According to the census enumera-Hi-i Just completed the population of Columbia cnunly bus increased 14 per oni since 1890. This is not a very laige increase, but when it is remem bered that this county is a heavily timbered section the rate of increase is gratifying. A stated in the Ore f onian a few days ago the population in heavily wooded district will not f row rapidly until the timber and coal f the county get the benefit of trans' porlation so that these commodities will asiial in clearing the land. Co lumbia county has for several years teen the principal lumber and shingle producing section of the state, and while this i trne it may be said that tho development of these industries has, in the mam, been carried on by local capital. The mills of the county, while of not Urge capacity, are nun rous, and for most part have been al rnost constantly in operation. It ha jnade little difference so far as the ag gregate output is concerned, whether! the prices have been good or not. The j .mills have been operated year after year with the margin of profit reduced with each succeeding year, until to day, though the mills are still supply- i jug the demand, the profit are small, But the operation of the mills hag erved a double purpose. While the great bodies of timber have been man ufactured into lumber, shingles and piling for the market, furnishing em ployment annually for hundreds of men at remunerative wage, the land from which the timber ha been cut has been largely .prepared for the plow, making it possible for the soil to be tilled with profit, and happy homes are now established where only a few years ago stood dense forest. The hillsides of the one lima logging camp is now an orchard, or a meadow or a garden, or, perhaps, wheatfield. There ta no end to the wonder that have been wrought in this section of great forests. To the wayfarer that visited Columbia county a few years ago a different picture is presented, and to those who come again a few years henoe the scene will sgain be changed. It has been well said that ''wonders never cease." Even so, and the won ders of Columbia couuty are just be ginning to be realized. There is another industry within our borders of no mean consequence, though small compared with those above mentioned. In the process of clearing land and making homes there is a vast amount of timber to be dis posed which is valuable only for fuel. This is cut into cord wood snd is placed on the market in Portland, sold to the steamers' plying the Columbia river, and to the salmon canneries. It is estimated on good authority that the steamboats alone plying between Fort land and Astoria consume wood to the value of SZO.UOU a month on an aver ; age all the year round, the greater portion of which is distributed within (he borders of Columbia county. To this add the amount consumed in pther branches of industry and the aggregate will not fall shot t of $25,000 a month. All these branches ol in d US try combine to produce wealth, and at the same time they develop me county's natural resources, which, in the end, must place Columbia county in the front rank with the foremost counties of the state. fRtiGBSSWS CLATSKIME. On approaching the town of Clatg- kanie from the river tne visitor is im pressed With the idea that he is nearing a great manufacturing center. And, indeed, this is comparatively true, from the time the steamer enters the month of the Clatskanie river there can be seen at one glance steam issuing from four manufacturing establish ments. The first one reached and be ing sitnated near the entrance to the river is the plant of the Clatskanie Lumbering Company.. A short dis tance above is located the Manzanillo mills, and further on about half a mile distant is Othe town of Clatskanie where is located the shingle mill of A. ti. & V. K. Tichenor and the sawmill of E. S. Bryant. The two first mills mentioned are lumber and shingle mills combined, and the first one, as stated to a repre sentative' of Thk Mist, is operated every day and part of the night filling orders that are constantly coming in. In addition to the four mills already mentioned there are a number of lum ber and shingle mills located within a radius of a jew miles of the city, from which point their product is shipped. It may be a source of some wonder ment to persons outside to know just how these mills can be operated profit ably sod sell lumber and shingles at present low prices. It is not surpris ing, however, to one who investigates the circumstance?. They have their business reduced to a business basis. Economy is practiced on every band ; the logs are worked closely ; the firms do not hire a days work done that they ca'n do themselves ; snd last, but perhaps most important of all, they are satisfied with a small profit. The wrjter was in the town of Clats khje three days last week, and, with put casting any reflection on gentle men pf leii-tire, it may be said the most noticeable thing there was the absence of the street loafer. The peo ple are busy, industrious, and are en deavoring with all their might to make the best of their surroundings. While tfie merchants, millmen and loggers are hot getting rich very fast, they are, nevertheless, up and doing, adapting themselves to present conditions, and instead of sitting idly by "waiting for their ship to come in," they are actually turning the tide of adversity into an increasing degree pf prosperity. How'mnch better il would be if, in stead of sending children to Portland apd other towns to school every year, the patrons of our public school would bestir themselves to better the institu tions of learning at home. Th,ere cer tainly seems no good reason why the common schools of the country should not be competent to instruct pppils in all branches of study desired until they at least reach the age of 18 years. If ile.nbl!o school it noi up to that .undard il is. indeed, the dittv of the patrons to Inquire into tha cause and eo to it that children of school age re ceive the full brnt-Ot of the money paid into the acltool fund that the may acquire a good common school education. It it not right that par ent who pay their pro ruU ol school tax should be compelled, through the inefficiency of the public school, to send their children away to receive their education. Again permit us to say that the standard of our public schools is far below what it ought to be, and the law providing for the main tenance of the public school does not contemplate such a condition of things. "While there is life there is hope is an old adage which the minds of Drocresaive people often wonder back to, and with this thoupht in mind one should not falter at defeat or tire In a rood cause. Enterprising people eel dom give up in dispair. With this spirit predominant la all time lue world has made great progress, stales have developed their resources, and counties, communities ana villages have worked out their own salvation and brought intellectual, moral and financial prominence out of a long stagnant state of chaos. To do this publio spiritednesa should prevail on every hand, and unity of action pro mote the general welfare, it is not only your duty but it should be a pleasure to every person to assist in every possible ay the efforts of others to inaugurate enterprises Irom which the geueral public will be benefitted. There is no industry, no matter how profitable to the individual promoter, bnt what is to some extent conducive to the general good. Then, since all cannot be employers, put no obstacle in the way of that class who must, of necessity, be employers from an op portunity of earning livelihood. A worthy enterprise is too often thwarted simply because the man who makes his money would be liable to mate a profit. This is a deplorable disposi tion among mankind and can be over come only by well directed self will. Echo rings ont "bow long, U Lord, will the human family be cursed with such a disposition." English papers generally commend the policy of President Cleveland, and why shouldn't theyT The only bit of important legitlation enacted during the present administration has been favorable to Eugland and English manufacturers. It is reported direct from London that mills which have been lying idle for years are now run' niog day and night making goods for our market. Why, indeed, should not England indorse the present demo cratic administration! Cleveland is the best friend England ever had. But if we mistake not it is high time this country proceeded to legislate for itself instead of catering to the dictates of those across the water. This country proved to her oppressors more than a centnry ago that she was independent snd could take care of herself. It now remains for America to reassert her in dependence, which will no doubt be done on and after March 4th, 1896. YANKTON NOTES. A number of oar people spent Sunday in St. Helens.
