Mark Ilanna must be still buy in c it up for a campaign argument in J.UUO, If so we hope he continues to buy it up lorever. The recent campaign wa a battle between theory and history. The pop- ocrals' war material was theory, while the republican' wa history, and aa a natural result history wa the more convincing argument. Facta will win againet fads every timt. pflarance, and a marked difference in the demand i visible on every hand. We predict thai Columbia county warrant will not go below 95 cenU within the next four years. The feel- iag of unrest aud uncertainty which prevailed up to ten dars ago has diss p peared and general bwaiuesd interest have taken on new life. It must be remembered that what we call good times cannot be expected to oome all at once, but it will come ind the beginning is already with u. It will be impossible, under the most favorable circumstances, to have a ger.eral revival of business before spring, althooth during the winter our people will look forward with a greater degree of confidence for the future, and money in the meantime 'ill be finding its way into tue cnan nels of trade. Instead ot the money of the country biding away it will cone forth seeking profitable employ meat in the industries of the country, 1 he election takes place on the first Tues day after tli first Monday In November, lh vote ia for electors, tb number of whom in each state must equal tbe whole number of representative and senator from th state In coagres. Tli (lector are required by the constitu tion to meet in their respective itatas upon the siime day, and congress has decreed tlio second Monday in January following the election as the date. The electors vote seperately for president snd vice-president (one of whom shall not lie from the same state as the elector) and the list of voteraafter being aif net), certified and si-sled, is transmitted to Washington, Urected to the president of lb senate. Congress is required to be in session for wonting the ballot of the electors upon 'he second Wednesday in the following February, the president of the senate open ing the certificates in the presence of tbe enate and house of representatives Jointly asseni'dtd. A majority of the electoral votes elect the presi'ent and likewise the vie prest dent. If no one has a majority, the eltvtion foes to the house of representatives, the three (or two) candidate having the highest number of electoral rotes being voted upon by stud's. The representation from cacl state has one vote; there must be two-thirds of the states present for a quorum, and a majority of the states elect th president If the house ot representative f.dls to choose a president before the next Murch lih, tbe vice-president acts as president. The vice-president will have been elected previon.dv. In all humane probability, be cause if b has been named by a majority of tbe electoral votes at the joint session of congress, the senate ia directed to select bim by majority vote from th two highest numbers on tbe original list, a two-third qaorura being required for this action. The battle is over and tbe victory won, not only in Oregon but in the United States. The success of the re publican ticket ia the result of a cam paign of education waged by tbe intel ligence of the country and managed by men who are natural leaders. In the state of Oregon in particular for this comes under our personal obser vation the campaign was in good hands, being under the personal su pervision of Hon. Sol Hirsch.chairman of tbe state central committee, and Judge O. X. Denny, aa secretary, as sisted by Mr. V. Cleaver at headquar ters. These gentlemen worked almost day and night for the success of the ticket, and to their, efforts success is largely due. But while they directed tbe work there were another class of citizens who carried it into execution. The speakers, at their own expense, traversed the state for weeks educat ing the people upon the pending is sue. Much credit is also due to the various county com mittees who worked iu harmony with the state committee, aud again the press of the state did somebody would better prepare for trouble. The college football player may ae tbeir minds; now tbat tbe mor important business of electing a president has been attended to, tbe public will devote some of it attention to the chrysanthemum-haired young men, who have been somewhat neglected of late. Henry M. Stanley, wbo ha been strangely silent since be got a seat in the British par liament, baa written a letter indorsing Lord Salisbury's attitude on tbe Venzuelan ques tion. Henry has the fawning act down fine; it put money in bis purse as a news paper man and lecturer, and be doubtless think it ought to help him along politically.
