INTERNA TIONA I AGRSSMSXT, ST. HELENS, OHCCON, SEP. It. PROTECTION AKD PROSPERITY FOR PRESIDENT Win. McKJnley, of Ohio. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT Garret A. Hobart, of N. J, Wan yon ara about to vote don't force that tha party that n6minated Mr. Bryan is responsible for the psss- age of the Wilson-Gorman law ; a law which reduced the pnee of everything you have to sell, including your labor, between thirty and fifty per cent; a law that baa brought disaster opon very part of tba country, and a law which Mr. Bryan himself was inslra manlal in having enacted. Ms. Bbyab indorses that part of tha Chicago platform which condemns the action of Fresidsnt Cleveland in tha case of tha Chicago strike; but, at tha same time, be favors the interstate commerce law and wishes it to be ex tended and rigidly enforced. Ue does not seem to understand that said law authorize federal interference in tba affairs of all of the states, and that the violation of it by tba strikers was the vary thing that caused- the troops to be sent to Chicago. We desire to call the attention of those persons who believe that Ent ail will never connent to interna tional agreement on tha money ques tion to the following resolution which was. passed unanimously by the Brit ish bouse of commons on the 17th of March last: "This bouse ia of opinion that the instability of the relative value of gold and silver since the action of the Latin Union io 1S73 baa proved injurious to tha best interests of this country, and urge npon this government the ad visability of doing all in their power to secure by international agreement a stable monetary par of exchange be tween gold and silver." It will be seen by the above that the sentiment in England ia fast growing toward international airreement. and at tha present rate of the change of ? . ... . I t l . i. opinion it wui not oe long prior suco agreement will be reached. The re publican party of Ibis country is pledged to and stands ready to carry out such an agreement at the earliest possible moment. The assertion made by the opposition that tha republican platform is committed absolutely to tha single standard ia s misrepresenta tion of fact. On the contrary it de clares absolutely and unreservedly against the single standard as soon as an international agreement can be consummated, and pledgee the party to labor for that result. It is a safe proposition that if international agree ment can be brought about it will be dona by the republicans, for that party ia the only one pledged to that end. Mr. Bryan ia opposed to international agreement. For proof if this state ment read his platform. ORGANIZE FOR BC8I.NES. State RepnblloaM Editor Foraa Association. ' The Bryan platform denounces the present administration for quelling the riot during tbe Chicago strike of three years ago, wnen tbe Illinois municipal and state authorities re fe4 or neglected to protect the lives sad property of the citixena of that state. From this we are given to un daretaad that, eindar the Bryan idea of government, law and order are not considered of any consequence ; or that a desperate mob might go on un molested in the destruction of prop erty ana tne taking of daman life. This is tbe logical conclusion to be drawn from tbe platform. The populists of this county have always bowled "economy' during the campaign. Four year ago "economy'' was tnetr watchword. As s net result of their plea for economy we have the record oi uassie, Kyser and Bcboon ovec Last spring the same cry for economy was heard and tbe populist convention pledged its candidates to strict economy in county affairs. Just how well those pledges will be kept by the populists elected remains to be seen in the future. "Tbe public be a ' baa been their role after elec tion, and we believe tbe present will prove no exception to that role. Fa tars developments will prove the cor rectness of this sssertion. What could more strongly appeal to tbe law-abiding, self-respecting ele ment of tbe country than the neces sity of upholding the law against mob violence. Tbe Bryan platform openly denounces the federal government for iaterferring in the Chicago riots three years ago, when a bowling mob waa engaged in destroying millions ef dol lars worth of property, and not only endangering tbe lives, but actually killing many people. That portion of tbe platform ia an open declaration toward anarchy, and undoubtedly was intended to catch tbe vote of tbe law less element of tbe country. Dees not such s platform deserve the severest condemnation at the bands of all law- abiding and self-respecting citizens; ana may we not aaK wtiitber are we, as s nation, drifting, when a party baa tne eorontery to condemn tbe civil authorities of the government under which it ia permitted to exist? Tbe spirit of revolution manifest in the Bryan platform is not socb sentiment as would be conducive to good results in a civilized nation in time of pro found peace, it smacks from start to finish with an undercurrent ef aeces sion and lawlessness, making an es pecial appeal to a particular class of people who have not tbe material in terest of the country at heart, and would rejoice at tbe disintegration of tbe republic i .i i ii i i, i i gssafc If Heating Stoves Bwwfs J QJ 7 J tomb; f CRvOfWf) I (Pounds! -"hL..... I Thi rain which mast befall oUr eonntry while passing through tbe transformation from our vast indus trial system to the conditions imposed by an application of free trade princi- f les, is most appaling to contemplate, n order to bold our home market, we must at once be reduced to the level of Europe as a producing country, and thus sacrifice billions of dollars in wages and submit to an incalculable shrinkage in values. But while this is taking place, our industries could not be kept intact. Our system of do ing business on credit is so universal that shrinkage in values would ruin every manufaetuiiog establishment and in turn wreck every bank, and in its destructive influence would reach every depositor and every borne in tbe land. We should be left with a bank rupt people attempting; without cap ital or credit, to resuscitate and read just oar industries to a condition un der which, if thsy were continued, they would yield meagre returns to labor and capital. This process, has Torn 'Watson nav vet Drove to be th oou in w democratic cnina soop. That Georeia "cracker." labeled Tom Watson, is spattering in a manner that in dicates an early explosion. Spain has at last granted this govern ment's demand for a civil trial for the Americans arrested on the filliboster Com petitor. Some of the heavy advertisers of tbs eonntry have a clause in their contracts giving them the right to cancel them if Bryan should be elected. Mr. Sewall would better not be too em phatic in asserting that ha will not with draw. It will only add to his pain if he should be kicked off the ticket, Btaropedins a convention and stamneH- ing a majority of the voters in this country are two very different things, as some peo ple are already finding oat. Mr. Bryan will never be nrasldent. tnt he will probably live long enough to be heartily ashamed of some of tbe sentiments lie has uttered in tbis campaign.
