A man came from Lake Bennett to akag- way in eight hours, part of the way on skates. I walked to Lake Bennett in two flays, first day to ford, arriving at 3 p. m left at 7:45 next day, arriving at the lake at 3:45 p. m. The lakes aie frosen and about three feet of snow is on the summit I now feel confident that a wagonroad can oe made witn a reasonable expenditure, and I know that a sled road can be made with very little money. I also walked to Mieep L'anip and back to Dyea in one day, i tie conditions in this road are about tti same as those en the other road, both are by taxation for doing so, Dr. Hall gave some figures showing the present debt of the district, th amount of availuhle assets, and the estimated coat of running the schools for four niontba longer, annouuolng that it would require a levy of lo lu.ll te delrny excuses. Norman Merrill siurgmtcd that there was no hurry about gelling out of debt, and proposed a smaller levy. W, li. Conyera moved a levy of 8 iniiis, but npon the htmrd rather urging a 10-mill tax, these gentlemen changed their motion to 10 mills, and the raoti ui carried, with no open objection, by a practically unanimous vote. Every enterprising citizen should do all possible to assure the success of the new poultry association enterprise. (Statistics showing our immense im port of eggs and poultry are some thing startling. Iowa and Nebraska are no better adapted to successful poultry farming than Oregon, and the state cannot be surpassed anywhere lor tt natural adaption to this branch of industry. Thb new tariff law presented its com pliments to its trainers on their return to Washington with an evidence of steady growth in earnings. AU through the fall men continued to nock into that district, relying upon the transportation companies to bring in supplies of provisions for the winter. They were warned by experienced Alaskans against the danger that , threatened them, but very few heeded lue warning. The result is that starv ation threatens every man in the Kloa- dike region who failed to bring with him six month's supplies. . That Columbia county is Safely re publican there is not a question. The election of '96 demonstrated conclu sively the strength of the party vote in the county. Lines were closely drawn and each inch of ground warmly contested, the result being gratifying from a republican standpoint. Since this occurrence every instance has heaped honor and glory upon the vic torious party, ana lends encourage ment and stimulons to renewed efforts in the campaign of "98.
