The necessity for more talk is not urgent, but any improvement in the quality will be thankfully received. Th ceat of electric power in the great railway tunnel of Baltimore is rapidly declining, and in a short time will be no greater than that of steam. Electricity in the industries is march ing on with a steady and certain sweep. Thi people of this conntry desire peace with all nations, of course, and therefore tbey are in favor of the con struction of more battle-ships and tor pedo boats, as each things are wonder fully effective in the prevention of war, FOR A REGATTA. Editors Mist From Columbia City to Warrior Rock is one of lh best river race-courses imaginable. Dur ing spring and summer we have con tinuous upstream breeies. We are half way between Astoria and Port land, without the gales of the former place, or the calms of the latter. The points for observation along the St. Helena front are commanding, and the adjacent bluffs afford fine sites for picmcmg parties. I should think crowds would attend from Portland and other adjacent cities, and would suggest a meeting of St. Helen peo pie to discuss the matter and see what sum could be raised for prises at a three days regatta lor various river boats about the middle of July next. If the matter appears favorable to you please make a call for a meeting at some early date, respectfully, W. B. D. Next Mondav evening at the court house in St. Helens, at 7 :30 o'clock, has been suggested as the place and time tor holding the meeting above referred to. Ed. The liOwer Court Sustained. 8aux, April 6- An opinion was handed down by the supreme court today In tbe case of Tatum & Howen, appellants, vs. G. A. Masaie, respondent This is an action of trespass against tbe sheriff of Columbia county for unlawfully taking and disposing of property alleged to belong to plaintiff. The property was sold upon execution, in the case of Jasper Graham vs. Joaiah Wes ton. Tatum & Bowen claim to be the law ful owners of the property in Weston's pos session that was attached and sold. The court below fqund that Weston bad an at tachable interest in the property; that Tatum k Bowen's claim was based upon a chattel mortgage that was void and of no effect as to attaching creditors. Appeal was taken, but no bill of exceptions was filed. The supreme court rules that, if the plaintiff desired a finding as to whether tbey were tbe owners of tbe property at the time of the attachment, or other material findings upou the evidence adduced at the trial, it should have requested tbe same of the court in due time, and if refused or if against it, where there was no evidence, it could, by a proper bill of exceptions, have tbe court's action in regard thereto review ed: but the supreme court can only con sider findings which the record of the lower court actually shows. The exhibit con taining the chattel mortgage not being a cart of transcript, tbe judgment of tbe lower court is affirmed upon the shewing I chairman Convention Held Last Tuesday and a Complete County Ticket Nominated. AsHUtHD, Or., April , 1890. We have been in Ashland eight mouths today, and feel that we should like to let all our Columbia county friends know through the columns of our home paper Tea Okioom Mist, how we have enjoyed our visit to Southern Oregon, We cams here on a pleasure and health trip and have enjoyed It very much, and can all say that our health is Improved The altitude is very high and the elimate is dry, the city of Ashland being llHO feet above the level of the sea. It is a very pretty little town, being almost surrounded by mountains the Slakiyou and Shastas and just now those mountains are very pretty scenery. The foot hills are green with grass, spring flowers blooming, and the orchards a mass of blossoms, while at tbe summit there is a coat of snow. Mt. Buke is covered with snow winter and sum nier. and the city is supplied with water from it. There are a great many mineral springs here, too. Tbe soda and sulphur print flows through the town. We have visited the famous Black Sulphur springs at Woodville, Oregon, and thry are a very pretty sight. A great many health seekers go there to bathe in Its waters. We have also visited Murphy's soda spring where the water is constantly boiling up through the rocks, and the water has a very strong flavor. From this spring we could i Pilot Rock, which was the early pioneer's guide on their travels between California and Oregon. It is a huts square rock on the summit of the Siskiyou mountains, and can be seen a great many miles away. There is quite a variety of timber here. mostly of tbe sugar pine variety, though there is to be found ruantanetta. Juniper, laural or redwood, mountain mahogany, oak, fir, cedar, and an abundance of mistle toe, and nowhere in Oregon do tbey raise mere beautiful flowers than grow here, and more particularly roses, which are mag nificent. Fruits, especially peaches and grapes, grow bountifully here. We have bad several frosts that have done consider able damage to early fruits. At present tbe weather is very nice and the streets are dry and dusty. We all like Southern Ore gon and have not yet decided when we will return to our Deer Island home, yet hoping that we will all meet again soon, and that this shall escape the waste basket, we re main, with dee respect, your friends. Isaac BcM9AUit and Family. made. Opinion by Justice Wolverton. REVBES ITEMS. Bcsbia and France are not as sure as they were that England is out in the cold in European politics. Eng land has willingly exchanged ber splendid isolation for an understand ing with tbe Dreibund, converting it into a Big Four worth talking about A United States judge has decided that natural gas piped from Canada tinder the Niagara river is a crude mineral product, and therefore exempt irom duty. Tbe existence