A subscriber to the Pacific Farmer wishes to know why creamery butter always outsell . the best of farm or dairy butter in our markets. There are two reasons : The one most ap parent to the common observer and one most commented upon is that creamery butter is sold in such large quantities and is so uniform that it es tablishes its reputation, and the repu Ution as much as the article sells it. The other reason, and the one over looked by most people who comment on the subject is very different. The fanner who makes good butter, and is near a market large enough to handle good creamery butter in large quaoti ties, does not have to sell to the gro cer. He sells to the private customer the year round at a good figure, con sequently his butter does not come in competition with the high-priced creamery; it is the poorer class of the country butter, the poor imported but ter, and the poor creamery butter PltON KAINlEB. A. Ross has rented the 'Winchester place for the season. Miss Lucy Stehman has gone to Stella on a visit to friends. Mrs. A. L. Richardson has recently been visiting in St. Helens. H. B. Borthwick took a raft of first-class piling from here last Monday. Messrs. Lee, Clark and Brous are build ing a large fish trap just below .the city. Martin Both, of the Pacific Fish company, is preparing tor a large trade this season. Smith A Sons' mill is running on (nil time with large prospective orders In view W. H Inius, ot the Review, has moved into the cottage formerly occupied by T. J Cleeton. It is reported that theSuflolk shingle mill will soon be operated under the co-operative system. A party from Astoria Is negotiating for purchase or lease of tbe sash and door factory at this place. Marion and Arthur Riggs have launched their new boat, and will, at the beginning of the fishing season, go below. Mrs. A. H. Johnson, of Portland, spent several days in this city last week visiting her daughter. Mrs. A. T. Dobbins. Mrs. Dolph Brant and family, accom panied by Miss Daisy Lewis, have just ar rived from Lane county. Miss Lewis will spend the summer here. With the railroad talk and the question of an independent wharf which is just now agitating the minds of our citizens, there is no lack of subject for conversation. BACHELOR FLAT. There was a meeting of tbe bachelors of the Flat at E. Morton's one evening last week. The bachelors were all present but one. It Is presumed be was attending to other important matters. A few married men were there from motives of cariosity. There was a fall string band and C. Wick strom brought his swinette. Dancing was kept up until 12 o'clock, wben every body went home happy. C. Wickstrom is logging for H. O. How ard. E. E. Quick has his quarter section all fenced and seeded to grass. J. Mason has grubbed and plowed an other large new field this sprint. The road to Mainville is a disgrace. If CLATHKAN1E. MoDrlde's Vast Kutate. This, from the New York World, will probably be news to many Oregonluns: "Senator-elect George W. McBrlde, of Ore gon, was an ardent lover of out-door life, an excellent horseman, and a sure shot with a rille before he was crippled by a fall from a wagon a few years ago. Since that anol dent he has been compelled to use crutches. He is one ot the band of barons of Oregon, his estates In Columbia county extending from the river front several miles buck to the mountains. Senator McBrlde li 41 years old." CONSTIPATION - Is called the "Father of Diseases." It is caused by a Torpid Liver, and is generally accompauied with Sick Headache, Bad Breath, Etc, I To Treat Constipation Successfully wmu..,, f. something to make his end of that road Op the prices of best creamery in the passable along Lumsn's field there will be nouses doing the best business. In I complaint made to the county court by plain words the best farm butter does not sell for less in the market than the bast creamery, because private families get it before it reaches the market. 1 - 7It now seems pretty certain that f tbe Astoria-Goble road will be built within the next few years. Indeed tbe proposition of Mr. A. B. Hammond savors more of business than any former arrangement. Details seem to be in complete order for the construc tion of the road save one thing, name ly, the risrbt-of way. The people of Astoria have agreed to secure the right-of way without cost to Mr. Ham mood. For them to succeed in this will depend largely on the sentiment of the people along the proposed route Should they decline to grant tbe right- of-way it will be a serious obstruction to the enterprise snd, perhaps, prevent the road from building. In our opin - ion the property-owners cannot afford . to refuse to make these concessions to the road, since their attitude will have a great deal to do with the road being pushed forward. While it is true Mr. Hammond has asked an extension of time, this need not discourage those interested, for it is only sush a de mand as any safe business man would make under preseut strained condi tions. The gentleman has begun in a cautious and conservative way to com plete a large undertaking, and be onght to succeed. Zip. Real Estate Transfers. George L. Corrv and wife to P. A. A raft of Merrill's logs Is ready this week for transfer to the manufacturer. Miss Abbls Bryant is teaching at the school house near Ktlgerton's this week. R. 8, Hatton commenced teaching a term of school at Mayger Monday morning. Two or three white hats have recently ap peared on our streets, showing that spring I here. Quite a delegation of the old Tichenor crew are employed at tbe Kdgerton mill this spring. John Llmiftren remained over a day with his team this week; a rather unusual thing for John to do. James Fisk got a raft of logs off, and started for Portland the first of tbe week to look after them. The new shingle mill Is In option again Losg Qf Appetite, and gives that portion ot the town a busi- 11 nest-like appearance. H. W. Brown and James Intel went out to Mist this week to continue work on F. Merrill's sawmill, near there. Special quarterly meeting services are to be held at the Stewart creek aohool house on Saturday and Sunday next. The time tor holding the Sabbath school was changed by a vote of those present last Sabbath from 3 p. m. to 10:30 a. m. Horse flesh sold very cheap at the city marshal's sale last Monday. $3.20 for a horse is getting down to first principles. Martin White, county assessor, was in town this week looking after some of the outlying districts. He will do up the town a little later. J. M. Blackford, assisted by his brother. A. W. Blsckford, is painting the Marsh land school building and public hall, and expects to point tbe new residence of Chas. Graham. Fred Langfelt succeeds to the Swager shingle mill (late Giggey A Co. ) He does not seem intimidated by the collapse of the late proprietors. Monacle ft Krati are now the proprietors of a good team of horses , and received a new wagon by steamer this week to com plete their outfit. Miss Khoda John was a passenger on the steamer Saturday morning, returning here to take charge of the Lower Beaver school, which she begun teaching this week. Frank Merrill was over front the mill to spend Sunday with his family and take a band in the city election. He reports pro gress in mill matters with a considerable amount of manufactured lumber on hand. Charley Johnson has been doing good work ploughing the meadow that has twice been flooded the past year. Its coating of sand will be rather an advantage when put in shape again. We were pleased to see the Pbaver com ing into its landing here last Monday with its new coat of paint and tidy appearance, after its long absence. The Messenger left us on Saturday morning to give way for tbe Shaver, and everybody likes the chance. Miss Mildred Boyle spent Saturday in our city on her way from Portland to Mist, where she heiran school on Sfnnrlnv mnm. iug of this week. In default of caucus nominations one interested party, after little consultation, devised a ticket, and in exhibiting it found another ticket bad been formed in another locality. These tickets were both printed, one called citi zens, the other independent. On the morn ing of election another ticket, called Peo ples, suddenly aprang into existence, giving plenty of material to choose from so far council, at least, was concerned. There was quite a good deal of scratching and al tering of tickets, but the result showed a pretty good selection, as follows: Presi dent of the council, E. S. Hatton ; council- men, A. F. Myera, N. Merrill, N. Nichols, W. E. Conyers; recorder. H. L. Warren; treasurer, J. E. Hall: marshal, J. 0. Camp bell.
