Tbe following article taken from the Linn County Republican covers tbe entire field of politics and aires tbe true causes of fusion in Oregon and what may be expected from the tripartite alliance: "Ours is a republican form of government Every man, however poor, who is 21 years of age, is allowed a vote in helping make the laws of bis country. Every foreigner who comes to our shores for the purpose of making this country bis home, after com plying with certain requirements, taking the oath of Ulegiaaee, is a naturalized citi zen, and is Invested with the same power of citizenship as tbe native-born citizen. 'There is not another country on God's footstool where the inalienable rights of every citizen, be he a miliioaaire, or be he as poor as Job's turkey. Is so guarded and protected. If men would only think of this, and ponder it deeply, that the bestowal of tbe ballot npon each and every one of them, they would boh) tbe saeredness of tbe ballot as their dearest birthright, and they would ever use it for the honor, glory, and pros perity of their common country. "The reason that so many men trifle with tbe ballot, and use it for selfish and Mer cenary purposes, is because they bave no proper conception of what it costs to secure it for them, and of its actual and real in trinsic worth. It is tbe highest prerogative that can be bestowed npon them, giving them a voice in formulating the laws tbat shall control them, and yet, thousands of men use this sacred emblem of power, with which they have been intrusted, as their highest safeguard, for corrupt and Ignoble purpose. Allow demagogues to mislead them and seen re from them a diadem tbat kings and all the crowned beads of royalty cannot purchase. " We have at the present time a striking illustration of the corrupt us tbat is going to be made of the elective franchise. Here in oar June election, hundreds of men are going to mak a shameful ns of tbe power conferred npon tbem. They are going to surrender their ballots, which is tbe Key arch stone of their party principles, and offer up their party organization npon the alter of fusion! They are going to take a step they ean never retrace. They are go ing to surrender their party principles and their ballot to a gang of party wreckers to help them to secure the spoils of office and with not a single honorable motive in view that will benefit themselves or tbe prosper ity of their eou.try. ''Great humanitarians I Was ever such self-abnegation witnessed before? Martyrs to the esus of corruption. 'He who steals my parse, steals trash. Bnt be wbe filches toy good same takes that which not en riches him and leevas ne poor, indeed,' Aye, there's th rob 1 'He who filches from me my good name takes tbat which wot enriches him, and leaves me poor, Indeed.' Yes, after say name is gone, my party or ganization, my party principles, and my ballot, I am poor, indeed; political beggar npon tbe highway, the scoff and prat of honest men, and even the dog will pay no rcpecttomy fallen greatness I Aye, I'm lost, indeed 1 Tbe stigma, 'fusion' will cling to rae as long as I live. In after years, if I aspire to office, men wili say: 'That's tbe c&uk who sacrificed himself upon the alter of TiMioti.' sold oat his psjty organization, scIJ out his party principles, and sold his ballot to a fraiig oi party wreckers to help them into office,' " HOW LONS WILL IT LAST. While the belief Is general that tb war with Spain will b short, no do estimate can be formed for several reasons. Before it ends, Spain must consent t surrender its sovereignty in Cuba, and It may b un willing to do this even it cut off completely from Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Philippines. Its Beet may be retained nearer faom and much attention given to privateering.whicb It seems wili b sanctioned at Madrid. As long as th Spanish fleet is substantially In tact th orisis of th war will be bend. Hos tilities in any case must continue until th privateers are called in. If driven to Its home ports, Spain might hold out obstin ately and transfer to us tbe task of oro.fi ng th ocean with a fleet to stop th war. Nor can definite Id. be given of tbe length of time Havana ean resi-t. Th history of blockades aad sieves ranws from a period of we-ks to years. Another unknown quan tity Is th strength and offensive capacity of th army of Gen. Gomea, Its great op portunity it at hand, but its numbers and military value may have been exaggerated The war is one of inflated foolisbnesson the part of Spain, aad not likely to be length ened because it is senseless. That it will be over in a few weeks is unlikely. Tbe 126,000 volunteer called out will hardly sea Cuba before tbe late autumn, after the danger ot yellow fever is removed. Tbry will go into pleasant and salubrious camps in the South and be thoroughly trained in company and battery formations. The war can not be one ot heavy marching or fighting on land. Perhaps there sr. 60, 000 Spanish troops in Cuba, but they are without lines ot supply, and it is needless to wast strength in assaulting their forti fled lines. A stesdy pressure and close blockade will compel their surrender. Tb all appearance our army in this war will hare a comparatively easy time, and will look back apon it as in tbe nature ot a long encampment. But all conjecture, of course, Is subject to international complications. Our powerful friend in Europe is England. The position taken by her will discourage th disposition of Austria and Franc to intermeddle, and of Germany and Italy to give Spain at least a moral support. On the sea our navy may look forward to constant active work for some time. The most important point Is tbe movements of tb Spanish fleet during this month. Its only effective operation would be to defeat our main fleet and raise the blockade of Havana. This would be sn exploit of Im portance and rain prestige in Europe. Hut the odds against it are heavy, and a proper concentration of our ships should tender it impossible. A bombardment ot any lead ing American fort is not feared. New York papers say that city i" as safe from Spanish shells as anainterior city. Firing on the open coast or a smalt port would amount to nothing. Havana is tbe only point worth an offensive Spanish movement. If it can not loosen oar hold there its strategy will be annoying, but not conclusive. A Fabian policy for the Spanish fleet will lengthen the war, but at