of such pipe line shows that annexation is go- " ing on industrially, if not politically, Ws have a political record-breaker in this county. There are four Mer rill's on the three county tickets al ready nominated one on the repub lican ticket, one on the democratic ticket and two on the populist ticket all belonging to the same family. I Cuba should win its independ ence Spain will have no reason to re gard the event as a deep humiliation. England had to take the same medi cine over a hundred years ago, and the colonies she lost have done so well Uiat she is not half sorry. It is said that W. J. KelUe has gone to California. II. B. Bortnwick. who some time ago leased a large donkey engine for logging use, has found it was not a success in the place be wanted it and has returned it to the owners. The little 5 year-old daughter of J. Jones was badly burned last Saturday by her clothing catching on nre by the use of matches. It is generally believed the child cannot recover. Etuil Wasser received a severe gash in his left foot last Friday at Borth- wick's camp while barking logs. He severed several toes from his left foot Dr. Sims, of Elalama, dressed the in jured member. While the team of H. B. Borth wick was driving along the road between this place and Mooresville one day last week, tbe embankment of grade gave way, pitching tbe horses down the hill. One of the horses had his neck broken and the other one suffered a broken leg. Tbe following day an other horse had his leg broken. The supreme court of Massacha setts has decided that a school teacher has no right to require a scholar to tell tales on a companion. Such a de ' ciaion is certainly in the interest of honor and morality, whatever tbe teachers who try to promote treachery among their pupils may think of it. The house of representatives has finally disposed of tbe Cuban resolu tions by adopting the conference re port by a vote of 244 to 27. The house also passed the river and harbor ap propriations bill by a vote of 216 to 40. "Large bodies move slowly," and the United States congress is no exception to the rule. Bipi bucaks should remember thst no party ever placed a ticket in tbe field whose candidates all carry the same strength, or, whose candidates are all equally popular. Tbe princi ples involved, especially with reference to the candidate for the legislature, is tbe point which should not be overlooked. Tbk disgraceful scenes attending the republican primaries and county convention in Portland last week does not tend to the public good, and is tbe direct result of bosaism which serves only to degenerate humanity and dis gust the better element of society. That both factions resorted to un scrupulous snd dishonorable means to carry the day is evidenced by their every action. It was not the free ex pression of the bone and sinew of the substantial element of the party, but rather the predominance at the polls of a rabbis imported for the occasion from tbe neighboring districts and from the slams of the city, who con tribute nothing, directly, toward tbe current expenses of government. Tbe faction that withdrew from tbe con vention last Saturday will probably nominate a ticket of their own and the result will be that both tickets will be defeated. Such tactics way suc ceed temporarily .but not permanently. YAXLEY ITEMS. J. r. jjupont went down the river the first of last week to get ready to start fishing when the season opens. Mr. Marshall has built a fine resi dence on his ranch this spring. J. Deleeki done the carpenter work for him. J. Dnpont and wife went to St Hel ens on tbe 4th of this month to at tend to some business matters there. W. Miller went to the city on Mon day last J. Deleski went ever to Mr. Barber's last Monday for the purpose of build ing a barn for Mr. Barber at Scappoose. Several of the friends from this place went over to Peris to a social gathering at Mr. C. C. Meyer's resi dence. They report a real good time. Twe Live Staved. Mrs. Phoebe Thomas, of Junction City, lit, was told by ber doctors she had Con sumption and that there was no hope for her, but two bottles Dr. King's New Dis covery completely cured ber and she says it saved her life. Mr. Thos. Egeera. 139 Florida St., San Francisco, suffered from a dreadful cold, and approacbirg Consump tion, tried without result everything else then bought one bottle of Dr. King's New Discover v and in two weeks was cured. He is naturally thankfuL It is such results, of which these are samples, that prove tbe wonderful efficacy of this medicine in coughs and colds. Free trial bottle at Dr. Ross' drug store. "Resolved, That we believe that econo my should begin at home; that we con demn the pernicious system of allowing deputies to county officers, nnless there Is a special provision for the same. Resolved, That the precinct assessors as demanded by tbe Alliance and by the peo ples' county convention of Columbia county in 1392, shall be made a leading measure to be advocated by our represen tatives in ths legislature soon to be elected. Resolved, That the people remember with indignation the indifference and der ision with which that reform measure was treated by the so-called ''grand old party" thca and now filling every place of power in tbe state of Oregon, and that therefore there can be no honest sincerity in tbe promise contained in the first resolution pretending to favor that reform set forth at their convention in St Helens less than ten days ago. Resolved, That we, tbe people, bold the party which has for twenty years past had absolute control in Columbia county and in all Oregon guilty and responsible for ths distress among us, and tbe nnpar- ailelled burden of taxation wbich cannot be met In Columbia county only by confiscat ing the homes of hundreds of our worthy, industrious citizens."
