After Chairman , home it is better than to seek con Thurston bad imparted to the nom-, umera abroad, and that the home de inee the information for which he was I mand is safer, more reliable and more ent, Major ,McKinley responded, in : part, as follows: "Great are the issues involved in tbe coming election and eager and earnest the people for their right de termination. Our domestic trade must be won back and our idle work ingnieri employed in gainful occupa tions at An .ericau wages. Our home market miift be restored to its proud rank of first iu the world, and our for eign trade, so precipitately cut off by adverae national legislation, reopened on fair and equitable terms for our surplus agncultural and manufactur ing products. "frotection and reciprocity, twin measures of a true American policy. snouu! again command the earnest en couragement of the government at Washiugton. Public conridonce must be restored and tbe skill, the energy and the capital of our country find ample employment at home, sustained, encouraged ana defended against the unequal competition and serious dis advantage with which they are now contending. The government of the United States must raise enough money to meet both its current ex penses and increasing needs. Its rev enues should be so raised as to protect (he material interests of our people wun ins Highest possible drain noon their resources and to maintain that high standard of civilixatiou which has distinguished our country for n-.ore than a century of Its existence. "The income of the government, I repeat, should equal its necessary and proper expenditures. A failure to pursue this policy has compelled the government to borrow money in a time of peace to sustain il credit and pay its daily expenses. This policy should be revised, and that, too, as spetHiuy as possioie. it must be ap parent to an, regardless of past party lie or affiliations, that it is our para mount duty to provide adequate reve nue jor tbe expenditures of the gov eminent, economically and prudently aamimstered. The republican party nas nereuiiore done this, and 1 con dently believe ii will do it in the fn ture, when the parly again ia entrusted run power in tbe executive and lee ielative branches of our government. J lie national credit which has thus far resisted every assault upon it must and will be upheld and strengthened. "If sufficient revenues are provided lor uie support of our government, cnere will be no necessity for borrow ing money and increasing the public debt Tbe complaint of the people is not against the administration for borrowing money and issuing bonds to preserve the credit of the country, out against the ruinous policy which baa made this necessary. It is but an incident, and a necessary one, to the policy which bas been inaugurated. The inevitable effect of such a policy is seen in the deficiency of the United States treasury, except as it is replen ished by loans, and the distress of the people who are suffering because of tbe scant demand for eilher labor or turn proaucis oi ineir labor. Here is the fundamental trouble, the remedy for which is republican opportunity and duty. During all these years of repuoucan control following resump tion there was a steady reduction of the public debt, while the gold reserve wa sacredly maintained and our cur rency and credit preserved without de preciation, taint or suspicion." profitable than any foreien market ca possihly be. It need not be added that the reverend sentleman Was every inch an American, striving u upuum American principles. Th position of McKinley upon the financial question should cut but lit tle figure in the contest among repub licans. It is sufficient to know at this time that he ia a protectionist, and upon that proposition alone should receive the support of every republi can. Adjustment of our tariff laws as outlined by the republican plat form ana advocated at all times by the present nominee, wil go far tow ard regulating finances in this coun try. What the people want first is an opport unity to earn some of the money already in existence. What do we j Some Interesting; Statistics Regard ing Details of Her Construction. Generally speaking, all that the public anows oi an iminansa floating fortress like the United Stales war vessel Oregon is that she is 918 feet in length, and has a displace meat of IU.GUO tons, and that the contract price to tbe government was t'3,228,000. but few stop to consider the enormous totals that are Involved in tbe construction o( such a monster. The 6an Francisco Call says : "The contractors, who bays to close ly figure on tbe cost of such a vessel, keep account oi eyery item, however small, and from this data the absolute cost of ttiem can be quickly estimated. From these lilt urea can be acquired an intelligent idea of the immensity of such a job, and an examina tion of these results, wbich are called tbe 'units of the Oregon, will prove interesting reacting. first of all is the cost of labor, and a close computation shows that there were 3,288,000 hours spent in building the areat ship, and that 328,800 days of ten hours each, were consumed in her construction no less an amount than 10.I75AS3 Dounds oi construction steel was used, and in addi tion 607,100 pounds of brass, 816,900 pooads oi wrougnt-iron aud id 2. 