Spain ha practiced ev.ry conceivable meth od ol extortion and opprecwon, where he should havs acted a frinndly and beneficial part, and the Cnbans have the best of reason for breaking away from her. The new United 8tatee ram Katah din ha gone into commission with a crew of ninety men and even officer. This ship has some novel features, and just what it can accomplish in a sea fight is a matter of conjecture. But its purpose is to go straight at an invading fleet and try conclusions. Thi commercial invasion of the United States by Japan is imminent. Her manufacturers are indomitable, and it seems that the Japanese are not disDoeed to buy anything abroad whioh thev can make at home. The balance of trade between Japan and the United States seems permanently gainst ns. Schatob MrroHUX has secured a favorable report from the senate com mittee on privileges and election on bis joint reeolutioa proposing an amendment to the constitution pro- Tiding for the election of senator by a direct vote of the people. There is little doubt that the resolution would vacs the house if that body were given an ODDortunitv to vote 03 it, but its fate in the senate is uncertain. Fbkhch editors are always comic when they mention names and places in America. One of them says Spain will not retreat before "Sherman, the brother of the slayer of the Colorado Indians." The Frenchman had Sher idan and the Piegana in mind. Victor Hugo referred to Grant as the ezecn tioner of John Brown, a statement supposed to have some relation to the fact that Le commanded the troops that captured Brown. Let the old men, if their memories co back to I860, recall the old hard ware store, and they will recall that on the shelves 95 per cent, came from England and 5 per cent, were pro duced in the United States. Let them go into the hardware store of 1892, and they will find that upon the shelves of that hardware merchant 5 per cent, is from abroad, 95 per cent made at home by American working men. Yes, made in American shops by American workingmen from Amer loan raw material. McKinley. A few months sgo an American with commercial instincts arrived in Yokohama with a collection of sam ples of American jackknives sufficient to stock a country fair. He announced that be had come to Japan to build up American trade. He did not re main long, and now it is advertised that be has turned up in San Francis co with a stock of samples of Japanese manufactured goods prepared to knock the American market silly. Hs is able, be say, to lay down all sorts of (foods in California, duty paid, at from thirty to fifty per cent less than the same clags of articles can be manufac tured in America. Ok the strength of the experiment with the Roentgen ray a scientist has corns forward with a pamphlet to claim that the sun is not an inconceiv able hot body, but a habitable globe With an ideal climate. It sends to the earth vast currents of electricity which, in pasting through our atmosphere, are converted into light and heat. According to this theory the earth is magnet, solarized in space, and be tween all heavenly bodies exists an interaction of electro-magnetic cur rents. These currents from the sun are fully returned to it, because the reaction of the other heavenly bodies equals the sum total of the sun's elec tric discharges. In regard to the cre ation of the earth, the authority has no explanation to offer, hut be says the tun is not going to roll off, man will not disappear, nor will the earth ever become a frozen ball on account of the sun' loss of heat. The county convention to take place bere next Tuesday promises to be one of more than ordinary importance, since there are a number of candi dates for several of the offices to be filled. The contest for sheriff and judge will be especially spirited, not only because there are a number of aspirant, but also because of the im portance of the two positions ; and at this time no one seems to have a cor ner on the situation. It is a matter which the convention only can settle, and whatever the outcome in that body, so long as it is a fair contest should meet th. hearty sanction of the party and the unsuccessful as pirant. The one object of the con' vention, however, should be to place none save clean men npon the ticket; men who will command the support of the people on election day, and men who are thoroughly competent to perform the duties of the office to which thej seek election. If this is done the republicans need have no fear of defeat at the poll. No point should be lost eight of that would tend to promote harmony in the party, Which mean succes at the poll. KxpriBUCAM auooess in Columbia county this year depends entirely upon the judgment displayed by the county convention which meet next