claims of his fasten organs. ibis position he would be compelled to take if elected. If he does not propose to follow out the plaus laid down by himself and his friends, then he is trying to got into office upon mere pretenses. But the voters of this district do not have to goes at the position Malcolm A. Moody will take. He Is on ot the young patriotic tons of Oregon and his country. He stands firmly upon the solid platform of American rights and American honor In the question being fought out with Spain, and all ques tions of like tenor. Mr, Moody will do all within bis power to preserve this nation I He stands among the highest type of oar yoanger men for the preservation of this Union and its Sag, and he propose to be found Is line with all other patriot of hi country, both with vote and goo. Which will yon vote fori A patriot or a man who boasts that he will down the ad ministration and with It must fall oar war with Bps in and the freedom of Cuba. Taaaa undoubtedly will be an effort mad by tha populists this week to mislead the publie by publishing all kinds of has and malicious accusations against ths republi can candidate for county officer. Such tactic tbey have repeatedly employed dur ing tli last day of a campaign, and la don at that late time because tbey know the statement could be and would b refuted Populists are always too cowardly to make their ttataroent before hand, and ice pub- lie expect the employment of Just inch dlitbcnorabl and disrepntabl mean In an attempt to bellttl their opponents, Ther I nothing too tow or dastardly mean tor such creature to resort to, an exposition of which we cite In the attacks of one S. It is and has been the object of our organization to afford all the information needful to qualify tha averaee voter: I would, therefore, warn all of our followers against the beguil ing influence of Mark Hanna's hcti lious prosperity. At this our worthy president took his sent and wiped the perspiration from bi brow, while tbedumbfouuded bearers gave a sigh of relief. It was then announced that the floor was clear for the use of any member who wished to make any suggestion for the benefit of the order.
