There has been more pleasure seek ers in Nehalem this year than at any time previous. You see we are getting our name up. Sidney Dell left for Portland last week where he will use his influence with the people in getting a railroad to our country. , Times aie pretty hard in Nehalem, but we manage to gel along without shaking lo death with the "ager" like you river folks do. That ia where the evil spirit was lsst heard from you know (Indian le gend.) We cannot vouch for the truth of this report, but it is barely possible that it may be true. We would wel come the governor on Bock creek. Business in Vernonia seem s to be very dull at preaeut, but we expect good times here at an early date, re gardleaa of the balance of the world. The railroad subsidy committee for the Tualitin route are rushing things, and it begin to look a though the Bock creek gold ' diggins" were go ing to turn out all right after all. The stale board of horticulture re ceived Tuesday, at Portland, from the stale board of California a consign ment of the Ion looked-for lady birds of the "twice stabbed" variety ,so oalled because they have two spots on them which look aa if they bad been stab bed with a pin or aomething of the sort. Thia ia the insect which devotes its attention lo exterminating the San Joae scale. The shipment waa con- Mined in a large pill bjx, which was as full of bug a a spoiled bam. The instruction accompanying the buts is to place them on treea Infested with San Jose scale, and to lie aome corn leave or other material on the branches tor them to hibernate in. The lady bird", or buss, or. moie properly. beetles, are to be distributed in colon ies of a doaen or more to person who tuve tree infested with San Joae scale. Mr. Prettyman, the well-known orcharding secured a colony yesterday, and the remainder will be disposed of a toon possible, as they must be hungry for scale and tired of being ooo ped np in a pill-box. The bugs are much like thoae so frequently found on rosebushes. This explanation is nesesaary, because some have been mislead by the name lady bird into supposing that tbe bugs were birds, and Secretary Sargent has received one application for a colony from a person who spoke of tbe boxes he had put up for tbe bird to build tbeir nests in. After these bugs are put on infested trees, there must be no more spraying or funiugatlng done, or it will kill them, as well aa the scale. TEEVEW SAYS UW INWOCENT. CUlaas so Know Akaelately Nothing ; of Sayrea Murder. An Oregonlan reporter waa yester day admitted to the room occupied by Attorney Sleeves in the woman' quar ter in tbe city Jail. Sleeve greeted the reporter cordially, aud quietly re turned hi cluir. He said lie was get ling along u well as could becxpected under the circumstances, and he had no complaint to niako against the Jail ors. When asked what he had to aay in reference to his case, he replied that there was nothing he could think of that had any bearing on the matter. 8teeve did not appear to evade in terrogation, aud was perfectly at ease. "I am a lawyer you know," he placidly said, "and thia is one of the result of a esse in court. Lawyers must an ticipate ruosl anything, but this is. be yond my comprehension, I absolutely know nothing of the Hay res murder, and believe that my innocence) will be proven. My great regreut is my incar ceration In fail will prove disastrous to several important cases I have in court. But I can't help it and mud be con tent." Tbe prisoner wa asked if he bad anything to say about Kelley'a state ment that the,' were implicated in tbe conspiracy to do away with Sayrea. He replied that he had known Kelley casually for a number of years. "I ab solutely never bad any conversation, or any communication whatever, with Kelley in this Sayre matter," he said, "and do not know a thing about it." Sleeves referred to a statement in the Evening Telegram, that hia ap pe trance when taken into court yester day indicated that he had passed a resiless night. Turning to Detective Day, who stays in the room with him as guard, he said : "Didn't I sleep well last night, J off I believe we both went to bed at 11 o'clock, and I am aura I slept till 9 o'clock in the morn ing. The beds are not quite as soft a I am used to, but ihey are not bad." Steeves said he had left hia case in the hands of hia attorneys, Dolph, Mallory k, Simon, and that be de pended entirely upon them to look af ter bis interest. , Bob Garihorn wa also seen in hi room iu the woman's department. He appeared cheerful, and said that his only regret in the matter waa the notoriety he haa received as a supposed murderer. He said he had never had any con venation with Kelley in regard to the Sayre conspiracy, and that he could not make out how be had been drawn into it, in anyway. - Garthoru appears to have been very much concerned about his fate. Now that be kuows his innocence appears to be estahliehed.ie is very happy. msa Baby was ssek, we gave bar Csstorla. When she waa a Child, aba cried for Csatorla.