Tuesday fn selecting candidate for office to be voted for ou the nrst day of June. This is naturally a republi can year, but notwithstanding this fact the personnel of the ticket will decide the fate of the party in thi county, and should anyone nominated fail of election there will be no one responsible except the nominating convention itself. We do not pretend to say who the candidates ought to be. That matter can better be settled by the delegates who are the representa tives of the people from the different precinots sent here for the especial purpose of serving the interests and wishes of those whom they are to rep resent. The matter, for the time be ing, U out of the bands of th& people, so to speak, but the people are again to be beard on election day to ratify or disapprove the work ot their serv ants ia the convention, and their righurwill be asserted by the ballot on that day. As stated before, this is lua onably a republican year, and if only clean, competent men are placed on the ticket the result need not be doubted. The people want efficiency, and if we misjudge not publio senti ment at this time they will vote only for men whom they have a right to expect will serve their wishes. Thi framers of the federal consti tution displayed great wisdom and foresieht in pre pa rug that document, and for a time it seemed to cover every phase of conditions for the ex istence of a great nation. But sa time goes on new conditions confront the people and nsw practices are required. This seems especially true in the mode of electing United States senators. The time was, perhaps, in the beginning of this government, when the present method was most desirable, but even then the plan was, to some extent, contrary to a republican form of gov ernment, because in a republio the legislative branch of government should be directly controlled by the governed. All the while the United Slates senate has been drifting further away from the people until now that law-making branch of the government has almost pasied beyond the control of the people. It seems absolutely necessary, therefore, that our federal constitution be so changed that the people elect, not only United States senators by direct vote, but all other public servant as well. With but one dissenting vote, that of Bontelle of Maine, the house of representatives last Tuesday passed the Confederate disability bill, known as Hill's bill to remove the restrictions sgaiust the appointment, as officers of the army and navy, of persons who held commissions in the regular army or navy before the rebellion, and who subsequently took part in the war on the side of the Confederacy, which passed the senate during the height of the excitement over the Venezuela boundary question. Candidate for County Judge. I wish to inform the voters of Co lumbia county that I am a candidate for the office of county judge, subject to the action of the county republican convention. H. L. WAKKEN. Crushed by a log. Gbaht'i Pass, March 21. A probably fatal accident occurred thi afternoon at Merlin, a milling town nine miles north of this plac. in which a tawlog rolled over a man named James Fielder while hauling loe. Full particular cou'd not be learned, but it is known that be is badly injured. He ha a family. Five Cent for Salmon. Astobia, March 20. One thousand fish ermen met here tonight and fixed the price of salmon (or this season at 6 cents per pound. It wi decided that if the cannery men would not pay this price the fishermen would strike. The Fishermen's Protective Union also decided to incorporate that body, and elected seven trustee. Harry Olsen wa elected light-keeper on Sand island. All Free. Those who have nsed Pr. Circuit Judge Hewitt today rendered a decree making perpetual the injunction heretofore granted in the ease of the state, plaintiff, T. Treasurer Metschan, defendant, restraining the de fendant from paving the $25,000 warrant, issued December 11, 1895, in payment for the site for a branch asylum in Eastern Or egon. In overruling the demurrer and the motion to dismiss the complaint, the cost were taxed to the defendant. Challenge to Debate. The McKinley Republican Club, of St, Helens, Oregon, hereby challenge the Pop ulist party of Columbia county to a joint debate on any question of politics, at any time. Debaters to consist of five members of th People' party and five members of the McKinley club, speeches to be limited to fifteen minutes to each speaker. Debate to take piece at any point in the county agreed npon. HARBISON ALLEN, D. DAVIS, President. Secretary. Call for County Democratic CONVENTION. THE Democrats of Columbia County are hereby requested to meet in Conven tion at Bt. Helens, Oregon, on Satnrday, April 4th, 1886, at 1 