Wha a fe weeki ifo President Cleveland referred to the action congress savoring of "perfidy and dishonor," he evidently felt the heavy hand of publioeeutiment banging over him. That statement has been proven by the people, and the very men who were responsible for the "perfidy and dishonor" to the country and to their constituents have been unmercifully slaughtered at the polls. The result of Tuesday' elections proves conclusively that, while there may have been other and very im portent interesia at stake, the tariff law was the main issue; and while the two greet let lies are tariff and in creased coinage of silve, the latter siuk into insignificance as compared with the former. The American people have exper ienced a dear lesson within the past two years from the fact that the very ground work of their existence is pro tected industries and a protected home market. Indeed the demooratio victory of two year ago wae immediately fal lowed by treachery to the people who were so misguided as to east their suf frage lor that party, never for one moment contemplating that thoee in whom they had plaoed confidence would even attempt so vicions a meas ure as the Wilson tariff bill, which has laid open every channel of onr com merce to invasion by foreign maou factum. Even If r. Wilson himself. who was driven to defeat by an ele ment, after once being turned loose did not estimate the enormous scope of the measure which bears his name and which is responsible for hie defeat.
