A well-known sportsman wa aeen com ing home from a shooting trip to Bauv ie'i ialand the other day with quite a number of geese that had fallen prey to bia gun. Last Tuesday evening Avon lodge, Knight of Py thias, of this city, had the pleasure of entertaining; number of their breth ren from abroad. The plan wa orig inated by Orphan lodge in Portland loroe lime ago to visit Avon lodgo in body, but through unfavorable weather and other unavoidable cir cunutanoe only seven leon from that lodge came. A few minute before 8 o'clock Inman 4 Paulaon' little steamer Hoo, Hoo, with K. D. Inman in charge, arrived in thi city with her full quota of psRsetigors, who at once made their way to the csstle hall, ar riving there promptly at 8 o'clock, where they were captured by the local brethren who, in order to subdue them a nulled almost every remsdy from the headsman' axe to waihtub full of ice cream. It must be admitted, how ever, that Brother Stingle made the great bit of the evening in bia review of Pythianiim. At 10:30 refreshment ware announced at the 8t. Heleni hotel, where spread wa in waiting that perhaps wa never excelled io thi city. Hera I where one did not need to be an orator to perform wall hi part. Here it wa that greater number diatinguinhed themselves than in the line of oratory. Here it was that priies were awarded to Brother Stingle for being the greatest living orator, Sink for having the greatest capacity for ice cream and to Dr. Thornton a the greaieit favorite with the ladies. The contest did not be come exoiteing until iu the second in atanoe, where Sink won only by a neck, with Stingle, Cliff, McPberaon and Beegle oloie in the rear. In the third instance Thornton distanced all competitors, though Waldman made ome pretention! in the start. Well, anyway after more speechmaking and good n attired joking it wai discovered that the hand on the dial were near inn the 12 mark, and the festivities were brought to a. close i by singing in a chorus "God be With You 'Till We Meet Again," and in a few minute the jolly Knights were away on their homeward jpurney, leaving behind those who appreciated their coming and patiently await a repetition of the pleasant event. The depot site of the Astoria railroad in that city baa been decided and the location agreed to. According to yesterday's Oregonian Mr. Hammond is in Asto ria preparing to let contracts for the construction of the remainder of the road, and says it will be completed within the year lHVU. PERSONAL AND LOCAL. This is the first day of May. II. P. Watkins was in Portland last Sunday. Mrs. M. J. Scott visited Portland Monday. Very few salmon have been caueht lots week. The wood flume teems to be an lured fact. Sheriff Doan went to Rainier ye- terday on official businsss. T. 3. Cleeton was attending to busi ness matters in Portland Saturday. Ye scribe tucceeded in bagging thirty-four nice tpeokled trout one day during tbe week. Captain James Good has been eon fined to his bouse for several days on account of sickness. Mrs. C. R. Hart, of Kelso, was in the city Tuesday, and went to Warren to visit ber father, J. S. Bacon. Captain and Mrs. A. Henderson and Mr. David Henshaw.of Houlton, were in Portland the latter partof last week. Geo. Davis, the popular partner of Reub. Graham in the law business in Portland, waa in town last Saturday evening. Edwin Merrill, of Deer Island, the democratic candidate for sheriff, was circulating among St. lloleuites lost Tuesday. County court meets next Wednes day. Probate matters will be attended to ou Mou Jay and Tuesday preceding county court. Deputy Sheriff Blakssley is out this week serving notices on those persons who were drawu as jurors for the May term o( court. J. S. Clooinger, A. King, Charles Muckle, W. H. Dolman, J. R. Beegle and Jacob George were visitors to Portland Monday. Mrs. C. F. Doaa has been suffering for several days'with an attack of rheu matism, and at last accounts was not greatly improved. Miia Anna Merrill, who has been visiting relatives at Deer Island for several days, returned to her home in Portland lost Monday. One way to give 8t. Johnson and Ole Bob man came up from the lower river fishing grounds last Sunday morning, and continued on to Scappoote to visit their families. Robert Patrick and Thomas Petti johu, of Rock creek, were in town last Friday, Mr. Pettijohn going to Aatoria that night and Mr. Patrick returned home Saturday. Walling, one of the best known Odd Fellows in the state, died at his borne in Portland last Monday even ing, aged 68 years. He was a pioneer