o'clock P. M., foi the purpose ot electing a bounty Committee, appointing delegates to the State Con Ten- tion and nominating a County Ticket for the ensning June election. It is desirable that all precincts of the county should be represented; but owing to me past nexieet to oold primaries, It Is now deemed advisable for the county Democrats to meet without the usual nioile of selection, and leave to the Convention the test of the qualification of its member, and- the pro portionate representation of tb several precincts of the county. Colombia County, March 6th, 1896. C. 8. EMERSON, Ohatrnan.) THOMAS COOPER, Co. Com. GEORGE F. MOECK. I SPAIN IS GETTING ANXIOUS Would Not Recognize United States (Commission. A. War With ThU Country Preferred to Sacrificing; Her Interest la the Island of Cuba. Mapsid, March 22. La Epoca, the lead ing Spanish ministerial organ, says: "An extenalv examination of the ac counts published by th leading American newspaper of the debates in congress show that, setting aside hypocrisy, th real issues, as soma senator point out. I whetlur th United State can take posse sion of Cuba by force or not, "K they can, why, let them declare war agaiust us; let them set their fleet in mo tion and send them to Cuba. They nsed not doubt that we will teoelrs them as It behooves u to do. It they cannot declare war, then, as honorable members of con- gresa have said, let these debates cease and let Spain govern herself with th liberty she i entitled to aud which uobody can limit. "Anything is better than to go on threat ening and hiding under the vail of Jingoism and th no longer fashionable Intentions of those whose aspiration is th independ ence of Cuba in order to obtaiu it annexa tion afterward." The Hersldo soya: ".Spain could never officially recognise a United Slates commis sion in Cuban affair. It is impossible that President Cleveland should hav such sn idea. War between Spain and America would be preferable. "Spain, in former times, has accepted the consequences of a more terrible struggle than would be war with the United States, and w should prefer to risk a war to rec ognizing a commission." Almost all the newspaper hare pretend to regard as unfounded the rumor that President Cleveland will appoint a Cuban commission, and they echo the sentiments of the Heraldo on the subject. No official intimation of such a commission has yet reached here. POINTED AND PERTINENT. The New York World ia trying to put a hoodo on Gov. McKiuley by predicting his nomination. It is difficult to see how respectable peo ple can oppose a measure that will close more than 0,000 of the worst saloons of New York, as it is admitted that the Rais- ens bill will uo. Even a sturdy a fighter as Dr. Talmage had to acknowledge complete defeat when be ran up against th grippe. The fool friend of the candidate is agnln talking wherever he can get a reporter's ear. He is by no means mpnopolized by any one candidate. A Belgium Indie goes un head of the er mine class. He discharged a prince who was proven to be guilty of several prison able crimes, on the ground that be was suf fering from "heriditarv degeneracy, and without penal responsibility." It will be safe enough for society to in dulge in a Byron revival, provided it does not include Byrontc nauits. Newspaper enterprise is necessarily litn ited in turkey, where the Sultan compelled the editors to announce the assassination of the president of Prance as a death from ap oplexy. The only fun the democrat can get out of the anti-nomination campaign is by dis cussing the probable republican nominee. It don't matter about their ova, and the most ol tnera Know it. Tbsre is a key which will unlock the Cuban deadlock between congress and the president, but it seem to have been tem- ponaiiy misplaced. Bismarck was born on April 1st. which shows bow ridiculous it is to call it "All Fools Day. Mr. Cleveland seems a little shy about announcing bis opposition to Cuban bellig erency. The North and Sonth Carolinian who have opened general store for the purpose of devoting the profits to campaign pur poses, may or may not oe made wiser ny their experience, but it is certain they will oe maoe poorer. Mr. Cleveland ia said to be annoyed be csnse the senate has virtually asked him to dehne bis position toward Cuba. 1'ray why? That licking the natives gave the Italian nas Drougnt aoout a temporary peace in Abyssinia. Good threshings have had a similar effect before, both on native and on individuals. If the X-ray come into general use frame houses will lose cast. Edison finds no dif ficulty in photographing through planks. There are republican editor who seem to forget the Interest ol the party in the in terest of their candidate. Gentlemen, thi is poor policy.