712 pounds of cat iron was used. It took 614.500 pounds of rivets to fasten ail her plates tngetbrr. and 87,000 pounds of copper pipe were used for her steam conductors. The Oregon Is an iron-clad, but tbe large quantity of 080.000 feet of lumber had to be used to finish her flooring aud cabins, and invidentallv 500.- 000 feet of common lumber was consumed for scaffolding, blocking, staging, etc. 1 he sides of tbe Oregon are additionally protected by coffer-dams filled with cellu lose, and of this material 126,000 poands were used. If all of her big guns were fired at on time, the abots would weigh. all together, 6800 pounds. Her engines, of wnicu there are 106, develop a power of 11,000 horse, and to rush her through the water at 17 knots the propetlor must make 130 revolutions each minute. "The Oregon will hav four great search lights, wbich will make everything visible within a radios of firo miles, and each will project a glare equal to 40,000 candle-power. Her keel wa laid in November, 18&1, but owing to the delay in furnishing tbe plates, the eonstroctor's trial d d not take place nntil August, 1894. Tbe final trial trip oo curred in May, 1896. She will be turned over to the government, fully equipped for war, on next Monday, the 6th day of July." sToartaea Kinds of Caha. Haller, a famous Swiss scientist of the eighteenth century, was onoa well rewarded for his politeness to a follow traveler. Some scientists find it hard to take an interest in any thing except their own specialties. It was not so with Hallor. His fel low traveler was a good woman from Berne, The conversation fell nat urally upon the commodity for which Borne is noted cakea. The Berne dame said with orida thfttshe oould make 14 kinds of cakes. W hat was her surprise and doli&rht when Haller asked her how site made tlieuif She eagerly began a recital. with copious explanations, of those 14 recipes, and she had a Rood lis tener. ; ' ' Perhaps Haller regretted his rash question, but he did not show it He listened patiently and smilinarlv to the end, and he and the Bernese woman parted very srood friends. though he had hardly spoken a word. It is safe to say that in all his scien tific researches he had not learned so much about the combination of but ter and sugar and eggs. oome time afterward he was elected to an important political office. From some quarters he re ceived an unexpected number of votes. Bernese cakomaking friend had been Bo impressed with the intelligence and ability of her fellow traveler that when she heard he was running for office she gave her relatives, friends and acquaintances no peace until she had secured their promise to vote for him. Delegates who have arrived generally appear adverse to dis cussing the probability that Senator Te ler will cut any figure, in the democratic con vention. The senator has a number of friends among the silver delegates who nave already arrived, and among them a some who would not be avers, to bis nom ination for president They feel, however. mat the conditions are not rip. for the springing of his name, and say it would be opposed to both tbe interests of Teller and the silver cause to bring him to the front this time, if at all. There are also a num ber of silver republicans snd populists in the city, wh are devoting themselves more to watching the course of events then to any active work. The populists who ara her say openly that Teller is tbe only man tne aeiuocrats can name that they will indorse. Silver republicans are not so pronounced. They put the matter less pointedly by saying that Teller is the only man whose nomination would insure the western state to tbe democratic ticket Is not the purpose of the senator's friends to nave him placed in nomination as older. will be. This course, they consider, will dc in osa iorn, and contrary to Mr. Tel ler s wishes. Their plan is not to make an aggressive campaign, but simply to be on the ground to answer questions and to iaae advantage of aay opportunity that may oner. vwiifiwmnu ouiuruiu.oi uoiorado. wa. asKed today to define the claims of tbe Tel ler men, and replied : Senator Teller is not a candidate in the sens, of seeking the nomination as a mem oer oi tne democratic party could be. The friends of the senator are simply trying to impress upon tbe democrats the enonnnna advantage there would be in uniting upon Teller, who could solidify all the bimetallic lorcea. .: "There ia no question that the one man above all others whose name is a synonym for blmetalism is Teller. His speeches upon the silver question constitute a series of treatises upon political economy which have given him the rank of the ablest states man in the United States on that subject.
