Ix the present political turmoil the supreme judgslnp seem to have bcea Jott sight of. It is, perhaps, generally conceded that Judge Bean will be re elected, and therefore no special oppo sition is manifest. Isn't it little strange that the names of Joseph Simon, H. W. Cor bett, et al do not appear on Judge Norlhup's petition as an independent candidate lor congress. It would ap pear to the average voter that the men who are bck of the scheme would permit the use of their names in the cause which they claim to be eo righteous. As s matter of fact very Urge percentage of the signer of that petitioa are democrats who hare no idea of supporting Mr. Northup, but have entered into the scheme for the avowed purpose of deceiving re' publicans into deserting Mr. Ellis. It seems now generally conceded that McKinlry will be nominated on the first ballot at St. Louis, though a strenuous effort la being made by the leaders in several stales . to prevent this, in the hop9 that if a nomination is prevented tor two or three ballots McKiuley stock may depreciate and thereby pave the way for a compara tively dark horse. There are a few tales vet to hold their conventions and elect delegates to the national convention, and it is not likely that the McKiuley sentiment will diminish between now and the day of the con vention. A veby large per cent of the cases in the present term of circuit court are for divorce. This condition may not appear encouraging to prospec tive candidates for matrimony, yet the matrimonial. mill continues to grind at a more rapid rate than the divorce mill as an annual transaction. This class of legislation, however, is not so expensive to the county as some other, so that it is better for tbo average tax payer for the court's time to be taken up with trying divorces than settling neighborhood disputes before a jury of twelve men, or the expensive crim inal trials. By looking over the petition filed by I. B. Shoemaker as .an independent candidate for school superintendent it will be discovered that a very large per rent of the signers are populists, which goes to show that the whole thing is a populist scheme to defeat Grant Walls and elect L. W. Van Dyke. It is also claimed, on what seems good authority, that Shoensak er'g candidacy is solely in the interest of VanDyde, and that in case of the latter' election the former is to have a place on the examining board. These trades, intended to defeat the will of the people, whether made in a conven tion or by petition, should be rebuked on election day, and the sooner defeat comes to candidate seeking official honor in this way the sooner the pub lie will receive the service to which it is entitled. J. 6. Watts has been an efficient school superintendent and is known not to be a political trick ster, and the game of barter inaug urated in this instance by his oppon ents ought to elect him. Th Fifty-Bret congress enacted financial legislation that placed this government beyond a condition such as we have now. It turned over to the democratic party a surplus in the treasury, with a law whtch, it the dem : ocrats had left it standing upon the statute books, would have abundant!' supplied the whole necessities of this government during all of these years. What did the democratic party do? Coming into power with the threat that they would destroy the revenue raising law of the country, with a threat that they would destroy the great, principle of legislation upon which the industries of this country were thriving as they were never thriving before, the very breath of their entry iuto power, even before they had acquired the nil fruition of the election of 1892, blasted as with a simoom all the industries of the conn try, paralyzed the resources of money, struck down the enterprises of the conntry, made bankruptcy where there had been prosperity, and then, coming into power, repealed the law by which the treasury was supplied with money, bankrupted the treasury, and made it impossible that the people of this country could pay their honest debts. Under the Harmon administration the revenues of the ' government, brought in under the operation of the McKinley law, were not only more than sufficient to meet the current ex penditures of the government, but, under the wise administration- of the republican party, the excess was ap plied to the payment of the national debt, and more thau 1260,000,000 of the national debt was paid off. Not only that, but the republican party turned the treasury over with $107,- 000,000 in gold and nearly 940000,000 of other money to the incoming dem ocratic administration. What has been done by the democratic party or the democratic administration since it came into power T Iustead of paying off any part of oar national debt, they have increased our national debt in the enormous sum of $262,315,000 in a period of a little over three years' time. ' This impose upon the people of tin country n indebtmlnet la in terect alone of 111,492,616 over end above tlie other expenditure that we bud under A republican administra tion. Thia expense cornea year after year, and these f 2U2.000.OOU are a mortgage upon the people o thia couulry extending over a period of thirty year. - CI.ATSKAMK. Mrs. James Shaver spent Monday m pur city. Anson Orwig was in town Monday with an eye to business. II. L Warren was in Portland this we It ou a brief business expedition. W. II. Conyer is at St. Helens this week on business before tue circuit court. : ' . An anniversary