for a long time and Mr. rotter was on
the night shift. He has been sawing
shingles for the company for several
years, which probably accounts in psrt
for the accident, because long service

ate a lack of caution. Mr. Potter has
a wife and four children. His friends
here where be Is well known regret

the state circuit court held at Albany
this week Judge Hewitt decided that
the state board of railroad commis
sioners hold their office for another
two years, or nntil their successors are
ellocted and qualified. Tbia suit was
brought by J. B. Eddy, one of the
commissioners, to oompel Secretary of
8Ute Kincaid to issue warrant lor his
salary, the secretary holding that in'
ssmuch as the legislature failed to
elect their successors there was no
railroad commission In existence, and
mereiore reiusea to issue warrant tor
the salary of the board. The case will,
in all probability, go to the supreme
court lor a tluai deoiaion.

railroad right-of-way committee, of As

This office is in receipt of a copy of

Congressman J. 0. Sibley of Penn
sylvania, and General A. J. Warner of
Ohio, leadors of the silver movement,

ing county roada; ordered that here
after no roads shall be declared a
county road until it ia opened and
placed in good repair, fit for travel
with team and wagon.
In the matter of the Jaquish road;
it appearing that what is known as
the Jaqiiish road, has been opened as
required by previous order of the court,
it is ordered that said road be declared
a county road, and that the old road
be vacated as prayed for in the petition.

of Uie Nile." is announced for next Satur
day evening. The subject suggests a very
interesting lecture.
Grant Jones had a bear scaln in town
last week and bVought a cub aa an addi
tional trophy, which Is on exhibition at
Merrill's hotel building.
B, 0. Frits left us again Monday evening,
this time to try business on his own ac
count in a mercantile way in East Portland.
We wish him success.
John Lindgren, of Mist, was compelled
to turn over the horses to the care o( some
one elae this week and make his way to the
county seat to serve as a juror.
An entertainment at the school house on
Lower Beaver was quite well patronised by
persons from this place. After a brief
literary and musical program, a supper
was aerved, and those who were there de
clare that the ladies oi Lower Beavar main
tained their reputation for being excellent
cooks,
Notwithstanding times are not what
might be wished, there are not many un
employed men about Clatekanie now, and
a more hopeful feeling prevails than for the
past two years. Money is not very plenti
ful, but we have learned to make a little go
further, and taking it altogether things
might be vastly worse than they are.
Pursuant to call a large number of our
citixens assembled in Conyers' hall laat
Saturday evening to discuss the matter of
railroad connection with the Nehalem val

ity into prominence. Hon. Norman Mer
rill was called to preside, with R. 8. Hat
ton as secretary. Several leading citixens
gave their views, all agreeing that this
place was the most available point aa an
outlet for the valley of Nehalem, inasmuch
aa an eaay grade at less elevation than any
other known route oould be secured, by
following np the Clatskanie river. A pre
liminary survey was talked of in order
that these facta of low elevation and easy
grade might be established by figures to
the satisfaction of all parties Interested, and
this survey will probably be undertaken as
soon as the building of the Astoria-Goble
road ia under way. In the meantime it
was decided to organise a board of trade to
look after the interests of this locality, and
after such decision the names of twenty
six persoos were signed to a roll of mem
bership, and a committee of live persona
appointed to draft a constitution and rules
for the guidance of the board. An ad
journment waa then taken until Tuesday
evening of this week to hear the report of
the committee and elect officers. Another
committee was appointed to see others not
in attendance, for the purpose of securing
them as members. There waa a good deal
of enthusiasm manifested with determina
tion to work for the interests of Clatekanie
and let the world know that here is a place
fitted by nature to become one of the lanre
cities of the near future.