the same time add to the firmness and extent of our preparations. T. J. CtiKTOR, candidate for district at torney, has filled the position for the past two years, and has made a record that has proven him entirely capable to fill tbe re sponsible duties of the office. As a public prosecutor be has been untiring in his efforts to see that the laws were strictly en forced, but has always discouraged unnec essary litigation in the interests of every county in his district. His undoubted in tegrity, strict attention to tbe duties of his office, bave made him a host of friends, and his majority of 1000 two years ago will be doubled. Oregon City Enterprise. SCHOOL. Helens and at Fullerton's landing, tbe fin me company will not get much wood in tbis neighbor) hood unless they soon purchase. Frank Webber bad quite a severe acci dent since the last writing. (Jeer for governor and Dunbar for secretary of slate U team bard lo beat. Spain not only lack money and staying qualities, but the ia badly oil' for a just cause. There it not a man on th rennbli, can ticket but who will make an oblig ing and efficient official. McKiuley promise wool 10 cents per pound. Cleveland prosperity wool 3 to 0 cent per pound. Mr. George Hayes bat a thorouab knowledge of surveying, and will serve the people of Columbia county well tn that responsible position. CordwoKid choppers are nuw receiv ing 75 and 80 cent a cord. Wasn't il 55 and 60 ceuts they received only a Utile over a year ago. In the last campaign populist as sured us tbat if McKiuley was elected wheal would be worth only 25 cents a bushel. They're close figurer. McKiuley promise tawlogt 15 and 15.60 per thousand. Populist predic tions sawlog 12.50 to 13.50 per thousand, Free trade prices 2 60 to 13.50 per thousand. Isaac Copeland, tbe young gentle nr.au nominated fur school super in,. teadent on the republican ticket, is a man of superior qualification, and if elected he will be the proper man iu the proper puce. McKinley promise Wheat $1 per bushel. Jleveiaud prosperity heal 10 and 50 cants per bushel. Populist argument in presidential caiupaigu wheat zo ceuts per bushel. Republicans need bave no fear of tbe ticket, slate or county, this year. The men on both the tickets are the very, best the party affords and will com maud the suffrage of tbe party. Just cast your eye down th list of names composing the county republl can ticket, and you will agree with us that they are all representative men, aud men worthy your support in the election. A McKiuley promise oordwood f 1.80 per cord at Hcappoote, delivered un tbo cars. Cleveland prices cord' wood at Scappoose $1.35 per cord, lake chances on gelling money. Differeuce Id cent per cord, spot cash. Dr. A. P. McLaren, the gentlemanly coroner of Columbia county, baa per formed his duties in a creditable and efficient wanner, and he will be chos en by the voter on election day U continue service aa bis own successor. How about McaCuiley promises as regards shingles? At tbe time Mc Kiuley was elected shingles were sell- me for 60 to 7U sent per thousand Prevailing price now aud for several months past for shiugles $1.10 to $1.40 per thousand. McKinley promise logring camps in operation, employing hundreds if men at good wage. Condition our iugl894, 1895, 1896 few logs being put to, price f Z.OU lo $d.D0 per thous and, few men employed, and those at work receiving low wages. Every true, loyal American citizen, regardless of partisanship, is heartily supporting President McKiuley in tbe present coiinicl with Spa.n. It is a source of much gratification lo note tlmt there are but a few oph in this vicinity who are duiug otherwise. Mr. Watts ia a man of unquestioi.ed ability as a bookkeeper and busiuess man. 11 u many years' experience In matters of public affair, qualities him to serve acceptably in the office lo winch be aspires, and if elected he can be depended upon to do his full duty a aa obliging, efficient county clerk. Republicans should beware of prop ositions to tradd votes on election day. There is not a man on the republican ticket who need fear the result of tbe ballot. Vote the ticket straight, eu- lertain no proposition to trade, and the whole ticket is safe by a neat ma jority. Dr. Boss, the nominee for county treasurer, is a young man of sterling qualities and fixed integrity, obliging and geuial, careful and cautious, and if elected will make an admirable treasurer. He baa resided in tbis city since 1890, and tbe people of the coun ty will give him their support ia the election nearly at band. Columbia county has one of the best assessor in the stale. Mr. White has done his full duty in bis most im portant office for three years, and en ters upon tbe task of assessing the county again tbi year with a compre hensive understanding of all tbat is required of one doing that work. He will be re-elected to assess Columbia connty for another two yeata by a handsome majority. Will Meserve, the efficieot county surveyor and candidate for sheriff on tbe republican ticket, is a young man of exemplary habits, of superior ability in the conduct of his present office, a young man who has been successful in the conduct of his own business affairs, and a man who is obliging and genial in his every-day intercourse with friends, business people and ac quaintances. If elected to the office to which he aspires he caa be depend ed upon to conduct its affairs in the same straightforward, business-like manner that ha characterized the conduct of his present office, and will be a credit to the county, Wben you consider the important duty developing npon tbe man who represents this or any other county in the legislature, it ia then that tbe voter stops lo consider well how be will cast his ballot. This is really the only political office in the county, and from the manner in which his vote is cast in the legislative halls depend the destiny of our state and government, in a political sense. Men of eduoatioa aud intelligence are the only oaies to represent a county creditably in a place of tbat kind, and in Dr. J. E. Hall the people of Columbia connty will find just auch a person. Dr. Hall possesses all th qualifications neces sary for successfully and creditably representing us in tbe legislature, is genial and obliging, and will do oredit to his constituency. Thnt he will be elected there is oo question, because of the importance of tbe position. ntOGRAMMK.