service of the Ep worth League is announced for next Sunday evening iu the church. The surveying of lands of the Bry ant estate is completed and plats are being made by the county surveyor. Ira Overt urf, of Mist, was one of th faithful who braved the storm and mud to ride over and hear Sovereign speak Monday evening. The Good Templars have moved across the street and now occupy the Kraft hall, where they .will be found at home on Thursday evening of each week. Mr. Miller, of Kansas, a veteran sol Jier, is in our city on visit to his daughter, Mrs. G. P. Uiatt, and ex pect to spend some months in this section. .. Norman Merrill went off on the steamer Mooday evening for the up river towns. Business, of course: pol itics possibly : a combination of both not unlikely. James Hodge waa over this week from the co-operative mill being put in place on the H. S. Glenn ranch at Lower Beaver. He re porta the mill about ready to begin work. The city hotel is mow closed to the public and the proprietor is spending some time getting account in shape. It ia rumored that Captain Nichols and family talk of leaving our city iu the near future; but it is only a rumor so far as wa now know. R. A. Lillack was on our street Tuesday with a wooden leg of his own construction that is as substantial, at least, as any patent member that might be bought "Necessity is the mother of invention" and Lillack says it beats crutches by a large majority. The retiring city council held it closing meeting on Saturday evening listening to and examining the reports of the recorder and treasurer, and ar ranging such mattert a were neces sary to dose up tbe business of tue year. A financial statement appears in the Chief this week. Tba new council hsld a meeting Monday morning and approved the bonds of the marshal and treasurer. The recorder-elect has declined so far to qualify a be does not like the judi cial tuDctions ol tae omce. tie may do so later when he thinks the matter over, a he ia being urged to do. The moving of the drybouse to the shinglemill is well under way, the building being nearly ready for the steam pipes. There is quite a lot of cedar shingle bolts in the water no so that the mill when it starts up in a few days will bave material to work on sufficient to make a stock of shingles. A case of cruelty to animal so ap pealed to the sympathies of a few of our citizens that the attention of the city recorder was called to the matter. He informed the driver of the crippled horse that further abuse of the animal would be promptly followed by prose cution. "A mercuul man is merciful to his beast." J. B. Metzler, of Portland, has re cently organized a tent of the Knights of the Maccabees at Mayger, and last week Dr. Hall went over to Mayger to make some medical examinations of those requiring insurance. He report that the tent is starting off in good shape, with an active, energetic set of officers and considerable of a member ship. Mr. Metzler expects to visit our place before long to revive that order here if it can be done. It is one of the popular .fraternal insurance orders of the day in this country, .gentleman by the name of Lind lejrol ample proportions and good na- tureklaf been visiting our school dis tact ia this viciuily to see what we heed ,in the way of school supplies. One ol the trials of a school director is to meet a school supply agent; and this one u a persistent aa the rest. He 'got a globe into our district, a bell in district 15, another globe in the "burn" district near Mist, a well a other suppuea elsewhere. He struck out on fool for Mayger Tuesday in tending to "do up" No. 25 on the way over. An interesting unmarried coupU leaving on I be steamer one eveniog last week gave rise to a rumor that a wedding must certainly be on hands. The result justified the rumor as to the wedding, but not as to the right couple. Our couple only went to Port land to see a wedding and when they returned brought with them Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cameron, who were mar ried in Portland by Bev. F. L. Moore last Thursday evening. "Bob" is well known here and his friends unite iu cordial congratulations. , A calitbum pian serenade was tendered the newly married pair Friday evening, but the music (?) waa cut short by "Bob's" generosity. The party of four person missing the steamer Shaver, came to Mayger on the Telephone Friday morning and were piloted over the road in a wagon with Will Chandler as master of transportation. The bride comes to us from Toronto, Canada. A announced beforehand, J. H. Sovereign addressed our citizens last Monday evening on the political issues of the day, more particularly, to strengthen the faith of the populist brethren, who were out in force ac companied, however, by many repub licans as well as a few faithful demo crats. It would only be truthful to say that all enjoyed the address, for the man is a good speaker and told spine funny stone at which all laughed. Republicans and democrat which tn speaker says are alike .nowhave become so accustomed to hearing the word "sbylock" that an address from a man advocating free coinage of silver would be incomplete without iu Somehow Mr. sovereign forget to use the word "goldbug" often enough to make a complete pop ulist speech, and really seems to have a little sympathy for bankers, with all their faults. With those slight defects the address was a very good on. . COUNTY COURT PROCEEDINGS, Business Transacted at the Regular May, 1800, Term.
