Republicans and populists may each be thankful next Thursday the form r that McKinley was elected, and the latter that Bryan received as many votes as be did. ' The free silver campaign has been waging lor lour years. The real gold standard campaign has been carried on (or only four months. Herein we have an illustration of the mightiness of tratu. TH08t far Eastern people wbe have contemplated settling In Kansas and .Nebraska will now go to California and Oregon, if tbey do not conclude to stay where tbey are, says the St. Lonia Globe Democrat. The recent populist victory in the state of Wash ington has no doubt put an effectual quietus on the inflow of immigration and capital into that state, which it has enjoyed for the last half dozen years. VICT0R1 dSD WHAT IT UXANS. McITinley'a lead in the electoral col lege will be 107. It ought, of course, to have been 207, or 407, for there i not a persou in this country who can give good reason why Bryan should have got an electoral vote at all. Still, the 107 majority will do. It is a longer lead than any presidential can didate has gained ainee 1872. except that won by Cleveland in 1892. Mr. Cleveland had n plurality in that year of 132 over Mr. Harrison, and a ma jority of 110 over Harrison and Wea ver. Hayes bad a majority of 1 ; Gar field of 59; Cleveland in 1884 of 37, and Harrison in 1888 of 65. McKin ley has a ranch larger majority than any of these, except Cleveland in 1892, while his indorsement in the popular vole will be more impressive than any other candidate ever gained. The immense popular majority, sup plementing the big electoral majority, makes the recent victory one of the most notable and decisive in Ameri-. can annals. Borne wild vaporing will be heard for a titne amon? the Alt gelds, the Bryans, the FauTkners, and the Joneses about 1900, but this will be dismissed with a smile by the peo ple. There will be no 1900 for the elements which have just been over thrown. Theirs is now seen to be the most thoroughly discredited of all the lost causes which have ever figured ia national politics in this country. It is entirely cafe to say that fully a third of the men who voted for the Chicago ticket, will, long before twelve months more pass, be ashamed to ac knowledge their folly. There is no menace to business in those bowls of Altgeld, Faulkner and Jones, and in the fantastic pledges and threats of Bryan, now that the election is over. The follies and villainies which these men represented will never be so potent again as they were in the crusade in which tbey have just been crushed. All the elements of danger to representative government which political philosophers at home and abroad have been for a century warning the country against, were united nnder the same banner in the contest just ended. The honest, but ignorant aoJ credulous persons who formed the mam body of the Bryanite forces, and who always fall an easy prey to the smooth demagogue, were ra-enforced by the f add ists, and all sorts who think that any change in the social regime will be for the better; the impracticable! and the shiftless, to whom life under any kind of con ditions would be a failure; the mal contents, the social . Isbmaelites and the anarchists who are opposed to government in any shape, and who would try to pull down Bryanism if it were ever established, and the crimi nals of all classes, nationalities and castes, whose hand is against all sorts of authonty, in addition to a goodly number of intelligent, honest and con scientious citizens, were gathered to gether under the same leaders in the recent sssanlt upon the government. This looked like a formidable coalition, and it was, but it went down to eter nal smash when the virtue, the intel ligence and the patriotism of the coun try combined against it. There is not the faintest probability that all these elements caa ever again be brought into the tame camp at any one time. The enemies of governments honesty and order have done their worst, and have failed. That 107 electoral and the 1,000,000 popular majority for McKinley proclaimed to the country that the fetters placed on business by the popocratic peril are smashed for (OOd. . . . : ' ; . ' Nixt Thursday is Thanksgiving, the day set apart by the president of the United States, when our people may gather in the churches and other public places for the purpose of giv ing thanks to Almighty God for the 'many blessings enjoyed during the p nt year. While each one msy feel that they have not fared as well as they might, or would like, there is not a human being in this lana wno nss not something to be thankful for, and it is but fitting and in accordance with a long established precedeot that a day of national thanksgiving should be observed. If Joe Blackburn really wants to fight. wby doesn't be tackle some of the Ken tucky editors who bsv been calling him liar, blackguard and other pet names T No man is better qualified, by acquaint ance with republicans in every section, to select a cabinet of competent men than is Major McKinley. Hs knows them so well that be will make no mistake. Tbe gall of certain editors who are advis ing President-elect McKinley to abandon protection, lest the feeling of some of tbe free traders who supported him be hurt, is great, but their judgment Is bad. Who will be members of tbs cabinet doesn't specially matter, so long as it is known thst tbey will all be men pledged to carry out tbs republican policy, and in ac cordance with the will of the people. "Little Billee" wasn't too much dsxed when hs got bis wind after his knockout to put in an immediate bid for tbe popocratic nomination in 1900. Wby, bless your sool, boy, there will be no popocrats left by that time. : If yon are going to the inauguration of McKinley and prosperity, you would better aot delay your preparations too long. Washington hotels sre already being flooded witb applications for inauguration accommodations. The democrats are beginning to talk sgain, and to a msn they are afraid that President McKinley will be everbordened with trouble. How touching these fears for their victorions opponent are. Still, w will Venture tbe assertion that President McKinley will aot ask any demicrat to help him bear his troubles. - Decency was probably the most potent factor ia tbe defeat of Breckinridge for a seat in tha house from Kentucky, and ws feel sure that ths sam influence will be sufficient to prevent sny considerable num ber of republican members of tbe Kentucky legidatore taking part in tbe scheme to send him to the senate. Croup is a terror to young mothers and to post them concerning tbe causa, first symptoms and treatmeat is the object of this item. The origin of croup is a common cold. Children wbe are subject to it lake cold very easily and croup is almost sure to fol low. The first symptom I hoarseness; ibis is soon followed by a peculiar rough cough, which is easily recog nized and will never be forgotten by oaa who hss heard it. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse. If Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is freely given all tendency to croup will soon disappear. Even after the croupy cough has developed it will prevent the attack. There is no danger in giving this remedy for it contains nothing injurious. For sale by Dr. Edwin Boss. The senate of the Fifty-fourth congress, which dies March 4, 1SU7, numbered by members Delaware lacked one owing lo the Dupont contest and of these 44 were republicans, 39 demo crats, and six independents and popu lists. The republicans lacked only one of a majority, but the six inde pendent senators, aided by six or seven bolting republicans, who were looking longingly toward silver, succeeded iu blocking every important measure by banging a silver amendment to it, aad refusing to vote for any bill that did not include a silver measure. When tbe Fifty-fifth congress con venes in the senate there will be 59 "holdovers,' 28 out end-out republi cans who will vote for gold and a tarifL Of the 31 remaining, six are independentsjncluding Shoup, Carter, Mantle and Cannon. Of these, Snoup, of Idaho, and Carter, of Montana, promise tariff votes. Of tbe 31 new senators, 15 are straight republicans, eight demeciata. four silvor, and four populists. This makes tbe straight republican vote 43. On all questions of finance tbe dem ocratic sound money vote will be large probably bringing the number up to 52. On questions of tariff tha vote will probably stand 46 including Hhoup and Carter with scattering approval from independents and dem ocrats.. If there are no contests there is some danger ia Kentucky there will be a complete seuate 90 members and 46 votes will be necessary to carry a measure. In case of a tie the vice president casts the deciding vote and there is no need to say where Vice President Hobart stands on questions of tariff and finance. Astoria Marble Worts J. H.