of law, and for many years followed the priuting business. We have been informed that a man named George Dellinger, while loading wood onto a scow at Scappoose last Sunday morning, was forced overboard by a truck-load of wood, and drowned. No further faots were obtainable. a Two seins are being opetated on Sauvie'e island between Henrioi'a and Willow bar. Horses are used to haul the seina with. What success has been had in catching fish so far we have not yet learned. Mr. 8. N. Johnson, an acmiaintanoe of Mr. Kyle, of Columbia City, and late from Kansas, wai in thi city last Monday. Mr. Johnson ia looking for a small farm to reut for the aeason. and if the Oregon climate tuitt him he will probably locate with ui. A large number of people were at tracted to Milton creek Tueiday to witness the running of lose by the uie of the dam, but the logs did not run until Wedneiday on aocount of the cable at the dam-gate parting when the attempt wai made to raise the gate. Jenkins Lloyd Jone, who lead the servioes in th Oakland music hall, itarted the wheel a-rolllng with a public announcement that all bicycles ridden by members of tbe congregation would be cared for dur ing the sermon. This brought out the kniukerboukered lads and bloom ered lassies In great numbers. All other churches will fall in line at once. Mr. D. P. Skans, a Swede minister, from Portland, waa over at Mist to preach on Sunday, returning next day and spending a few boars In our city In waiting for the steamer to returu to bis home. On Sunday evening at tbe church Pro fessor Whliten give a talk to tbe congrega tion instead of the regular sermon by the pastor. The professor gave a very inter esting talk of half an honr on "life and law." A meeting of the republican club wa an nounced for lest Friday evening, but the illness of tbe president, and other attrac tions in town interfered and the meeting adjourned without any oratory being dis played. Henry Braunlng, one of the merchants of Mist, was In town Monday and took tbe steamer that evening for Portland. Henry has recently been appointed postmaster out there and expect to assume the duties of the office In a few days. W. H. Cony ere left hi law office, and in company with Rev. Atkinson, went off on day last week to fish for catfish. O. J. Bryant Has also gone to assist in tbe work. George Oonysr won the thank of the drug store proprietor by fixing the electric bell to that it will now ring again when th door I opened. The bell ha refused to ring for soma time, and George was able in few minute to discover th trouble and remove It. George is making a study of electrlo affairs and exhibits considerable genius in that direction. Another dime social wa held in the church Friday evening for the benefit of the pastor. A programme of music, read ing and recitation was listened to, followed by refreshments and a general social time. The band was on hands furnishing several selections and a number of orchestral pieces during the evening were a very attractive addition to the exercise. Our people hear with regret of the death of Mr. Monacle, a former resident of this city, who wa drowned last week in an at tempt to ford th Nebnlem river. Bhe was riding pony which it is supposed must have fallen with her in the water, though it Is not known just how the fatal accident occurred. She leave a family and will bs greatly missed. A number of our Upper Clatskani rancher being In town Monday gave the Impression that something must be In the wind, and later it was learned that there is an attempt to be made to organise a dam and boom and general logging company to operate on the Glatskanie river, and makt the floating of logs, bolts, etc., a mors prac tical and satisfactory business. Oliver Aa dersoo, W. A. Edgerlon, W. H. King, Ole Erlckson, Chris Johnson and a few others seem to be the most earnest promoter of tbe enterprise. W. H. The continued rains make th farmers bia on account of grain crop, but grass will make a tremendous crop. Tbe populist are building a family boat to go to tbe populist meeting at Mist. They will probably sav It to travel on the briny brook next June. A latter waa picked up on our streets a few day ago from a defeated republican candidate for office, making an offer to L, W. VanDyke, populist candidate for county school superintendent. The offer wa to come out Independent, so a to defeat Watt, if VanDyke would put blm on th examining board when elected. If Van Dyke accepts the offer tbey both ongbt to be bnried politically: but I don't think he will stoop to such work.
