I Mr. Young takes the examination for I a state diploma. I In the Right Dirbctioe. Repre- ' sunt live Patterson ha a bill that will, if enacted, render valid in other coun ties teacher's certificate issued in any given county. In the large counties of Eastern Oregon such a law would '. afford much relief to teachers, some of whom have to travel many miles to . esaminatiott. Some time ago 8tiieriiitendetii I Watta received a petition aignt-d by a number of the legal volar in that tlla- I trict Baking that the district be divided near the center north and south. A I little later he received a remonatrance signed by about the same number, protesting against the proposed divia- t Ion. A Eod many of the aame signa- tores appear on the remonatrance that appeared on the petition, and Mr. Watta is considerably taxed to determ ine wlisl c.une to pumue. Plenty or Sand.-The high water ol last spring left sand and sediment on Deer Island to the depth of several feet. On Muckle Bros. pUca the aand filled In from 8 to IS feet deep all over it. The lower places were tilled in, making many of them on a level with the higltat ground. Several acres which was a lake before the high water were plowed and seeded to grass last full. While the tilling in by the sand killed all the grass, the inland is now placed above ordinary high water mark, and once the sod i formed again the land will be mora valuable than ever before. The aame is true or ail the overflowed land along the Co lumbia. ' " School Afportionmente. -8chool superintendents have been notified by State Trexsurer Metsihan that there will be no further apportionment of atale iohool money at present. The reason assigned ia that there haa been but very little of the semi-annual in tereat due January 1 on the elate echool fund now loaned out paid in, and, owing to the hard times, the atale does not feel disposed to push He col lection, as the account ere all good, and suing wold not hurry matter, but produce a lot of foreoloMires with no one to bid on the land. He ii unable to say jitl when there will be anot her apportionment, but the probabilities are that it will not be for some time. An Old Pioneer. "Old Pap" Shef field, as he is commonly called, who reside on the Marqnam plaue near Gilltnn, was in town on Monday.
