Orafaa, welcome alien to visiting member. ST. HELEN, MEtWR, JAB. . You eon count the republican tm paper Id Oregon that are supporting Senator Dolph on the fingers of one hand. Thus are six newspaper men in the Oregon legislature, all republican and all have declared themselves a opposed to the re-election of Senator Dolph. ' Utah will come into the Union with more population than Wyomiug, Idaho and Nevada combined, and aa it ha 60,000 children attending the public schools, the prospect of ita remaining republican ia excellent. Tbb oldeat voter at the polls in Bos ton last week waa a woman of 95, who has never missed her vote since women in Massachusetts were given the suff rage (or school trustees. The answer to the question as to whether women will rote or not if they have the chance seems to be it depends on the women Tbb Mist has no deaere to dictate to any member of the legislature how be should vote on the senatorial ques tion, but suffice it to Bay that if the member of that body represent the wishes of a majority of their constit uents Mr. Di.lpb will not get one vote. The members knw 'this fact, and it only remains to be seen whether they will beed it. It appears from the latest statistics that America, or the Western hemis phere, had, at the end of 1892, 218,671 miles of railroad, or 31 ,090 miles more than all the rest of the world. The roads of the United States at that time ; comprised about 176,000 miles, which was more than the combined mileage of Europe, Asia and Africa. We have 25.12 miles of road for every 10,000 in habitants, against only 4.22 miles for Europe. This shows at a glance the ; importance of the railroad system in our plan of prosperity and progress, and also the wisdom of permitting it to be operated without annoying and injurious legislative interference. Tbs Catholic church, in obedience ; to the edict of the pope, has denounced orders of Knights of Pythias, Odd Ftl lows and Sons of Temperance, and is sued an ultimatum that nit members of the Catholic church withdraw from tnoee orders, all because the priests were not permitted to inspect the rit uals ot those orders. It is pr bable that some may withdraw in obedience ' to tbs pope's commands, but he who would do so is uri w..nhy the hluh honor conferred upon him when taken into those order, aud the sioieties are better off with him out of it. In those order manhood alone ia the essential qo.ilfncatioa, and neither the pope of Rome or Harvey Scott are competent to criticise. . v , Tbb Ongonian still insist that any man who favors an increased coinage of silver and consequently oppoved to Dolph, is a crank, a lunatic, flighty, crotchety, visionary, viluirative, and ' " rie. It applied these term Hative Hofr of the Salem 1U8 that gentleman lia Relieve in more dver ,a senator other . He Oregooian is 'v s .. TBI FtOPUT WISSiS cotg rissr. From every quarter and irora every nook and bamlet the oommon people are demanding a change ia United 8tates senator. Among the popula tion in Columbia county we believe sir. Dolph's entire strength could be counted on the fingers of two hands. The people want a change, and sinoe the people are the government they have a right thava their wishes in the premises carried out. Mr. : Dolph's aotioa in reporting adversely on the land grant forfeiture) bills, whioh gives to the raitrxtda undisputed title to 54,000,000 acres of the publio domain, not one foot of whioh have they ever earned, has greatly increased the eon detonation of his coarse lately, and the only way for the republican party to overcome its effect is to elect a new man who ia In touch with the people instead of the railroads. A conservative estimate will give the opposition to Mr. Dolpb nine out of every ten votes in the atate. This senatorial question is one that voters of all parties have seriously etudied for some time, and they know what they want. The candidates for the lesria- lature knew what the people wanted last spring when not one of them dare announce publicly or privately that hr waa in favor of the preeeot incumbent for re-election. The voters took them at their word and ones mors clothed them with power to serve their wishe and elect a man of their own class U the United Htatee senate, balieviun confidently that Mr. Dolpb would not be selected. ' Can the legislators so far forget their dnty to their constituents as to return the very man which, in all fairness to their people and honor to themselves. the, by implication last June, prom' ised to leave at hornet In lien of these facte there is but one way for Mr. Dolph to he elected' money against the will ot the people and since the people are to nnanimon in oppoeition to the senator their RiFtssutTATivis cannot cojsistently vote to return him. If they do it will take more than circumstantial evi dence to convince the people that they have not been betrejed lor pecuniary eonsideratHwa. ' IHtK AND K0W. When 8enster Dolpb left for Wash ington a few weeks ago to resume bis duties in the senate, he was under the impression that his re-election waa an assured fact, and that, therefore, bir presence would not be necesary in Oregon during neit January. Bnt the senator's opinion of the situation has changed, and the gentleman will be at home during the pending sena torial contest, and as a defense for hi deserting bis poet of duly to dabble in politics the Oregonian's hired man at Washington telegraphs the following to that paper: . It is not going to be a rare thing for the neit few we.-k to find thai several senator and some represents lives will be absent, looking after sen atorial elections. One or two instance have occurred where senators who felt confident of re-election remained in Washington, believing that the peo ple would take care of their interests, ouly to find that tbey bad in the eud been bra tan by some peculiar means which they might hare prevented had they been on ibe ground. . It ia no longer considered indelicate for a sen ator or representative seeking a sena torial election to visit the state capital during the contest, if contest there should be. The person vbo loudly shouts that a man should be at hi post attending to bis duties may be classed as the man who is opposed to the candidate anyway, and can find no good in him." Two years ago when the Waabing- ton legislators was having a deadlock in trying to elect Senator Allen's suc cessor, that gentleman came home o xk after bis chance., and at that time there was nothing too sarcnn tu tor the Oregonian to say editorially or locally about, a public servant who woulJ desert bis post of duiy to take part iu hi re-election. But since the great Dolpb has do;e the same thing it is no longer an "in delicate" act The fact of the matter ia Mr.' Dolpb con cedes bis weakness I y coming home, and at the same time betrays the tract reposed in bim by the people who have bestowed upon him more honor th in he ever deserved. We belikve his presence will, and it ought to, de feat bim. Tbb people who have elitims on the alleged railroad lands on Wilson liver had just as ' well not gu to uny further eziienre, as the rilnadi are sursi to win. The forfeiture bill ha. been reported adversely by 'Sena tor D 'lph and his committee, snd un less Senator Mitchell slid Congrow- nmn Hermann can offset this influence there is no bops for the settlers who have spent so mttch money and time on ti - claims. If tbs forfeiture bill could be passed It would relieve tbs settlers at once, but Dolpb is throwing cold water on that, yet the Dolpb organs a few weeks ago were urging his election, saying his Influence was necessary to get the forfeiture bill through. That argument is like their other argu ment. Tillamook Headlight (rep). What the Oregonian don't know about finaoce would make t) volume larger than its New Year number.
