Last slection day torn of the young Bryaoitea in this precinct tok par ticular pride in assertinjr, and reaesert inc to voters as they approached tha polU thai "a vote tor Mckinley voting tha ahoaa right off your feet I1 How about that, boyat Won't oae dollar wheat and tl JO shingles bay aboee? !, Hot many months ago we were told by oar friends, the enemy, that times did not improve the republican party would be held responsible. Now since times have improved and are still improving, the same people tall us that it is brought about by other eaoses thaa a change of administra tion. Queer people, these. Tot Beview says never in the his. tery of Spokane has there been snch a demand for harvest handa and that nunreoedented vragea are offered. From $2 to $4 per day and board tendered ia many sections. If this be tras wouldn't it be a good idea to tackle tha Spokane country this fall instead of going to Klondike? Pen dleton Tribune. Dbpri tha continued fan in the price of silver, Western farmers are scrambling for cars with which to transport their grain for which they are getting large prices. The thous ands of ears which have been lying Idle in ear shops and opon-Wis tracks ainoe 1893 are every one of them now being pressed into service, and thous ands of others are demanded and can1 not be had while tha prices for the grain which they are to transport have greatly advanced, while silver hss steadily fallen. Of course there ie no real significance in these two concur rent events, but Bryan and others would hsf e bad us believe last fall that wheat and silver rose and fell to gether. Tot. attendance at one of the Uni varsities of the state is said to have materially decreased during the last two years. The causa assigned for this decrease was the defeat of the university's football team In one im porteat aonteet. This ia probably cor reet to a considerable extent. Each college prides itself on its aggregation el bruisers who engage Jn football, and tha success of its mud-wrestlers is said to be a great advertisement for the in atitation, more's the tltV Civilisa tion must indeed be retrograding when tha standard of ah? institution of learning ia measured by its football team, a vocation -worse than prixs fighting because of a greater number engaging in It and more fatalities re- Thb condition of the shingle market is something to bring smilea to the faces thai have for years known only hard luck and grind. The demand is a surprise to all, for while an increased demand was expected, no one looked for it to such an extent as has de veloped. It shows no falling off even during the eastern harvest season. Prices have steadily advanced and most every one seems glad ; occasion- any a lumberman gets caught with soms back orders, that make bira aweat to fill, bat the honest onse take their medicine and the others crawfish. Tha atmosphere, however, is so stimu lating, that good humor is driving away contention and bickering. Long live prosperity I Lumberman. Last fall great sympathy was ex pressed, in certain quarters, for the poor men who were compelled to tramp the highways for lack of an op portunity to work. Of course tramps who are really looking for work and cannot find it deserve sympathy, bat these same tramps are still looking for that "opportunity to work, and al ways will be looking tor it, in the face of the fact that there Is now work for everybody earnest! seeking it. The man who really want to work does not tramp any great distance; be can always find employment enough to asm money with which to pay his fare on the transportation lines. There is a vaat difference between tha man who "wants" (f) to work and a man who wants to work. It is one of the most difficult mat tars in all human experience to gauge the editorial work or influence of a newspaper, says an exchange. As a rale the editor never hears directly from his work except in a case where a criticism may provoke a retort. He may put out columns of best thought in a political campaign, aad get little J estimate of !u value axoept through an oaoaaional kick front tha opposi tion. Ha way spur his wits to their best endeavor ia keeping local interest to tha trout, and receive no speoial sign of recognition. He may care fully and skillfully gather up and pre sent the developments within his local Seld yet aside from the fellow who happened to be missed, the public is "silent and silent all." He may strew with choice flowers the paths of the bridal party, bring myrlh and incense to the bier of tha departed; bind up tha hearts of tha sorrowing, and on all occasions endeavor to write "words filly spoken" which "are like apples of gold in pictures of silver" without tha faintest expression except, perhaps, a suggestion as to a wrong figure or a turned letter that may have appeared in tha work. Wheat in the New York market reached 1.06 per bushel last Satur day. This is tha highest price paid for wheat in many years, aad ia more than double that paid ona year ago. It is claimed in some quarters that the nrioa w!U reach 11.25 within a few weeks, and indeed, aftet the rapid ad' vanca during the past few months, it aeems probable that it may reach that mark. The price in New York is al ways higher than on this coast, but at Portland tha price has kept propor tionate pace with New York, on one day reaching 91 cents. There are now on the way to the Columbia river forty vessels with a total tonnage of 59.85J tone, and there are many more to follow, so that the amount of money cominir into Oregon for wheat alone this year wiU reach tar into the mil lions of dollars. Tha outlook for the Oregon farmer ia the most encourag ing for years. ATJGCST APPORTIONMENT. State School Funds For Columbia Cowaty Apportioned. BIST. CUtBK'S XAMS. AMOUJTT 1.... The Coal Creek Coal Company have driven their shaft 130 feet into the moon- tain, and the prednct ef tha mine is becom ing stesdilv better, Tbe coal rein dips southwest. Ths coal being mined Is bright and perfectly clesn snd free from any for eign substance. Ths vein being worked Is three and a half feet wide and from all in dications there Is enough coal In sight to last for many years. As soon as the tannel Is driven twenty feet farther, two rooms. each 24x30 feet wide, will be hewed out of tbe vein on either side ot the tunnel, thus enabling tbe mining to be carried on much mors expeditiously and cheaply thaa at present. Every fourteen ysrdstbe making of rooms will be continued and dividing walls taken oat after the coal Is removed within the space. Tbe ooal is exceedingly hard and brittle and tbe old miners at work claim it Is much bardsr than any coal found In Illiuoi. The coal will now be placed on sals In Astoria and Portland and ultimately in Ban Fran cisco. It makes a clear, bright, lasting Are and is excellent for both cooking and beat ing purpose. Tbe Rural Northwest says : "The most encour aging feature about the prune situs tion this year ia ttut there is a lively demand for prunes for October da livery. Local handlers of prunes are receiving frequent inquiries from the East for figures on large lots of prunes. and growers are already contracting a xocd deal of--trait. The-iirwetiUoraJ editor of tha San Francisco Chronicle notes, 'as an encouraging feature ef tbe situation in that state, that tbe in creased demand for dried fruits which haa been particularly noticeable in that state during the past few weeks, has alreajy brought about a substan tial advance in price. A good thing about this is that the advance has commenced before the growers have disposed of their crop to any extent, which will enable them to at least share tha benefits of aa advancing market."
