Laet Oentary'e Servant Glrla. Our em nd mothers alirh for tha "rnnA old times," but the "servant question" seems to nave been a perplesinc one even a nunared years ago this month. The following advertisement waa in serted by an Irascible householder in I New York pa per of December 4, 1794: "I want to hire a servant girl, who lit once condescended to do house work she thall have a black woman to do the drndirery and a white srirl of fourteen to carry her ei presses to her lover. My coach shall be at her cell every afternoon at o o'clock twice in tha week she may attend the am phitheater, vulgarly called the circus. She ma v be more acceptable if she haa a taate for novelties, can dance well, aud knows tha secret character of Ind ies of high life in town. To such a tie generous wages will be given. N. B. Nona need apply that will not engage for ona month, aa the lad ies of the present day (who hire out) often break their oontraot, and slip off, to the great embarraiement of their -mployer. Apply at No. 67, Petticoat Lane.'1 THUS BAINIKH FAIR. Editors Mist: The Ladies' Aid Society of Rlnier, have bit uon a method which, if not new. is somewhat unique, In raising funds for charitable and church purposes. It consisted in what ia known ae a fair, there being useful and ornamental articles, made mostly by the untiring industry of the varioua members of the society, placed on ihibiliou for Rale. This fair was held in Masonic hall, the use of which waa generously donated by the frater nity, and in additiou to the very at tractive appearance of tha main hall, made so by the dft and ingenious lourbes of skillful ladies, was added a dining room in ona of the ante-rooms, where oystere in various forms, were eerved, together with other delicious vianda, to tempt the appetite and add coffers to the trersury. White the groee receipts far eioeeded the most sanguine eipectatione for these bard timee, aggregating 110500, yet the greatest and most gratifying success of the whole enterprise wss the necessary teal and unanimity with which the so ciety, and fur tbat matter, nearly the entire community, labored. The value of such an achievement cannot be measured in dollars and cents it is undving proof of the stability of our institutions and tha patriotism of our people. While wa are not disposed to make any especial claims for Rainier people, your correspondent prophesies that if they continue to hold together in tha future aa at present, it will not be long ere a chapel will grace the hill and become a counterpart to the noble school building which wa regard with unpardonable pride. It la impossible to make public acknowledgment of all the devotion and generous sacrifice be stowed by varioua individuals, bnt Messdames Clarke and Deilt are da serving of especial mention for vigor ous and persistent labor, and Mrs. Carlson, for tha contribution of clinic materiel. Amid the multitude of cares the organist was by no means forgot ten, and she can only make publio ac knowledgement, not alone of the pres ent received, but of the kind apprecia tion of her humble efforts to serve the publio. Theee gatherings aerva to ce ment in lastfag union the lies of neigh borly friendship better than any other method yet tried, and Is worthy of trial In any community. Sawctioii. FROM OVER THl STATE.
