Plenty or Sand.-The high water ol last spring left sand and sediment on Deer Island to the depth of several feet. On Muckle Bros. pUca the aand filled In from 8 to IS feet deep all over it. The lower places were tilled in, making many of them on a level with the higltat ground. Several acres which was a lake before the high water were plowed and seeded to grass last full. While the tilling in by the sand killed all the grass, the inland is now placed above ordinary high water mark, and once the sod i formed again the land will be mora valuable than ever before. ' " School Afportionmente. -8chool superintendents have been notified by State Trexsurer Metsihan that there will be no further apportionment of atale iohool money at present. "Old Pap" Shef field, as he is commonly called, who reside on the Marqnam plaue near Gilltnn, was in town on Monday. Mr. ShefflelJ is on of the old pioneers of Oregon, having come here by way of the Isthmus with General Grant in 1851, and after Stopping temporarily t thi plaon the company proceeded J Vanoouver, Wash., where General Grant bad charge of the military poet. Grant afterward resigned his commis sion at Vancouver and went to Cali fornia, but Mr. Sheffield remained there for several years. He haa lived in Oregon aver since, and about one year Ego took up his rej.lri.noe at the above named place.
