It will be with regret that our young people will learn that Mr. Gilaon, r.f Houlton, will cut the great? amount of timber away from tha skating pond known aa Broyles' lake. Thia lake baa been the scene of much merriment In tha way of skat ing, and when the timber ia cut away it Ta feared that a difference will Uke afTect ia the freeaing of tha lake, and tbua apoil lota of sport. fl ' , Married. At tha home of the bride's pareote, at PitUburg, laat Sun day, Miss Attla Matthews and Mr. Wot. Lea, of Rainier, were united in the boly bonds of wedlock. The bride is one of Columbia county's foremost society belle, while tha groom is one of Rainier's quiet, steady and induatrioua young men, tha city marshal of that town at present Tkb Mist Joins a large circle of friends in wishing them a prosperous journey through Ufa. ,- I undated. The people of varno Bia have been experiencing consider able difficulty of late with high water. The recent heavy enow and rain waa the rauae of the Nebalem river and Rock creek raising to an aimoat un known height, aweeping logs, brush, etc., along with the raging torrent, and flooding part of the town. Per sona, eoneeauenilv. journeyed to their Iilaeee of business in smallpoaU, so we lava been informed. 8aencer Rose didn't tell us, but we had good reason to believe tb story. Stop thb Bochtibs. Why should the oounly court pay k bounty on tha soalpa of wild animals, especially tba larger oneeT Tha bounty tin a cougar or bear doea not encourage their kill ing. Indeed, people will kill theae an imal whenever and wherever they get a chanoe. It is necessary for their own protection and the protection of their stock. It may be practicable to offer a bounty on squirrels, gophers, and some others of the orop destroying kind, hut tha larver animate will be killed whenever opportunity afford whether a bounty ia offered or not. Gravity Water Everything now pointa to the possibility of St. Helens being supplied with fresh mountain i water. II the proper encouragement ia manliest this thing can be brought to a auooesarul termination, and 8t. JJ.elens can hav as pore, clean water a any In -tha. state. An im provement is poniihla bver the present aupply, and we earnestly hope the change can be brought around. The proposition, we believe, ia to bring the water from one of the Urge springs on Germany hill, a thing whioh could be easily done without requiring the out lay of a great amount of money, A conservative estimate duces the cost of tb proposition at about 500, Sidbwalk MfBTiMa Pursuant to a call for a meeting of those Interested in a sidewalk from Houlton to this place, promptly at 7 :30 Monduy even ing a iarg crowd of aulhuslasllo per sona gathered at tb courlhoua and proceeded to organiz ana atsouss me problem, Wm. II. Dolman was elec ted to the chair and Dr. H. Rt Cliff, secretary. The following resolution waa submitted to trie aemtiiga oy Mr. W. B. Dillard; "Reolvd, That a sidewalk from St. Helens to Houlion is a necessity, and that said sidewalk be built on aa atralglit a line a possi ble." Tb resolution was adopted. Mr. Dillard SDoke at leiiKib on the subject, and stated that he and others bad made a survey of me route, aim found that the walk could be built on an aimoat straight line, without a bridiii of any kind, and said the walk would be a benefit to tieople residing at both places, to Hie pro)rty owner, and also to all business men. Others spoke favorably of the proportion, u. H. Lamont read report oi council com mittee on sidewalka, a follow : ' We, your commiite on sidewalke would respectfully teport that w And there have been $4 In money and 26 day's work subscribed to the new sidewalk fund ; that it will uke 9120 worth of lumber to complete the same, and that we would recommend that the city of St. Helena appropriate 186, the amount necessary to complete l lie walk to Houlton." Tha following per sons were appointed a committee to establish a route, and report on same; bav.ng power to make an estimate of coat, etc i J. Muokle, Jr., Thos. Cooper, G. D. Gilson, John Urie, and A. N. Clark. Upon atiKgestioo of Mr. Dil lard E. E. Quick waa appointed to look alter the right-of-way. Many persona from Houlton were present, and all manifest a willingness to do what they could to secure the walk. After numerous remarks by sundry persons the assemblage adjourned to meet again two weeks from laat Mon day eveoing. Adjudged Inianb. Laat Tuesday, afUr an examination before a board consisting of Justice Swager, Dr. Chal mers, Dr. Cliff, and conducted by At torney Allen, Wm. A. Meeker waa ad judged insane and committed to tba asylum at Salem. For some day past Mr. Meeker evinced signs of in sanity, but it waa thought that careful watching and attention by a pbyaioian would result in his cure, but all with no avail, and in the afternoon of that day Sheriff Doan took the unfortunate young man to Salem, Mr. Meeker's insanity waa caused, it ia thought, by the use of strong drink. It will be remembered that Mr. Meeker was sher iff of this county two terms, and made an efficient officer, besides, be com maiided the respect of the entire com munity. A the sheriff paased down to the ateamer with the unfortunate man one could see many heads bowed in sorrowful though of the sad over taking of one who had been with aa for so many rears. It ia hoped to aff ect a cure for him where he has been placed if such can be done. County Fribtino. Alleged news papers of the county have had a great deal to say in the past about eiliorbl tant nricee being charged for county printing, etc. At tba January term of county court the printing, according to law, must be awarded to the paper having the largest circulation, the price, of course, considered, but not one of theae so called papers put In an appearauce and asked to compete, for reasons, perhap, better known to themselves. - If tbe price haa been too lugu they bad an opportunity ' to I duce it if they have the circulation to juatify. As a matter of fact, Commis sioner Schoonover ha taken it niton himself in the past to compare The Mist's bills for job printing, with thooe of Portlaud houses, and rind that by keeping the work at home tbe county saves about forty percent. Tbe court concluded in tbe preinUes that Thb Mist's work had beeu very aatisfactory in the past, and awarded it the con tract for another year. To thb Point. The county court atN it laat session took a step in tb right direction by not allowing road super- visors more than one day's pay for everv alx dava worked on tha road Road aupervisors have been known to work their omoe lor wuat there waa in it in Columbia county, regardleta of tha publio good. The late order of court Will, to some extent, prevent these abuaee of publio trust. Men who bave tha interest of tbe road die tricta at heart should be appointed to fill these offioee; men who will not work the thing entirely In their own interest. It is true a man should re ceive lust compensation for his aer- s lust compensation for his aer- vices, but it ia evident to many that some have received pay for what they have not done. Heux to the Grand Jury. Wm. Lee, marshal of Rainier, charged with allowing a prisoner to escape, was tried before Justice Swager Wednes day, and held in the sum of 9150 to await the action of the grand jury, Th case is rather a knotty one, as the defendant' is charged with allowing one Albert Matthews, who was placed in his official custody, to get away. Matthews was arrested by R. H. King for stealing a net belonging to the lat ter. Matthews is in hiding somewhere in the vicitity of Rainier, but his ap prehension will, no doubt, be brought about. W. J. Deits and Thos. Cooper are the sureties for Mr. Leo. Thb Sale Confirmed.-The sale of the Oregon Paciflo railaoad to Bonner Hammond for f 100,000 was con firmed by Judge Fullerton at Corvallia last' Saturday, The property is said to represent a caah investment of sev eral million .dollars, beaides there is nearly -on, million dollars standing against the road aa operating expen ses during the last year or two. Two different lot of the. former manager have. tiled notice of appeal to the su preme court. So it now seems certain that high tribunal will have to settle the long pending controversy. In the local lodges of Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows several mem bers are communicaatsof th Catholic church, reports the Pendleton Tribune.
